The disclosed methods and apparatus relate generally to the electronics media industry, such as cable television (CATV), home shopping services, on-line computer services and computer memory applications. These methods and apparatus allow a user to access and make use of electronic media input and output devices by reference to and/or utilization of standard printed matter, such as magazines, textbooks, or any other printed matter that can be correlated to electronic media.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for displaying programming to a user, the system comprising: a printed matter having at least one machine recognizable feature; a digital pen having associated therewith a means for recognizing said feature and a transmitter for transmitting a coded signal in respons
What is claimed is: 1. A system for displaying programming to a user, the system comprising: a printed matter having at least one machine recognizable feature; a digital pen having associated therewith a means for recognizing said feature and a transmitter for transmitting a coded signal in response to the recognition of said feature; an intelligent controller having associated therewith a receiver for receiving said coded signal and means for accessing programming material; and a display unit for presenting said programming material; wherein said digital pen, in response to the recognition of said feature, causes said intelligent controller to access said programming material and said display unit to display said programming material. 2. A system according to claim 1 wherein said means for accessing programming material operates via a data link. 3. A system according to claim 1 wherein said data link is selected from a group consisting of a telephone line, a computer network, an integrated services digital network, an Ethernet network, a cable television line, a wireless network, the Internet, a wireless fidelity network, a short-range wireless connection, a Bluetooth, and a cellular network. 4. A system according to claim 1 wherein said means for recognizing said feature is selected from at a group consisting of a camera, a digital camera, a video camera, an infrared camera, a scanner, a barcode reader, a transceiver, a radio frequency identification reader, an infrared reader, a quantum dot reader, a magnetic code reader, an optical code reader, an optical reader, and a digital watermark reader. 5. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen comprises a writing means. 6. A system according to claim 5 wherein said writing means comprises ink or graphite. 7. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen comprises a powering means. 8. A system according to claim 7 wherein said powering means comprises a battery. 9. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen comprises a processing means. 10. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen comprises a memory means. 11. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen comprises a receiver. 12. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen comprises light diodes. 13. A system according to claim 12 wherein said light diodes indicate operational modes. 14. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen has a vibrating device. 15. A system according to claim 14 wherein said vibrating device indicates operational modes. 16. A system according to claim 1 wherein said digital pen comprises said display. 17. A system according to claim 1 wherein said display unit is selected from a group comprising a speaker, an alphabetical listing display, a graphic display, a LCD display, a television, a personal computer, a portable personal computer, a personal digital assistant, a cellular telephone, and a wireless communication device. 18. A system according to claim 1 wherein said machine recognizable feature is selected from a group consisting of a bar code, a universal product code, an invisible bar code, a magnetic code, a printed character, an array of printed characters, a symbol, an array of symbols, a geometric figure, an array of geometric figures, a dot, an array of dots, an invisible indicia, a two-dimensional figure, an icon, an invisible icon, a watermark, an invisible watermark, a digital watermark, a series of alphanumeric characters, a binary code, a magnetic strip, a code, an analog pattern, and a hieroglyphic character. 19. A method of providing a user access to programming material, comprising the steps of: printing a machine recognizable feature within a printed matter; providing a digital pen comprising having associated therewith a means for recognizing said feature; scanning said machine recognizable feature with said digital pen; and transmitting data associated with said machine recognizable feature via a communication link to access said programming material, wherein said programming material is related to said printed matter. 20. The method of claim 19 wherein said communication link is selected from a group consisting of a telephone line, a computer network, an integrated services digital network, an Ethernet network, a cable television line, a wireless network, the Internet, a wireless fidelity network, a short-range wireless connection, a Bluetooth, and a cellular network.
