A security network for use in a building with an opening to be monitored for possible intrusion. The network includes an intrusion sensor monitoring the opening; an RFID transponder associated with the sensor; an RFID reader in wireless communication with the transponder; and a portable telephone handset having first keys activating conventional telephone capability and second keys activating interaction with the other security network components. The handset wirelessly communicates with the reader. The reader may take the form of a security cradle for the handset. Alternatively, the reader may take the form of a telephone console. The console has keys enabling a user to dial remote telephone numbers; circuitry adapted to receive wireless communications from the transponder; circuitry in wireless communication with the handset; circuitry in communication with an external network; and a processor executing program code enabling the handset to communicate with the external network via the telephone console.

What is claimed: 1. A security network for use in a building with an opening to be monitored for possible intrusion comprising: an intrusion sensor monitoring the opening; a first RFID transponder associated with the sensor; a first RFID reader in wireless communication with the first RFID transponder; and a portable telephone handset having a first set of keys activating conventional telephone capability through the first RFID reader and a second set of keys activating interaction with at least one of the sensor, the first RFID transponder, and the first RFID reader of the security network, the portable telephone handset in wireless communication with the first RFID reader. 2. The security network of claim 1 wherein the handset has a power supply and the first RFID reader further comprises a charging cradle into which the handset can be placed for replenishing the power supply. 3. The security network of claim 1 wherein the first RFID transponder sends a wireless communication to the first RFID reader only in response to a wireless communication from the first RFID reader. 4. The security network of claim 1 wherein the first RFID reader provides a gateway with an interface to a network external to the security network wherein the gateway can selectively transmit messages through the network external to the security network. 5. The security network of claim 1 wherein the first RFID transponder communicates a present state of the sensor to the first RFID reader and the first RFID reader includes a control function that receives the communication from the first RFID transponder and is configured either to send an alert message to an emergency response agency or to generate an alert on the handset. 6. The security network of claim 5 wherein the first RFID transponder communicates with the first RFID reader only after the first RFID transponder has been enrolled with the control function of the first RFID reader. 7. The security network of claim 6 wherein the first RFID reader has a table for storing enrollment information. 8. The security network of claim 1 wherein the communications between the first RFID reader and at least one of the first RFID transponder and the handset are encrypted. 9. The security network of claim 1 wherein the first RFID transponder interprets a wireless communication received from the first RFID reader to determine whether a response is permitted, determines whether it has a response to send to the first RFID reader, and only sends a wireless communication to the first RFID reader (a) in response to a communication from the first RFID reader, (b) if a response is permitted, and (c) if the first RFID transponder has a response to send. 10. The security network of claim 1 wherein the handset has a power supply, a processor, memory for storing program code, and at least one antenna for use in wireless communications to and from the first RFID reader. 11. The security network of claim 1 wherein the handset has a weight concentrated in the middle of the handset, where the user holds the handset, so that the weight of the handset is advantageously distributed. 12. The security network of claim 1 wherein the dimensions of the handset are predetermined so that even a user having a relatively small hand can wrap his or her hand around the handset. 13. The security network of claim 1 wherein the keys of the first set of keys have a first texture while the keys of the second set of keys have a second texture permitting the user to easily and quickly distinguish the different sets of keys. 14. The security network of claim 1 wherein the keys of the first set of keys have a first shape while the keys of the second set of keys have a second shape permitting the user to easily and quickly distinguish the different sets of keys. 15. The security network of claim 1 wherein the various keys have different sizes which convey information to the user. 16. The security network of claim 15 wherein one key is larger than every other key. 17. The security network of claim 1 wherein the various keys have different colors which convey information to the user. 18. The security network of claim 1 wherein the keys of the first set of keys have a first color while the keys of the second set of keys have a second color permitting the user to easily and quickly distinguish the different sets of keys. 19. The security network of claim 1 wherein the handset has a body and a cover that slides relative to the body between a covered position protecting one or more keys against inadvertent activation and an uncovered position exposing the one or more keys and allowing the user to activate the one or more keys. 20. The security network of claim 1 wherein the handset has a body and one or more keys are recessed to a predetermined height relative to the body to avoid contact when a user places the handset on a surface. 21. The security network of claim 1 wherein the handset has a body with a slight concave curvature and has a sliding cover and the keys protrude slightly from the body, the body curvature in combination with the cover protecting the keys from inadvertent activation when a user places the handset on a surface. 22. A security network for use in a building with an opening to be monitored for possible intrusion comprising: an intrusion sensor monitoring the opening; a first RFID transponder associated with the sensor; a portable telephone handset having a first set of keys activating conventional telephone capability and a second set of keys activating interaction with components of the security network; and a security cradle including a charging cradle for the portable telephone handset and constituting an RFID reader in wireless communication with the first RFID transponder and providing a gateway with an interface to a network external to the security network wherein the gateway can selectively transmit messages through the network external to the security network, the first set of keys of the portable telephone handset activating conventional telephone capability through the RFID reader and the second set of keys of the portable telephone handset activating interaction with at least one of the sensor, the first RFID transponder, and the RFID reader of the security network, and wherein the first RFID transponder communicates a present state of the sensor to the security cradle and the security cradle includes a control function that receives the communication from the first RFID transponder and is configured to send an alert message to an emergency response agency. 