A method of processing waste comprising carrying out the following steps, in recited order, at room temperature and at ambient pressure: providing a waste processing system, the waste processing system comprising: a loading chamber having a loading chamber door that transitions between an open state that permits a user to place waste in the loading chamber and an airtight closed state that seals waste within the system, the loading chamber also having a trap door that transitions between a closed state that provides a surface in the loading chamber on which to place waste and an open state that permits the waste to leave the loading chamber for processing within the system; a cutting system that receives waste from the loading chamber and comprises cutters sized, shaped, and positioned to cut waste into pieces having cross sections no larger than one square inch; and air inlet positioned in the loading chamber or cutting system to permit an air flow through the waste processing system; a trough that receives waste pieces from the cutting system and comprises one or more disinfectant inlets located in a side wall of the trough; a source of disinfectant that is in fluid communication with the one or more disinfectant inlets to spray disinfectant onto waste pieces in the trough; a wetting tunnel that receives disinfectant-sprayed waste pieces from the trough; a separator that receives waste from the wetting tunnel and separates particulate waste matter from bulk waste matter; a filter system that receives and traps particulate waste matter from the separator; a receiving bin that receives and stores bulk waste matter from the separator; and a circulation system that applies sufficient vacuum through the filter system, the wetting tunnel, the trough, the cutting system, and the loading chamber to suck waste therethrough; sealing infected waste inside the waste processing system, wherein sealing comprises: placing infected waste in the loading chamber; closing the loading chamber door, thereby sealing the infected waste inside the waste processing system; and opening the trap door, thereby allowing the infected waste to leave the loading chamber and contact the cutting system; cutting the infected waste by operating the cutting system on the waste to cut the waste into pieces having cross sections no larger than one inch by one inch square, thereby exposing surfaces of the waste, the pieces then advancing to the trough; agitating the waste pieces by actuating the circulation system and applying sufficient vacuum through the filter system, the wetting tunnel, the trough, and the cutting system to suck waste therethrough, the vacuum creating a wind inside the system that sweeps up the waste pieces, suspends them in air, and keeps them separate from one another; and spraying the waste pieces with a disinfectant while the waste pieces are agitated in the trough, thereby exposing substantially all surfaces of the waste to the disinfectant spray and thereby coating the waste pieces with disinfectant, wherein the disinfectant kills pathogens on contact and disinfects the waste pieces. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising sucking the waste pieces through the trough, through the wetting tunnel, and into the separator. 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising separating material received by the separator into disinfected particulate waste matter and disinfected bulk waste matter. 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising advancing bulk waste matter into the receiving bin. 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising trapping particulate waste matter in the filter system. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the circulation system applies the vacuum to the loading chamber. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the disinfectant comprises an alkaline solution. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the alkaline solution is prepared using kiln dust. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the alkaline solution has a pH of 12 or greater. 10. The method of claim 7, wherein the alkaline solution comprises a 10% aqueous solution of calcium oxide. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the disinfectant is provided in dry powder form and mixed with water to form an aqueous solution shortly before being sprayed onto the waste pieces. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the wetting tunnel comprises one or more disinfectant inlets to spray disinfectant onto waste pieces in the wetting tunnel, and the method further comprises spraying the waste pieces with a disinfectant while the waste pieces are agitated in the wetting tunnel. 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising separating particulate waste matter from bulk waste matter in the separator. 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising trapping the particulate waste matter in the filter system. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the loading chamber door and the trap door are interlocked so that only one of them may be in its open state at a given time.
