A vibration reduction apparatus for use with a hammer tool having a hammer piston is disclosed. The hammer piston is caused to reciprocate in the cylinder by rotation of a gear wheel and crank drive. A cam is mounted around the gear wheel, a counterweight surrounds the piston cylinder, and a cam follower is provided on the counterweight. The cam follower on the counterweight is urged into contact with the cam by a biasing element. The external profile of the cam is such that rotation of the gear wheel causes oscillation of the counterweight in antiphase to motion of the hammer piston to counteract vibrations produced by operation of the hammer action of the tool. A mechanism is provided to deactivate the vibration reduction apparatus when the hammer action of the tool is deactivated.

The invention claimed is: 1. A power tool comprising: a housing; a cylinder mounted for slideable movement in the housing; a piston mounted in and encased on all sides by the cylinder; a motor in the housing adapted to cause a reciprocating motion of the piston in the cylinder; vibration reduction means in the housing for driving the cylinder in a reciprocating manner that at least partially cancels vibration of the housing caused by movement of the piston; and deactivation means for deactivating the vibration reduction means. 2. The power tool of claim 1 wherein the cylinder is driven in antiphase with the piston. 3. The power tool of claim 1 wherein the piston is driven by a drive mechanism connected to the motor and the vibration reduction means comprises a cam rotatably coupled to the drive mechanism and operable to drive the cylinder. 4. The power tool of claim 3 wherein vibration reduction means comprises a pin protruding from an exterior of the cylinder and adapted for engagement with the cam. 5. The power tool of claim 3 further comprises a biasing member that urges the cylinder into engagement with the cam. 6. The power tool of claim 5 wherein the cylinder engages with the cam when the tool engages a workpiece and the cylinder disengages the cam when the tool disengages the workpiece. 7. The power tool of claim 3 wherein the vibration reduction means comprises a cam follower having a first aperture at one end that surrounds the cam and a second aperture opposite the first aperture that engages a pin protruding from the cylinder. 8. The power tool of claim 7 wherein the pin protrudes from an exterior surface of the cylinder. 9. The power tool of claim 7 wherein the pin is arranged inside the cylinder. 10. The power tool of claim 1 further comprises a ram mounted in the cylinder, where the reciprocating motion of the piston causes the ram to be driven along the cylinder to impart a hammer action to a beat piece. 11. A power hammer comprising: a housing; a cylinder mounted in the housing; a piston mounted in the cylinder; and a motor in the housing adapted to cause a reciprocating motion of the piston in the cylinder, wherein the piston is driven by a crank drivable by the motor and the cylinder is driven in a reciprocating manner with the piston by a cam rotatably coupled to the crank and a biasing member that urges the cylinder into engagement with the cam when the tool engages a workpiece and the cylinder disengages the cam when the tool disengages the workpiece, thereby counteracting vibration of the housing caused by movement of the piston. 12. The power hammer of claim 11 wherein the cylinder is mounted for slideable movement relative to the housing. 13. The power hammer of claim 11 wherein the cam engages a pin protruding from an exterior of the cylinder. 14. The power hammer of claim 11 further comprises a cam follower having a first aperture at one end that surrounds the cam and a second aperture opposite the first aperture that engages a pin protruding from the cylinder. 15. The power hammer of claim 14 wherein the pin protrudes from an exterior surface of the cylinder. 16. The power hammer of claim 14 wherein the pin is arranged inside the cylinder. 17. The power hammer of claim 11 further comprises a ram mounted in the cylinder, where the reciprocating motion of the piston causes the ram to be driven along the cylinder to impart a hammer action to a beat piece. 18. A vibration reduction apparatus for a power hammer having a piston mounted in a cylinder and a drive mechanism adapted to cause a reciprocating motion of the piston in the cylinder, comprising: a cam rotatably coupled to the drive mechanism and the cylinder mounted for slideable movement relative to the housing, wherein the cylinder is driven in a reciprocating manner by the cam and the cylinder is urged into engagement with the cam by a biasing member, thereby counteracting vibration of the housing caused by movement of the piston; and a deactivating mechanism that disengages the cylinder from the cam when the power hammer is disengaged from a workpiece. 19. The reduction apparatus of claim 18 further comprises a driving gear drivable by the motor to cause reciprocating motion of the piston, wherein the deactivating mechanism selectively couples the driving gear to the cam.
