Planting pots and a multi-compartment tray are provided, the pots and tray having a self-orienting configuration for urging the pots into proper alignment when same are placed within compartments of the tray. The pots include angled recesses disposed radially about the bottom portion of the pots. The compartments of the tray include angled protrusions disposed radially about the bottom portion of the compartment. The angled recesses of the pot engage with the angled protrusions of the compartment when the pot is placed in the compartment to urge the pot into proper alignment. A plurality of slots are included along an upper portion of each pot for allowing optional identification tags to be inserted thereinto. The identification tags, in addition to logos, artwork, or other indicia, if included, are positioned by the self-orienting configuration of the pots and tray to face in a desired direction.

What is claimed is: 1. A planting pot system comprising: a plurality of pots, each of the pots having a top portion, a body portion, a bottom portion, and a plurality of angled alignment recesses disposed about the bottom portion, each of the recesses including first and second substantially planar angled surfaces joined at a radially oriented upper end, the bottom portion of each of the plurality of pots including a plurality of apertures to allow drainage of fluid and aeration; and a multi-compartment tray having a plurality of compartments with angled alignment protrusions disposed on bottom portions of the compartments, each of the protrusions including first and second substantially planar angled surfaces joined at a radially oriented upper end, the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the protrusions matching and contacting the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the recesses so as to align the pots when the pots are inserted into the compartments. 2. The planting pot system of claim 1, wherein the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the recesses are complimentary to the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the protrusions. 3. The planting pot system of claim 2, wherein each of the recesses has a depth, each of the protrusions having a height approximately equal to the depth of each of the recesses. 4. The planting pot system of claim 1, wherein the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the recesses meet and are joined at the radially oriented upper end so as to form a tapered configuration. 5. The planting pot system of claim 1, wherein the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the recesses meet and are joined at the radially oriented upper end so as to form a generally triangular configuration. 6. The planting pot system of claim 5, wherein the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the recesses are oriented at an angle less than 90 degrees relative to the bottom portion of the pot. 7. The planting pot system of claim 6, wherein the first and second substantially planar angled surfaces of each of the protrusions are oriented at an angle less than 90 degrees relative to the bottom portion of the tray. 8. The planting pot system of claim 1, further comprising an identification tag, the top portion being connected to the body portion by a shoulder, the shoulder having a slot therein, the identification tag being removably insertable in the slot. 9. The planting pot system of claim 8, wherein the tray has an inner bevel disposed at a top portion of each of the plurality of compartments so as to provide space to receive a portion of the identification tag between the pot and the tray. 10. The planting pot system of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of alignment recesses and protrusions further comprises a radial surface connected to the first and second angled surfaces. 11. The planting pot system of claim 10, wherein the first angled surface, the second angled surface, and the radial surface are joined at edges to form tapered recesses and protrusions. 12. The planting pot system of claim 1, wherein the alignment recesses slide against the alignment protrusions along a direction having vertical and horizontal components to urge the pots into proper alignment. 13. The planting pot system of claim 12, wherein when a downward force is exerted on one of the plurality of pots, the alignment recesses co-act with the alignment protrusions of the tray to urge the pot into a desired orientation. 14. The planting pot system of claim 1, wherein each of the compartments includes four angled alignment protrusions and each of the pots includes four angled alignment recesses. 15. A planting pot system comprising: a plurality of pots, each of the pots having a top portion, a tapered cylindrical body portion, a bottom portion, and a plurality of angled alignment recesses disposed about the bottom portion, each of the recesses including first and second planar angled surfaces joined at a radially oriented upper end, the bottom portion including a bottom surface having flat surfaces along the circumference of the bottom portion, the angled alignment recesses being recessed relative to the bottom surface; and a multi-compartment tray having a plurality of compartments, each defined by a tapered cylindrical sidewall sized to receive a pot, each compartment having angled alignment protrusions disposed on bottom portions of the compartments, each of the protrusions including first and second angled surfaces joined at a radially oriented upper end, the first and second angled surfaces of each of the protrusions contacting the first and second angled surfaces of each of the recesses so as to align the pots when the pots are inserted into the compartments. 16. The planting pot system of claim 15, wherein the tapered cylindrical sidewall of the compartments tapers from a wider upper end to a lower end having a relatively smaller diameter. 17. A planting pot system comprising: a plurality of pots, each of pots having a top portion, a body portion, a bottom portion, and a plurality of angled alignment recesses disposed about the bottom portion; a multi-compartment tray having a plurality of compartments with angled alignment protrusions disposed on bottom portions of the compartments, each of the protrusions contacting the recesses so as to align the pots when the pots are inserted into the compartments; and a channel spaced between the bottom portion of the pot and a bottom portion of the compartment to allow drainage of fluid and aeration, wherein each of the recesses includes first and second substantially planar angled surfaces joined at a radially oriented upper end, and wherein each of the protrusions includes first and second substantially planar angled surfaces joined at a radially oriented upper end, and wherein each of the compartments is defined by a tapered cylindrical sidewall.
