A method and system for managing at least one animal is disclosed. The method can include imaging, such as ultrasound imaging, a lung of a live animal, such as a ruminant animal or bovine animal. The imaging can be performed to determine a degree of respiratory damage from past respiratory illness. After imaging, information regarding respiratory damage can be used to select at least one aspect of the treatment, care or disposition of the animal. For example, the information can be used to select the amount or type of feed provided to the animal at a feedlot. The information also can be used to select how long the animal should be housed at the feedlot prior to slaughter. If an animal is diagnosed with a respiratory illness, information about its degree of respiratory damage from past respiratory illness also can be used to select the appropriate medical treatment or lack of treatment.

I claim: 1. A method for managing at least one animal, comprising: receiving a live animal at a feedlot; entering into a computer system information relating to the animal; directing the animal to a processing location remote from a feed pen; measuring the animal at the processing location and entering measurement data in the computer system including at least weight; associating the measurement data with a unique identifier for the animal in the computer system; imaging at least one lung of the animal to determine a degree of respiratory damage in the animal; assigning the animal a respiratory damage designation corresponding to the animal's degree of respiratory damage; recording the respiratory damage designation in the computer system; associating the respiratory damage designation with the unique identifier for the animal in the computer system; comparing an image of the animal's lung to at least one image from another animal to determine whether the image indicates active or past respiratory disease; determining in the computer system, from at least in part the measurement data and the respiratory damage designation, a projected condition for the animal; and selecting at least one aspect of treatment, care or disposition of the animal based on the animal's respiratory damage designation and projected condition. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the animal is a ruminant. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the animal is a bovine. 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the respiratory damage is a result of past respiratory illness and the animal has substantially no symptoms of active respiratory illness at the time of imaging. 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein imaging comprises ultrasound imaging. 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein determining respiratory damage comprises evaluating scarring, fibrosis, necrosis, other lung lesions caused by past respiratory illness, or combinations thereof. 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein selecting at least one aspect of the treatment, care or disposition of the animal comprises selecting the amount or type of feed provided to the animal. 8. The method according to claim 1, wherein selecting at least one aspect of treatment, care or disposition of the animal comprises selecting how long the animal should remain at the feedlot prior to slaughter. 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising: receiving a plurality of live animals; and imaging at least one lung of each of the plurality of live animals to determine a degree of respiratory damage in each of the plurality of animals. 10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the animals are ruminants. 11. The method according to claim 9, wherein the animals are cattle. 12. The method according to claim 9, wherein the respiratory damage in one or more of the plurality of animals is a result of past respiratory illness and the one or more of the plurality of animals has substantially no symptoms of active respiratory illness at the time of imaging. 13. The method according to claim 9, wherein imaging comprises ultrasound imaging. 14. The method according to claim 9, wherein determining respiratory damage comprises evaluating scarring, fibrosis, necrosis, other lung lesions caused by past respiratory illness, or combinations thereof. 15. The method according to claim 9, further comprising providing one or more respiratory damage designations to a buyer to aid the buyer in a decision regarding purchasing one or more of the plurality of animals. 16. The method according to claim 1, further comprising providing the respiratory damage designation to a buyer to aid the buyer in a decision regarding purchasing the animal. 17. The method according to claim 1, wherein imaging at least one lung of a live animal comprises: providing at the processing location an ultrasound measuring apparatus comprising a reservoir containing a conductive liquid, an ultrasonic transducer, a handpiece for positioning the transducer adjacent a live animal, the handpiece further comprising a dispenser for dispensing conductive liquid from the reservoir onto the live animal, and a liquid pump fluidly connected to both the reservoir and the dispenser; and imaging the at least one lung with the ultrasound measuring apparatus at the processing location. 18. The method of claim 1 where comparing an image of the animal's lung to at least one image from another animal comprises comparing grayscale intensity of the image to grayscale intensity of a plurality of images from other animals. 19. A method for selectively treating animals, comprising: imaging at least one lung of a live animal to produce a grayscale image and determine a degree of respiratory damage in the animal from past respiratory illness; comparing grayscale intensity of the grayscale image to grayscale intensity of a plurality of grayscale images from other animals to determine whether the grayscale image indicates a past respiratory illness; assigning the animal a respiratory damage designation corresponding to the animal's degree of respiratory damage from the past respiratory illness; recording the respiratory damage designation in an electronic database in a computer system; associating the respiratory damage designation with a unique identifier for the animal in the electronic database; determining in the computer system, from at least in part measurement data associated with the animal's unique identifier and the respiratory damage designation, a projected condition for the animal; diagnosing an active respiratory illness in the animal; and selecting a medical treatment or electing no medical treatment for the animal based on the animal's degree of respiratory damage from past respiratory illness. 20. The method according to claim 19, wherein the animal is a ruminant. 21. The method according to claim 19, wherein the animal is a bovine. 22. The method according to claim 19, wherein selecting the medical treatment of the animal comprises selecting whether or not to administer drugs to the animal. 23. The method according to claim 19, wherein the animal has substantially no symptoms of active respiratory illness at the time of imaging. 24. The method according to claim 19, wherein imaging comprises ultrasound imaging. 25. The method according to claim 19, wherein determining respiratory damage comprises evaluating scarring, fibrosis, necrosis, other lung lesions caused by past respiratory illness, or combinations thereof. 26. A method for managing at least one animal, comprising: receiving a live animal at a feedlot, wherein the animal has substantially no symptoms of active respiratory illness; entering into a computer system information relating to the animal; measuring the animal at a processing location remote from a feed pen and entering measurement data in the computer system including at least weight; associating the measurement data with a unique identifier for the animal in the computer system; providing an ultrasound measuring apparatus at the processing location; imaging at least one lung of the live animal at the processing location with the ultrasound measuring apparatus to produce a grayscale image and determine a degree of past respiratory damage in the animal; comparing grayscale intensity of the grayscale image to grayscale intensity of a plurality of grayscale images from other animals to determine whether the grayscale image indicates a past respiratory illness; assigning the animal a respiratory damage designation corresponding to the animal's degree of past respiratory damage; recording the respiratory damage designation in the computer system; associating the respiratory damage designation with the unique identifier for the animal in the computer system; determining in the computer system, from at least in part the measurement data and the respiratory damage designation, a projected condition for the animal; and selecting at least one aspect of treatment, care or disposition of the animal based on the animal's respiratory damage designation and the projected condition. 27.
