A device for closing an aperture in a vessel wall, the aperture having an external opening in an external region of the vessel wall and an internal opening in an internal region of the vessel wall, the device comprising: an elongated member having a longitudinal axis and positionable inside the vessel against the internal opening of the aperture, the elongated member having a dimension to prevent egress of fluid through the aperture, the elongated member movable between a first position for delivery and a transverse position for placement, in the placement position the elongated member having an upper surface positioned adjacent the aperture; and a material forming first and second curved legs having ends positionable external of the vessel, the legs curving in different directions and extending toward an upper surface of the elongated member, and a retention portion formed in the material to retain the legs in an elongate position during placement of the elongated member inside the vessel, the retention portion formed by a first notch in the first leg and a second notch in the second leg, the first and second notches configured and dimensioned to receive a retaining component of a pusher. 2. The device of claim 1, wherein the cooperating notches form an opening. 3. The device of claim 2, wherein the two curved legs are composed of shape memory metal material. 4. The device of claim 1, wherein the material is fabricated to separate at a first end into curved leg regions and further fabricated with a tab at a second end to connect the curved legs to the elongated member. 5. The device of claim 4, wherein the legs are fabricated of metal material and the elongated member is fabricated of a polymeric material and is molded over the metal material. 6. The device of claim 4, wherein the elongated member is composed of a resorbable material. 7. The device of claim 1, wherein the elongated member has a thickness in a middle portion greater than a thickness at the end portions. 8. The device of claim 1 for use with a delivery system, wherein the system includes a sheath having a pusher positioned therein, the pusher including the retention component releasably positioned within the retention opening formed by the cooperating notches. 9. The device of claim 1, wherein the elongated member is substantially oval shaped with substantially linear sides. 10. The device of claim 2, wherein the material includes an enlarged head for connecting the material to the elongated member. 11. In combination a device for closing an aperture in a vessel wall, the aperture having an external opening in an external region of the vessel wall and an internal opening in an internal region of the vessel wall, and a delivery system for the device, the combination comprising: the device including an elongated member having a longitudinal axis and a transverse axis and positionable inside the vessel against the internal opening of the aperture to prevent egress of fluid through the aperture and two legs extending from the elongated member, a retention portion formed by a first notch in one of the legs and a second notch in the other of the legs, the two legs curving in different directions and extending toward an upper surface of the elongated member and positionable external of the vessel to help retain the elongated member in position, the elongated member movable between a first position for delivery and a transverse position for placement, in the placement position the elongated member having an upper surface positioned adjacent the aperture, and the delivery system including a tube and a pusher slidably positioned within the tube to move the elongated member distally, the pusher including a retaining pin movable with the pusher and releasably engagable with the legs, the pin engaging the first and second notches to retain the legs within the tube and releasing the legs to enable delivery from the tube. 12. The combination of claim 11, wherein the elongated member has a first thickness at an end portion and a second greater thickness at a central portion. 13. The combination of claim 11, wherein the elongated member is composed of a resorbable material and the two legs are composed of shape memory metal material.
