A method for controlling a user station configured for communications with a multiplicity of independently-operated data sources via a non-proprietary network includes steps for providing a user interface to enable a user at the user station to select multiple ones of the multiplicity of independently-operated data object sources to be polled; automatically polling each of the selected data object sources in order to determine availability of desired data at each of the selected data object sources; and automatically transporting desired data determined to be available from each of the selected data object sources to the user station. Software and a user station for implementing the method are also described.

A first portable storage medium having stored thereon first fixed content and computer-executable instructions, that, if executed by a computing device at a user station, cause the computing device to perform a method comprising: accessing first remote content from a first remote content source, the first remote content relating to the first fixed content; and accessing second remote content from a second remote content source, the second remote content relating to second fixed content, the second fixed content being different from the first fixed content, and the second fixed content being included on a second portable storage medium; presenting the first fixed content at the user station together with the first remote content in such a manner to enable perceiving a seamless integration of the first fixed content and the first remote content; and presenting the second fixed content at the user station together with the second remote content in such a manner to enable perceiving a seamless integration of the second fixed content and the second remote content. 14. The first portable storage medium of claim 13, further comprising a specification of predefined transport tasks, wherein the user station initiates connections to the first remote content source in accordance with the predefined transport tasks. 15. The first portable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the first remote content is provided to the user station to have a first look and feel specific to the first fixed content and wherein the second remote content is provided to the user station to have a second look and feel specific to the second fixed content. 16. The first portable storage medium of claim 15, wherein the first look and feel is customized by an author of the first fixed content and wherein the second look and feel is customized by an author of the second fixed content. 17. The first portable storage medium of claim 13, wherein each of the first remote content and the second remote content includes a web page. 18. The first portable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the first remote content is coded with a markup language available on the first remote content source and wherein the second remote content is coded with a markup language available on the second remote content source. 19. The first portable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the computer executable software can be at least temporarily loaded on the user station to establish connections between the user station and the first and second remote content sources. 20. The first portable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the connections are initiated by a user. 21. The first portable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the connections are made in accordance with a specification included in at least one of the first fixed content and the second fixed content. 22. The first portable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the connections are perceived to be transparent at the user station. 23. The first portable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the first portable storage medium further includes link data identifying the first remote content source. 24. The method of claim 13, wherein computer executable software is included in said second portable storage medium. 25. A method for distributing content to a user station, comprising: providing, on a computing device, a first content object that is retained in persistent storage at the user station and includes metadata sufficient to enable a software transporter to obtain at least one first supplementary content object associated with the first content object from a remote source over a communications network; and using a second content object that is retained in persistent storage at the user station and includes metadata sufficient to obtain at least one second supplementary content object associated with the second content object from a remote source over a communications network; receiving at the user station the second supplementary content object from a remote source that is different from the remote source that provides the first supplementary content object; determining the sources from which to receive the first and second supplementary content objects transparently to a user at the user station as a function of the respective metadata; presenting the first content object at the user station together with the first supplementary content object in such a manner to enable perceiving a seamless integration of the first content object and the first supplementary content object; and presenting the second content object at the user station together with the second supplementary content object in such a manner to enable perceiving a seamless integration of the second content object and the second supplementary content object. 26.
