An information and control system for personnel transport devices. In one embodiment, the information and control system is coupled to the elevator system of a building, and includes a touch panel input device, a flat panel display having a touch sensitive screen, and speech recognition and synthesis systems serving each elevator car. The speech recognition and synthesis systems and input device(s) are operatively coupled to a processor and storage devices having a plurality of different types of data stored thereon. Each elevator car is also a client connected to a LAN, WAN, intranet, or Internet, and capable of exchanging data with and retrieving data therefrom. Functions performed by the information and control system include a voice-actuated building directory, download of selected data to personal electronic devices (PEDs), monitoring of areas adjacent to the elevator car on destination floors, and control of lighting and security monitoring in selectable areas of destination floors. The system is also optionally fitted with an RFID interrogator/reader capable of recognizing RFID tags carried by passengers on the elevator, thereby granting access to various controlled locations automatically after password authentication. The RFID system also allows the authenticated passenger(s) to control utilities such as lighting and HVAC within specific zones on their destination floors. The information and control system is also optionally equipped with an occupancy estimating sub-system which allows elevator cars to bypass calling floors when their capacity is reached or exceeded.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of selectively providing contextually relevant information to a user of a transport apparatus, comprising: analyzing a single user input made via software of an input device of a personal electronic device in data communication with a separate apparatus of said trans
What is claimed is: 1. A method of selectively providing contextually relevant information to a user of a transport apparatus, comprising: analyzing a single user input made via software of an input device of a personal electronic device in data communication with a separate apparatus of said transport apparatus to determine at least one context associated with said user input; selectively retrieving stored information based at least in part on said at least one context; and downloading at least a portion of said stored information to the personal electronic device of said user; wherein said acts of analyzing, retrieving and downloading are performed automatically without further user input; and wherein said at least portion of stored information is substantially tailored particularly to said user. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said act of analyzing comprises matching at least a portion of data generated in response to said user input to one or more stored advertising content files, and said act of selectively retrieving comprises accessing at least one of said one or more advertising content files. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of analyzing comprises associating at least one value for at least one parameter with said at least one user input, and identifying said stored information for retrieval based on said at least one value of said at least one parameter. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the act of associating said at least one value with said at least one parameter comprises associating a data word with a particular selection of a function of said input device selected by said user, and the act of identifying said stored information comprises matching said word to data contained in a database. 5. The method of claim 3, wherein the act of associating said at least one value with said at least one parameter comprises associating a particular selection of a function of said input device selected by said user with a subset of said stored information relating to said selected function. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein said function comprises obtaining primary information relating to a particular topic, and said subset of stored information comprises secondary information relating to said topic. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said primary information comprises information selected from the group consisting of: (i) a weather forecast; (ii) current news; (iii) hotels or restaurants associated with a geographic area, and (iv) stock or other financial quotes. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein said secondary information comprises advertising information selected from the group consisting of: (i) local television weather or news programs; (ii) local hotels or restaurants; and (iii) financial services providers. 9. Apparatus adapted to selectively provide information to one or more passengers of a transport apparatus, comprising: first computerized apparatus configured to incidentally sample the speech of at least one of said passengers, said incidentally sampled speech not being used as an input command; second computerized apparatus configured to retrieve stored information based on said sampled speech, said stored information being contextually related to at least portions of said sampled speech; and display interface apparatus configured to generate signals relating to at least a portion of said stored information for display on a display device. 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said first computerized apparatus comprises a computer program adapted to sample without requiring a structured or prescribed user speech pattern. 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said sampling without requiring a structured or prescribed user speech pattern comprises sampling during an ad hoc conversation between two or more human beings. 12. The method of claim 10, wherein said act of sampling without requiring a structured or prescribed user voice input comprises sampling during an ad hoc conversation. 13. The method of claim 10, further comprising: analyzing the context of said speech using an algorithm; and identifying said stored information using said algorithm and based at least in part based on said context. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein said stored information comprises information pertaining to an aspect of or structure associated with said transport apparatus. 