The present invention provides a marine reversing gear assembly, wherein a manual directional control valve 7a and an electromagnetic directional control valve 7b for a forward/reverse directional control valve 7 for hydraulic oil supply circuit 10 have a common structure of an oil line joint surface for the hydraulic oil supply circuit 10 for friction discs of a forward clutch 2f and a reverse clutch 2a, and the forward/reverse directional control valve 7 for the hydraulic oil supply circuit 10 can be changed to either the manual directional control valve 7a or the electromagnetic directional control valve 7b by exchanging spools 7c or 7e of the manual directional control valve 7a or the electromagnetic directional control valve 7b. Therefore, the operational manner of the forward/reverse directional control valve for the hydraulic oil supply line of a marine reversing gear assembly can be changed quite easily between the manual directional control valve and the electromagnetic directional control valve.

What is claimed is: 1. A marine reversing gear assembly, comprising: a casing that accommodates a clutch and gear mechanism to transmit a rotation of an input shaft to an output shaft in a reduced or reversed manner, wherein the casing includes a lower part with a reservoir for holding hydraulic oi

What is claimed is: 1. A marine reversing gear assembly, comprising: a casing that accommodates a clutch and gear mechanism to transmit a rotation of an input shaft to an output shaft in a reduced or reversed manner, wherein the casing includes a lower part with a reservoir for holding hydraulic oil used to lubricate the clutch and gear mechanism; a first insertion opening defined in the casing; a second insertion opening defined in the casing; and a dipstick for fitting in either of the first and the second dipstick openings for checking the hydraulic oil level in the casing, wherein each of the first and second insertion openings is sized and shaped to receive and retain the dipstick, the first insertion opening is located generally on an opposite side of the casing from second insertion opening, the dipstick and the first insertion opening define a path between the first insertion opening and the hydraulic oil that is unobstructed by the clutch and gear mechanism so that the dipstick can extend between the first insertion opening and the hydraulic oil without interference by the clutch and gear mechanism, when the dipstick is fitted in the first insertion opening, the dipstick and the second insertion opening define a path between the second insertion opening and the hydraulic oil that is unobstructed by the clutch and gear mechanism so that the dipstick extends between the second insertion opening and the hydraulic oil without interference by the clutch and gear mechanism, when the dipstick is fitted in the second insertion opening, the insertion openings are sealable with plugs, and the insertion openings are all defined on the casing at an equidistant height from the reservoir. 2. The marine reversing gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the first dipstick opening is located a predetermined distance above an oil level of the casing in a vertical direction, and the second dipstick opening is also located the predetermined distance above the oil level of the casing in the vertical direction. 3. The marine reversing gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the gear assembly includes a plug for sealing a one of the first and second insertion opening that is not occupied by the dipstick. 4. The marine reversing gear assembly according to claim 1, wherein the insertion openings are located above the reservoir on an upper surface of the casing. 5. The marine reversing gear assembly according to claim 1, further comprising a controller located on one side of the casing to control a pressure of the hydraulic oil, wherein ones of the insertion openings situated on a same side of the casing as the controller are sufficiently distant from the controller so that the controller does not hinder removal and insertion of the dipstick from the ones of the insertion openings.
