A method for an engine configured to deliver an actively varying relative ratio of a first and second fuel via a delivery system having a first and second injector for a cylinder of the engine, where the first fuel has a lesser relative amount of alcohol, the method comprising of varying an amount of injection from the first and second injector with operating conditions, when said variation causes said first injector to approach a first minimum opening condition, increasing injection of said second injector and disabling said first injector, and when said variation causes said second injector to approach a second minimum opening condition, avoiding further reduction of said second injector and decreasing injection of said first injector.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for an engine configured to deliver an actively varying relative ratio of a first and second fuel via a delivery system having a first and second injector for a cylinder of the engine, the first fuel delivered by the first injector and the second fuel delivered
The invention claimed is: 1. A method for an engine configured to deliver an actively varying relative ratio of a first and second fuel via a delivery system having a first and second injector for a cylinder of the engine, the first fuel delivered by the first injector and the second fuel delivered by the second injector, where the first fuel has a lesser relative amount of alcohol than the second fuel, the method comprising: varying an amount of injection from the first and second injector with operating conditions; and when said variation causes said first injector to approach a first minimum opening condition, increasing injection of said second injector and disabling said first injector, and when said variation causes said second injector to approach a second minimum opening condition, avoiding further reduction of injection of said second injector and decreasing injection of said first injector. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said first fuel injection includes gasoline and said second fuel includes ethanol. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said varying is performed in response to knock sensor feedback. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said varying is performed in response to oxygen sensor feedback. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said varying is performed in response to engine speed or load changes. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said second injector is a direct injector. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising boosting intake air entering the engine. 8. A system for an engine, comprising: a fuel delivery system configured to provide a varying relative ratio of a first and second fuel in response to a control signal, said provision via a delivery system having a first and second injector for a cylinder of the engine, where the first fuel has a lesser relative amount of alcohol than the second fuel, the first fuel delivered by the first injector and the second fuel delivered by the second injector; and a controller for varying an amount of injection from the first and second injector with operating conditions, and when said variation causes said first injector to approach a first minimum opening condition, increasing injection of said second injector and disabling said first injector. 9. The system of claim 8 wherein said first fuel includes gasoline and said second fuel includes ethanol. 10. The system of claim 8 wherein said varying is performed in response to knock sensor feedback. 11. The system of claim 8 wherein said varying is performed in response to engine speed or load changes. 12. The system of claim 8 wherein said second injector is a direct injector and the system further comprising further comprising a boosting device. 13. A system for an engine, comprising: a fuel delivery system configured to provide a varying relative ratio of a first and second fuel in response to a control signal, said provision via a delivery system having a first and second injector for a cylinder of the engine, where the first fuel has a lesser relative amount of alcohol than the second fuel, the first fuel delivered by the first injector and the second fuel delivered by the second injector; and a controller for varying an amount of injection from the first and second injector with operating conditions, and when said variation causes said second injector to approach a second minimum opening condition, avoiding further reduction of said second injector and decreasing injection of said first injector. 14. The system of claim 13 wherein said first fuel includes gasoline and said second fuel includes ethanol. 15. The system of claim 13 wherein said varying is performed in response to knock sensor feedback. 16. The system of claim 13 wherein said varying is performed in response to engine speed or load changes. 17. The system of claim 13 wherein said second injector is a direct injector and the system further comprising further comprising a boosting device. 18. A system for an engine, comprising: a fuel delivery system having a first and a second fuel injector, each for a common cylinder of the engine; and a controller for varying an amount of injection from the first and second injector with operating conditions, and when said variation causes one of said first and second injectors to approach a first minimum opening condition, disabling said one of said first and second injectors and increasing injection of an other of said first and second injectors, and when said variation causes the other of said first and second injectors to approach a second minimum opening condition, avoiding further reduction of said other of said first and second injectors and decreasing injection of said one of said first and second injectors. 19. The system of claim 18 wherein both injectors deliver gasoline. 20. The system of claim 19 where said first injector is a direct cylinder injector and said second injector is a port injector.
