An extracardiac pumping for supplementing the circulation of blood, including the cardiac output, in a patient without any component thereof being connected to the patient's heart, and methods of using same. One embodiment provides a vascular graft that has a first end that is sized and configured to couple to a non-primary blood vessel and a second end that is fluidly coupled to a pump to conduct blood between the pump and the non-primary blood vessel. An outflow conduit is also provided that has a first end sized and configured to be positioned within the same or different blood vessel, whether primary or non-primary, through the vascular graft. The outflow conduit is fluidly coupled to the pump to conduct blood between the pump and the patient. The vascular graft may be connected to the blood vessel subcutaneously to permit application of the extracardiac pumping system in a minimally-invasive procedure.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of treating a patient by supplementing the circulation of blood through the patient's vasculature, the method comprising: providing a pump having an inflow conduit and an outflow conduit; providing fluid communication between a distal end of the inflow conduit and the vasculature via a first vascular location of a non-primary blood vessel using a minimally invasive surgical procedure to permit the flow of blood to the pump from the vasculature; providing fluid communication between a distal end of the outflow conduit and the vasculature via a second vascular location of a non-primary blood vessel using a minimally invasive surgical procedure to permit the flow of blood away from the pump to the vasculature; operating said pump to perfuse blood therethrough and into the patient's circulatory system at about 3 liters/minute or less. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first vascular location comprises an iliac artery. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first vascular location comprises a femoral artery. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the second vascular location comprises a subclavian artery. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the second vascular location comprises an axillary artery. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first vascular location comprises a vein. 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising coupling a connector with a blood vessel at the second vascular location and coupling the distal end of the outflow conduit with the connector to provide fluid communication between the outflow conduit and the vasculature. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the connector comprises a T-shaped fitting. 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the connector comprises a divergence configured to have a selected angle relative to the vessel to which the connector is connected. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the pump, inflow conduit, and outflow conduit comprise a synthetic biocompatible material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). 11. The method of claim 1, wherein providing fluid communication between the distal end of the inflow conduit and the vasculature comprises providing an anastomosis connection therebetween. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein providing fluid communication between the distal end of the outflow conduit and the vasculature comprises providing an anastomosis connection therebetween. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the outflow conduit is fluidly coupled at the second vascular location to direct blood flow into the aorta. 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising providing an acute angle between the direction of flow toward the second vascular location and the direction of flow in the vessel at the second vascular location such that blood flow is directed into the aorta. 15. The method of claim 1, percutaneously placing in fluid communication with the vasculature the distal end of at least one of said inflow conduit and outflow conduit. 16. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting the pump subcutaneously in the patient. 17. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting the pump extrathoracically in the patient. 18. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting the pump minimally subdermally in the patient. 19. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting the pump in the patient's groin area. 20. The method of claim 1, further comprising powering the pump using an extracorporeal battery. 21. The method of claim 20, further comprising attaching the extracorporeal battery to the side of the patient. 22. The method of claim 1, further comprising implanting a battery within the patient and powering the pump with the implanted battery. 23. The method of claim 22, wherein the battery is transcutaneously rechargeable. 24. The method of claim 1, wherein providing fluid communication with the vasculature via the first vascular location comprises inserting a cannula coupled with the inflow conduit into the vasculature at the first vascular location. 25. The method of claim 1, wherein providing fluid communication with the vasculature via the second vascular location comprises inserting a cannula coupled with the outflow conduit into the vasculature at the second vascular location.
