A body of iron, steel or other such ferrous material is protected from thermochemical erosion by a layer of an iron nitride having a relatively low nitrogen content. The atomic percentage of nitrogen in the iron nitride layer is no greater than 20%, and in specific embodiments is in the range of 10-15%. A ferrous article having a surface which is resistant to thermochemical erosion, said article comprising: a layer of an iron nitride which is disposed upon said surface of the article, said iron nitride being characterized in that the atomic percentage of nitrogen therein is greater than 0 but no more than 20%. 2.
