The apparatus of claim 1 including first and second series electrical connections configured to measure an electrical current through the battery. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 including a databus connection configured to couple to a databus of the vehicle and wherein the memory is further configured to store data received from the databus. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 including an output configured to provide an output to an operator related to battery condition. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the stored digital samples are a function of a forcing function applied to the battery. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 including an output configured to output the stored digital samples. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the mount comprises a magnetic mount. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first electrical connection comprises a battery clamp. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein operation of the vehicle is detected based upon a voltage applied to the battery. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein operation of the vehicle is sensed based upon monitoring of a databus of the vehicle. 11. The apparatus of claim 1 including a current sensor configured to sense an electrical current though the battery. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the current connector is configured to non-invasively couple to a conductor coupled to the battery. 13. A method of diagnosing operation of a vehicle electrical system, comprising: temporarily coupling a diagnostic device electrically in series to a battery of a vehicle; operating the vehicle; detecting operation of an engine of the vehicle and responsively digitally sampling an electrical signal through the series connection to the battery during operation of the vehicle to obtain a plurality of digital samples; storing the plurality of digital samples in a memory; removing the diagnostic device from the vehicle; and analyzing the stored plurality of digital samples following the step of removing. 14. The method of claim 13 including coupling a first and a second battery electrical connections to the battery and measuring a voltage across the battery. 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the battery connections comprise Kelvin connections. 16. The method of claim 13 including connecting to a databus of the vehicle and storing data retrieved from the databus. 17.
