A portable device having scanning, imaging or other data-capture capability is described. In some cases, the portable device can indicate to the user when enough information has been captured to uniquely identify a source document. In some cases, the portable device calculates timestamps and location-stamps indicating when and where a data capture occurred. In some cases, the portable device is controlled by gestures. In some cases, the portable scanning device has associated billing and content/service subscription information.

We claim: 1. A mobile phone, comprising: control logic; a memory, coupled to the control logic, that stores data and instructions executable by the control logic; and an optical data capture element that captures data from an unidentified printed document; wherein the instructions include: instructions that cause the data capture element to capture an arbitrary human-readable text sequence from the unidentified printed document, the arbitrary human-readable text sequence representing less than a whole page in the body of the unidentified printed document; instructions that cause the mobile phone to derive from the arbitrary captured text sequence a document signature that identifies i) the printed document and ii) a location within the body of the printed document; and instructions that cause the mobile phone to indicate that an action layer associated with the printed document was identified in accordance with the document signature, the action layer indicating a plurality of actions specific to the identified location within the body of the printed document. 2. A computer-implemented method for processing a text capture operation, comprising: receiving an indication that a user of a mobile phone has performed a text capture operation via said mobile phone on an unidentified printed document the text capture operation capturing an arbitrary text sequence, wherein said arbitrary text sequence represents less than a whole page of human-readable text from the body of the printed document; determining that the received indication comprises sufficient information to derive a document signature that identifies i) the printed document and ii) a location within the body of the printed document; and determining that the document signature comprises sufficient information to identify an action layer associated with the printed document, the action layer indicating a plurality of actions specific to the identified location within the body of the printed document. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the rendered document contains at least one line of text, and wherein the captured text sequence is a proper subset of the text contained in a single line of the rendered document. 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the rendered document contains at least one page of text, and wherein the captured text sequence is a proper subset of the text contained in a single page of the rendered document. 5. The method of claim 2 wherein the captured text sequence is comprised of words, and wherein the text capture operation involves specific user interactions with each of the words of the captured text sequence. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the user speaks each of the words of the captured text sequence. 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the user directs an optical sensor at each of the words of the captured text sequence. 8. The method of claim 2 wherein the captured text sequence is comprised of ordered words, and wherein the text capture operation involves capturing physical phenomena corresponding to each of the words of the captured text sequence in the order of the captured text sequence. 9. The method of claim 2 wherein the captured text sequence is comprised of ordered words, and wherein the text capture operation involves capturing physical phenomena corresponding to each of the words of the captured text sequence in the reverse order of the captured text sequence. 10. The method of claim 2 wherein the text capture operation comprises manually moving an optical sensor across the rendered document. 11. The method of claim 2 wherein the text capture operation comprises capturing image data from a non-rectangular region of the rendered document. 12. The method of claim 2 wherein the text sequence captured by the text capture operation comprises fewer than ten words. 13. The method of claim 2 wherein the text capture operation comprises capturing an image of fewer than ten words. 14. The method of claim 2, further comprising identifying a position in the related document at which the text sequence occurs.