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said stored information comprises advertising or promotional information. 16. The method of claim 10, wherein the act of sampling comprises using Hidden Markov Modeling (HMM) to analyze said speech. 17. A method of selectively providing information to a passenger of a transport apparatus, comprising: receiving at a processing apparatus of said transport apparatus at least one selection made by said passenger via an input device of a personal electronic device of said passenger; retrieving stored information based on said at least one selection and a geographic context related to said at least one selection; and providing at least a portion of said stored information to said personal electronic device of said at least one passenger via a signal interface disposed within said transport apparatus; wherein prior to said receiving, said processing apparatus implements a wireless authentication protocol that authenticates at least said passenger, at least a portion of said protocol comprising the transfer of encrypted authentication data which must be decrypted by said processing apparatus for said authentication to occur. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the act of providing comprises providing a video clip or moving animation having advertising content associated therewith. 19. The method of claim 17, wherein said retrieving stored information comprises accessing said stored information via an interface to a remote network. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein said remote network comprises the Internet. 21. The method of claim 17, wherein said at least one selection comprises selection of a function key of said input device, and said acts of retrieving and providing are performed automatically upon receiving said user selection. 22. A method of providing contextually relevant information to a user of a transport apparatus, comprising: authenticating the user via a wireless interface of the transport apparatus when they are at least in proximity to the transport apparatus; receiving a user input made via a software application of a personal electronic device; determining at least one context associated with said input; retrieving stored information based at least in part on said at least one context; downloading at least a portion of said stored information to said electronic device; wherein said downloading at least a portion of said stored information comprises downloading at least a portion of said stored information which has been automatically customized for said user based at least in part on said authenticating. 23. The method of claim 22, wherein said input comprises a request for obtaining information relating to a particular topic, and said stored information comprises advertising information relating to said at least one context associated with said topic. 24. The method of claim 23, wherein said information relating to a particular topic comprises electronic news, and said advertising information comprises advertisements associated with said news. 25. The method of claim 23, wherein said information relating to a particular topic comprises one or more electronic maps of a local area, and said advertising information comprises advertisements associated with local businesses associated with said local area. 26. The method of claim 22, wherein said downloading is performed using an interface different than said wireless interface. 27. The method of claim 22, wherein said customization of said at least portion of said stored information is performed using a configuration file having a configuration described therein, said configuration being at least in part determined based on one or more prior selections of said user. 28. A method of selectively providing contextually relevant information to a user of a transport apparatus, comprising: responsive to a user input made via an input device of a mobile electronic device adapted for data communication with said transport apparatus, determining at least one context associated with said input; selectively retrieving stored information based at least in part on said at least one context; and downloading at least a portion of said stored information to said mobile device of said user from the transport apparatus; wherein said user input comprises selection of a preset function of said mobile device, and said act of determining is based on the function of said preset function, and not on any other inputs made by said user. 29. The method of claim 28, wherein said acts of determining, selectively retrieving and downloading are performed automatically and without user intervention. 30. The method of claim 29, wherein said stored information comprises at least video-based advertising content. 31. Apparatus for selectively providing contextually relevant information to a user of a transport apparatus, said apparatus comprising: computerized apparatus configured to, responsive to a user input received via an input device of a user mobile device operatively communicating with said computerized apparatus, determine at least one context; data access apparatus configured to selectively retrieve stored information based at least in part on said at least one context; and processing apparatus adapted to generate signals, said signals being useful to download at least a portion of said stored information to said mobile device; wherein said user input comprises selection of a preset function of said mobile device, and said determination by said computerized apparatus is based on the function of said preset function, and not on any other inputs made by said user. 32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein said determination, selective retrieval and generation of signals are performed automatically and without user intervention. 33. The method of claim 32, wherein said stored information comprises at least video-based advertising content. 34. A method of selectively providing information to one or more passengers of a transport apparatus, comprising: sampling the speech of a plurality of passengers at a plurality of different times, and determining at least one statistic relating to the sampled speech; retrieving stored information based at least in part on said at least one statistic, said stored information being contextually related to at least portions of said sampled speech; and displaying at least a portion of said stored information on at least one display device viewable by said at least one passenger. 