Methods are presented which improve the performance of semi and fully automatic paintball guns include sensing paintball and gun bolt position during loading to coordinate and pace the gun for maximum automatic feed rate and minimal chopping. In addition, methods are presented for indicating a need for servicing through an alarm when the magazine nears empty based upon various conditions such as sensed magazine feed rate fall-off. Additional apparatus are discussed for carrying out the methods, and for performance of other tasks such as selection of pre-wind in spring-type forced-feed loaders.

I claim: 1. A method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun, comprising the steps of: measuring a rate of ingress with respect to time of paint balls into a breech in said paint ball gun; monitoring for an electrical activation associated with initiating forward bolt motion; measuring a forward motion time interval primarily comprised by the time required to begin to move said bolt forward from said electrical activation; and triggering said bolt through an electrical activation prior to a paint ball being in a ready-to-fire position in said breech, responsive to said bolt forward motion time interval. 2. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 1, further comprising the step of discerning a position of a ball relative to said firing position. 3. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 2, wherein said step of discerning a position of a ball relative to said firing position further comprises the step of detecting ball presence in at least two different locations from said firing position. 4. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 3, wherein said step of detecting ball presence in at least two different locations from said firing position further comprises the step of sensing a characteristic of an optical beam. 5. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 3, further comprising the steps of: calculating an interval of time between a ball being detected in said detecting ball presence step at a first one of said locations and being detected in said detecting ball presence step at a second one of said locations; and advancing said triggering of said bolt based upon detecting a firing ball in said detecting ball presence step at said first one of said locations by an amount which causes said bolt to move immediately when said firing ball is detected in said detecting ball presence step at said second one of said locations. 6. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 1, further comprising the step of discerning an instantaneous bolt position. 7. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 1, further comprising the steps of: storing comparative ingress of paint ball data; and triggering said bolt responsive to said stored ingress of paint ball data. 8. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 2, further comprising the steps of: storing comparative ingress of paint ball data; and triggering said bolt responsive to said stored ingress of paint ball data. 9. The method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun of claim 1, wherein said step of measuring a rate of ingress further comprises the steps of: detecting a retreat of said bolt; sensing passage of a paint ball partially but not entirely into said breech; and calculating said rate of ingress from said detecting and sensing steps; and further comprising the step of: advancing said triggering of said bolt based upon said calculating step by an amount which causes said bolt to move immediately when said paint ball reaches a ready to fire position within said breech. 10. A method of anticipatory operation of a bolt in an electro-pneumatic paint ball gun to improve a firing rate of said gun, comprising the steps of: discerning a position of a ball relative to a firing position by detecting ball presence in at least two different locations from said firing position; calculating an interval of time between a ball being detected in said detecting ball presence step at a first one of said locations and being detected in said detecting ball presence step at a second one of said locations; measuring a rate of ingress of paint balls into a breech in said paint ball gun; monitoring for an electrical activation associated with initiating bolt motion; measuring a time interval required to move said bolt from said electrical activation; triggering said bolt through an electrical activation prior to a paint ball being in said firing position in said breech responsive to said bolt movement time interval, by advancing said triggering of said bolt based upon detecting a firing ball in said detecting ball presence step at said first one of said locations by an amount which causes said bolt to move immediately when said firing ball is detected in said detecting ball presence step at said second one of said locations.
