Systems for coupling end portions of two elongated heater portions and methods of using such systems to treat a subsurface formation are described herein. A system may include a holding system configured to hold end portions of the two elongated heater portions so that the end portions are abutted together or located near each other; a shield for enclosing the end portions, and one or more inert gas inlets configured to provide at least one inert gas to flush the system with inert gas during welding of the end portions. The shield may be configured to inhibit oxidation during welding that joins the end portions together. The shield may include a hinged door that, when closed, is configured to at least partially isolate the interior of the shield from the atmosphere. The hinged door, when open, is configured to allow access to the interior of the shield.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for coupling end portions of two elongated heater portions, comprising: a shield for enclosing the end portions, the shield configured to inhibit oxidation during welding that joins the end portions together, the shield comprising: an elongated tubular body configured to circumferentially surround at least the end portions of the two elongated heater portions, wherein at least a portion of the elongated tubular body comprises a hinged door that, when closed, is configured to form a substantially airtight seal to substantially seal the interior of the shield from the atmosphere, and the hinged door, when open, is configured to allow access to the interior of the shield; an end plate configured to at least partially enclose an end of the tubular body during use, wherein the end plate comprises a hole configured to accept at least one of the two elongated heater portions, and a slot extending between the hole and an edge of the end plate, wherein the slot is configured such that at least one of the two elongated heater portions can be slid laterally through the slot into the hole; and one or more inert gas inlets configured to provide at least one inert gas to flush the interior of the shield with inert gas during welding of the end portions. 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one source of inert gas. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the inert gas comprises argon. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the shield comprises a window configured to allow an operator of the system to view the welding of the end portions. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the shield is configured to allow a positive pressure of inert gas to be provided during welding of the end portions. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the shield comprises one or more clamps to secure the end portions of the heaters to the shield. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the end portions are configured to be orbital welded to join the end portions together. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the shield is configured to allow the heater portions to be moved through the shield such that a non-welded end portion of one of the heater portions can be positioned within the shield for welding to an end portion of a third elongated heater portion. 9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a control circuit configured to monitor hydrocarbon gas concentration in the shield, wherein the control circuit is configured to shut off welding of the end portions when the hydrocarbon gas concentration exceeds a minimum value. 10. The system of claim 1, wherein the heater portions are configured to be used to heat a subsurface formation. 11. The system of claim 1, wherein the shield comprises one or more inert gas outlets configured to allow gas to be flushed through the shield. 12. A system for coupling end portions of two elongated heater portions, comprising: a holding system configured to hold end portions of the two elongated heater portions such that the end portions are abutted together or located near each other; and a shield for enclosing the end portions, the shield configured to inhibit oxidation during welding that joins the end portions together, the shield comprising: an elongated tubular body configured to circumferentially surround at least a portions of the elongated heater portions, wherein at least a portion of the elongated tubular body comprises a hinged door that, when closed, is configured to at least partially isolate the interior of the shield from the atmosphere, and the hinged door, when open, is configured to allow access to the interior of the shield; an end plate at least partially enclosing an end of the elongated tubular body, wherein the end plate comprise a hole of a size configured to accept at least one of the two elongated heater portions, and having an elongated slot that extends radially from the hole to an edge of the end plate, wherein the slot is configured such that the at least one of the two elongated heater portions can be slid through the slot and into the hole; an insert configured to be inserted into the slot, wherein a first end of the insert is configured to be in or in near contact with the at least one of the two elongated heater portions during use and a second end of the insert is configured to be retained by the hinged door in a closed position, such that the insert encloses the at least one of the two elongated heater portions within the hole; and one or more inert gas inlets configured to provide at least one inert gas to flush the interior of the shield with inert gas during welding of the end portions. 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the slot is configured such that the shield can be slid over at least one of the two elongated heater portions in a direction substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of at least one of the two elongated heater portions. 14. The system of claim 12, wherein the shield, when closed, forms a substantially airtight seal to substantially seal the interior of the shield from the atmosphere. 15. The system of claim 12, wherein the shield is configured to allow a positive pressure of inert gas to be provided during welding of the end portions. 16. The system of claim 12, wherein the shield comprises one or more inert gas outlets configured to allow gas to be flushed through the shield. 17. The system of claim 12, further comprising a control circuit configured to monitor hydrocarbon gas concentration in the shield, wherein the control circuit is configured to shut off welding of the end portions when the hydrocarbon gas concentration exceeds a minimum value. 18. A system for coupling end portions of two elongated heater portions, comprising: a shield for enclosing the end portions, the shield configured to inhibit oxidation during welding that joins the end portions together, the shield comprising an enclosure configured to be disposed about the end portions, wherein the enclosure comprises a first end having a first hole configured to pass a first of the two elongated heater portions in a longitudinal direction therethrough, and a second end having a second hole configured to pass a second of the two elongated heater portions in a longitudinal direction therethrough, wherein the first end comprises a slot extending from the first hole to an edge of the first end such that at least one of the two elongated heater portions can be slid laterally through the slot into the hole; and a hinged door that, when closed, is configured to at least partially isolate the interior of the enclosure from the atmosphere, and the hinged door, when open, is configured to allow access to the interior of the enclosure; and one or more inert gas inlets configured to provide at least one inert gas to flush the interior of the enclosure with inert gas during welding of the end portions; and a clamp coupled to the enclosure, wherein the clamp is located proximate and external to the first end of the enclosure and is configured to couple to a portion of the first of the two elongated heater portions located external to the shield during use. 19. The system of claim 18, wherein the first end of the shield comprises a first end plate having a slot that extends radially from the first hole of the first end to an edge of the first end plate, wherein the slot is configured to enable at least one of the two elongated heater portions to be slid laterally through the slot into the first hole. 20. The system of claim 19, further comprising an insert configured to be inserted in the slot, wherein the insert is configured to enclose at least one of the two elongated heater portions within the first hole. 21. The system of claim 19, wherein the slot is configured such that the shield can be slid over at least one of the two elongated heater portions in a direction substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of at least one of the two elongated heater portions. 22. The system of claim 18, wherein the shield is configured to allow a positive pressure of inert gas to be provided during welding of the end portions. 23. The system of claim 18, wherein the shield comprises one or more inert gas outlets configured to allow gas to be flushed through the shield. 24. The system of claim 18, further comprising a control circuit configured to monitor hydrocarbon gas concentration in the shield, wherein the control circuit is configured to shut off welding of the end portions when the hydrocarbon gas concentration exceeds a minimum value.
