A tag receives a wireless signpost signal that contains a signpost code, converts the signpost code into location information representative of a physical location of a signpost that transmitted the received signpost signal, and transmits a wireless tag signal that includes the location information. In a different configuration, a tag receives a wireless signpost signal that includes a signpost code, and determines whether the signpost that generated the received signpost signal is a replacement for a different signpost. If it is a replacement, the tag transmits a wireless tag signal containing an information portion that relates to the signpost replaced by the signpost that generated the received signpost signal.

An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said transmitter section responds to receipt by said receiver section of a signpost signal containing a signpost code that is not in the list by excluding information relating to that signpost from said tag signals. 9. An apparatus according to claim 1, further including: a signpost configured to transmit wireless signpost signals that each include a signpost code; and a reader configured to receive the wireless tag signals transmitted by said tag. 10. A method comprising: receiving in a receiver section of a tag wireless signpost signals that each include a signpost code; responding to receipt by said receiver section of a signpost signal by causing a further section of said tag to convert the signpost code from the received signpost signal into location information representative of a physical location of a signpost that transmitted the received signpost signal; and transmitting from a transmitter section of said tag wireless tag signals that each include a tag code associated with said tag, said transmitting including causing said transmitter section to be responsive to conversion of a received signpost code into location information by said further section for including the location information in at least one said tag signal. 11. A method according to claim 10, including: configuring said wireless signpost signals to be near field signals of primarily magnetic character; and configuring said receiver section to receive said signpost signals of magnetic character. 12. A method according to claim 10, including causing said transmitter section to be further responsive to conversion of a received signpost code into location information by said further section for including the signpost code in at least one said tag signal with the corresponding location information. 13. A method according to claim 10, including configuring said location information to include at least two portions that respectively represent different items of information about the location of the signpost. 14. A method according to claim 10, including: storing a list of signpost codes within said further section of said tag; and storing in said further section respective said location information for each said signpost code in said list. 15. A method according to claim 14, including: storing in said further section for each said signpost code a respective indication of whether a signpost corresponding to that signpost code is currently active; and causing said transmitter section to exclude from said tag signals information relating to signposts that are indicated to be inactive. 16. A method according to claim 14, including causing said transmitter section to respond to receipt by said receiver section of a signpost signal containing a signpost code that is not in the list by excluding information relating to that signpost from said tag signals. 17. An apparatus comprising a tag having circuitry that includes: a receiver section configured to receive wireless signpost signals that each include a signpost code; a further section responsive to receipt of a signpost signal by said receiver section for determining whether the signpost that generated the received signpost signal is a replacement for a different signpost; and a transmitter section operable to transmit wireless tag signals that each include a tag code associated with said tag, said transmitter section being responsive to a determination by said further section that the received signpost signal is from a replacement signpost by including in at least one said tag signal an information portion that relates to the signpost replaced by the signpost that generated the received signpost signal. 18. An apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said wireless signpost signals are near field signals of primarily magnetic character, said receiver section being configured to receive said signpost signals of magnetic character. 19. An apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said information portion is the signpost code for the signpost replaced by the signpost that generated the received signpost signal. 20. An apparatus according to claim 17, wherein if the signpost that generated the received signpost signal is not a replacement for a different signpost, said transmitter section includes in at least one said tag signal an information portion that relates to the signpost that generated the received signpost signal. 21. An apparatus according to claim 20, wherein when the signpost that generated the received signpost signal is not a replacement for a different signpost, said information portion is the signpost code from the received signpost signal. 22. An apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said further section of said tag includes a memory storing a list of signpost codes, and storing an identification of whether each of the signpost codes in the list represents a signpost that has replaced a different signpost. 23. An apparatus according to claim 22, wherein said list is configured as a table. 24. An apparatus according to claim 22, wherein said transmitter section responds to receipt by said receiver section of a signpost signal containing a signpost code that is not in said list by excluding information relating to that signpost from said tag signals. 25. An apparatus according to claim 22, wherein said list includes for each of the signpost codes therein a respective indication of whether a signpost corresponding to that signpost code is currently active; and wherein said transmitter section excludes from said tag signals information relating to signposts that are indicated to be inactive. 26.
