A water cooled valve is provided in the form of a check valve, an air purge valve, a distributor valve, a combination air purge and distributor valve and the like for use in the liquid fuel system of a gas turbine. A movable valve member controls the flow of fluid through the valve's fuel circuit. A separate cooling circuit circulates cooling water through the valve near or alongside the valve member. The water is of a lower temperature than the high temperature liquid fuel, and thereby carries away heat transferred to the valve by the fuel. In one form, the cooling circuit is formed in part by a helical groove in the periphery the valve body housing the valve member. A sealed water jacket surrounds the valve body and has dedicated supply and return ports for coupling the valve to a water supply via water lines. The water ports are positioned tangentially to induce swirling flow inside the valve.

What is claimed is: 1. A valve, comprising: an annular jacket sleeve having at least one open end and defining coolant supply and return ports; a valve body disposed within the jacket sleeve and defining a flow passage and a valve chamber in which is disposed a valve member extending along a valve

What is claimed is: 1. A valve, comprising: an annular jacket sleeve having at least one open end and defining coolant supply and return ports; a valve body disposed within the jacket sleeve and defining a flow passage and a valve chamber in which is disposed a valve member extending along a valve axis and operable to control flow of media through the flow passage; and a coolant passage in communication with the coolant supply and return ports and isolated from the flow passage, the coolant passage being formed by a helical groove at a peripheral surface of one of the jacket sleeve and the valve body, the valve body and the jacket sleeve otherwise engaging one another along the coolant passage such that coolant swirls within the coolant passage in a helical path about the valve axis to receive and carry away heat from within the valve body. 2. The valve of claim 1, wherein the supply and return ports are disposed tangentially with respect to the valve chamber at opposite sides of the valve axis to induce swirling in the coolant passage. 3. The valve of claim 1, wherein the peripheral surface of the valve body defines the helical groove. 4. The valve of claim 3, wherein the peripheral surface of the valve body forms a single-start ACME thread pattern. 5. The valve of claim 1, wherein the valve is a check valve in which the valve member is biased to the closed position. 6. The valve of claim 1, wherein the valve body is a unitary body extending from an interface between the flow passage and the valve body to an interface between the valve body and the coolant passage. 7. A liquid cooled fuel valve, comprising: a valve body defining a valve chamber having a movable valve member extending along a valve axis for controlling liquid fuel flow between fuel inlet and outlet ports; a jacket sleeve having opposite open ends disposed about the valve body and having supply and return ports; a helical coolant circuit defined between the jacket sleeve and the valve body in communication with the supply and return ports, wherein the valve body has a peripheral surface defining a helical groove spiraling about the valve axis in communication with the supply and return ports, the peripheral surface of the valve body also defining a helical surface between the helical groove engaging an inner peripheral surface of the jacket sleeve such that coolant swirls within the coolant circuit in a helical path about the valve axis; and seals spaced apart along the valve axis at opposite ends of the coolant circuit and seating against the jacket sleeve and the valve body to seal the coolant circuit from the open ends of the jacket sleeve. 8. The valve of claim 7, wherein the supply and return ports are disposed tangentially with respect to the valve chamber at opposite sides of the valve axis to induce swirling in the coolant circuit. 9. The valve of claim 7, wherein the seals create a sliding seal during relative movement of the jacket sleeve and the valve body. 10. The valve of claim 7, wherein the valve body is a unitary body extending from an interface between the flow passage and the valve body to an interface between the valve body and the coolant passage. 11. A check valve, comprising: an open-ended jacket sleeve having supply and return ports; a valve body disposed within the jacket sleeve and having a spring biased valve member extending along a valve axis and biased to close off communication between a fuel inlet port and fuel outlet port and opened by fuel pressure, the valve body having an outer peripheral surface defining an annular helical groove forming a coolant circuit in communication with the supply and return ports and a helical surface between the helical groove engaging an inner peripheral surface of the jacket sleeve such that coolant swirls within the coolant circuit in a helical path about the valve axis; and seals spaced apart along the valve axis at opposite ends of the coolant circuit and seating against the inner peripheral surface of the jacket sleeve and the outer peripheral surface of the valve body to seal the coolant circuit from open ends of the jacket sleeve. 12. The valve of claim 11, wherein the supply and return ports are disposed tangentially with respect to the valve chamber at opposite sides of the valve axis to induce swirling in the coolant circuit. 13. The valve of claim 11, wherein the valve body is a unitary body extending from an interface between the valve body and a flow passage defined by the valve body to an interface between the valve body and the coolant passage.