23. A security network for use in a building with an opening to be monitored for possible intrusion comprising: an intrusion sensor monitoring the opening; a first RFID transponder associated with the sensor; a portable telephone handset including a first set of keys having a first texture and activating conventional telephone capability and a second set of keys having a second texture and activating interaction with components of the security network, the different textures permitting the user to easily and quickly distinguish the different sets of keys, some of the keys having different sizes or colors which convey information to the user; and a security cradle including a charging cradle for the portable telephone handset and constituting an RFID reader in wireless communication with the first RFID transponder, the first set of keys of the portable telephone handset activating conventional telephone capability through the RFID reader and the second set of keys of the portable telephone handset activating interaction with at least one of the sensor, the first RFID transponder, and the RFID reader of the security network. 24. A security cradle for use in a security network monitoring an opening in a building for possible intrusion comprising: charging strips, wires, or points that provide power to at least one portable telephone handset placed in contact with the charging strips, wires, or points; first communications circuitry adapted to receive wireless communications from at least one RFID transponder; second communications circuitry in wireless communication with the at least one portable telephone handset; third communications circuitry in communication with a network external to the security network; and a processor executing program code that enables the at least one portable telephone handset to communicate with the network external to the security network via the security cradle. 25. The security cradle of claim 24 wherein the third communications circuitry supports a connection to a PSTN. 26. The security cradle of claim 24 wherein the third communications circuitry supports a connection to an Ethernet network. 27. The security cradle of claim 24 wherein the third communications circuitry supports connections to both a PSTN and an Ethernet network. 28. The security cradle of claim 27 wherein the processor further includes program code enabling the third communications circuitry to select either a connection to a PSTN or a connection to an Ethernet network when the at least one portable telephone handset is communicating with the external network. 29. The security cradle of claim 24 wherein the at least one RFID transponder communicates a present status information to the security cradle and the security cradle includes a control function that receives the communication from the at least one RFID transponder and is configured to send an alert message to an emergency response agency. 30. The security cradle of claim 29 wherein the control function of the security cradle is configured to send the alert message via a PSTN. 31. The security cradle of claim 29 wherein the control function of the security cradle is configured to send the alert message via an Ethernet network. 32. The security cradle of claim 24 wherein the at least one RFID transponder communicates a present status information to the security cradle and the security cradle includes a control function that receives the communication from the at least one RFID transponder and is configured to send an alert message to the at least one portable telephone handset. 33. The security cradle of claim 24 wherein the second communications circuitry is configured to send wireless communications to the at least one RFID transponder. 34. A telephone console for use in a security network monitoring an opening in a building for possible intrusion comprising: a first set of keys that enable a user to enter numeric codes into the telephone console for dialing remote telephone numbers; a second set of keys activating interaction with components of the security network; first communications circuitry adapted to receive wireless communications from at least one RFID transponder; second communications circuitry in wireless communication with at least one portable telephone handset; third communications circuitry in communication with a network external to the security network; and a processor executing program code that enables the at least one portable telephone handset to communicate with the network external to the security network via the telephone console. 35. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the third communications circuitry supports a connection to a PSTN. 36. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the third communications circuitry supports a connection to an Ethernet network. 37. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the third communications circuitry supports connections to both a PSTN and an Ethernet network. 38. The telephone console of claim 37 wherein the processor further includes program code to enable the third communications circuitry to select either a connection to a PSTN or a connection to an Ethernet network when the at least one portable telephone handset is communicating with the external network. 39. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the at least one RFID transponder communicates a present status information to the telephone console and the telephone console includes a control function that receives the communication from the at least one RFID transponder and is configured to send an alert message to an emergency response agency. 40. The telephone console of claim 39 wherein the control function of the telephone console is configured to send the alert message via a PSTN. 41. The telephone console of claim 39 wherein the control function of the telephone console is configured to send the alert message via an Ethernet network. 42. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the at least one RFID transponder communicates a present status information to the telephone console and the telephone console includes a control function that receives the communication from the at least one RFID transponder and is configured to send an alert message to the at least one portable telephone handset. 43. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the second communications circuitry is configured to send wireless communications to the at least one RFID transponder. 44. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the keys of the first set of keys have a first texture while the keys of the second set of keys have a second texture permitting the user to easily and quickly distinguish the different sets of keys. 45. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the keys of the first set of keys have a first shape while the keys of the second set of keys have a second shape permitting the user to easily and quickly distinguish the different sets of keys. 46. The telephone console of claim 34 wherein the various keys have different sizes which convey information to the user. 47. The telephone console of claim 46 wherein one key is larger than every other key. 48.