35. A method of selectively providing information to a user of a transport apparatus, comprising: analyzing a user input made via the software of a personal electronic device in data communication with processing apparatus of said transport apparatus, said analyzing determining at least one context associated with said user input; selectively retrieving stored information based at least in part on said at least one context; and configuring at least a portion of said selectively retrieved information based at least in part based on the identity of said user; downloading said configured information to the personal electronic device of said user for subsequent display thereon; wherein said acts of analyzing, retrieving, downloading and configuring are performed automatically without further user input. 36. The method of claim 35, further comprising determining the identity of said user prior to said configuring. 37. The method of claim 36, wherein said determining the identity of said user prior to said configuring comprises determining said identity via input received from a wireless device configured to uniquely identify the user. 38. The method of claim 37, wherein said determining said identity via input received from a wireless device configured to uniquely identify the user comprises: a first wireless communication from said processing apparatus to said wireless device, said first communication comprising an authentication code; and a second wireless communication from the wireless device to the processing apparatus, said second communication identifying said user, said second communication only being issued if said authentication code is properly authenticated. 39. A method of selectively providing advertising to one or more users of an information system associated with a transport apparatus, comprising: sampling the inputs of a plurality of said users at a plurality of different times, and determining at least one statistic relating to the sampled inputs; retrieving stored advertising based at least in part on said at least one statistic, said stored information being contextually related to at least portions of said sampled inputs; and displaying at least a portion of said stored advertising on at least one display device of said information system. 40. The method of claim 39, wherein said inputs comprise user inputs received via at least one function key on a touch-sensitive input device. 41. The method of claim 39, wherein said stored advertising comprises a plurality of separate advertisements, and said act of displaying comprises displaying said plurality of separate advertisements according to a scheme. 42. The method of claim 41, wherein said displaying said plurality of separate advertisements according to a scheme comprises displaying said separate advertisements in sequence one after the other. 43. The method of claim 41, wherein said displaying said plurality of separate advertisements according to a scheme comprises displaying a first of said separate advertisements until an event, and then displaying at least a second of said advertisements thereafter; wherein said event comprising receiving another user input via said information system. 44. Apparatus for selectively providing advertising to one or more users of an information system associated with a transport apparatus, comprising: first apparatus configured to sample the inputs of a plurality of said users at a plurality of different times, and determine at least one frequency of occurrence relating to the sampled inputs; retrieving stored advertising based at least in part on said at least one frequency of occurrence, said stored information being contextually related to at least portions of said sampled inputs; and displaying at least a portion of said stored advertising on at least one display device of said information system. 45. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein said displaying at least a portion of said stored advertising comprises displaying first advertising which is contextually related to a first category of said sampled inputs, and displaying second advertising which is contextually related to a second category of said sampled inputs, in proportion to their respective frequencies of occurrence. 46. Apparatus adapted to provide information to one or more of a plurality of passengers of a transport apparatus, comprising: first computerized apparatus configured to sample the conversational speech between at least two of said passengers; second computerized apparatus configured to retrieve stored information based on said sampled speech, said stored information being contextually related to at least portions of said sampled speech; and display generation apparatus configured to generate signals relating to at least a portion of said stored information for use on a display device. 47. The apparatus of claim 46, wherein said stored information comprises advertising content, and said apparatus further comprises said display device, said display device positioned at least partly within said transport apparatus and viewable by said one or more of said plurality of passengers. 48. The apparatus of claim 46, wherein said one or more of said plurality of passengers comprises at least one of said at least two passengers between which said conversational speech occurs. 49. The apparatus of claim 46, wherein said display device comprises a display device disposed on a personal electronic device (PED) in data communication with said display generation apparatus. 50. Apparatus adapted to provide information to one or more of a plurality of passengers of a transport apparatus, comprising: first computerized apparatus configured to sample the speech of at least one of said passengers; second computerized apparatus configured to retrieve stored information based on said sampled speech, said stored information being contextually related to at least portions of said sampled speech; and display generation apparatus configured to generate signals relating to at least a portion of said stored information for use on a display device; wherein said second computerized apparatus is configured to retrieve said stored information based at least in part on a speech library having linguistic elements structured particularly for known ones of said passengers who commonly utilize said transport apparatus.
