The invention claimed is: 1. A system for controlling fluid flow to or from at least one cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the system comprising: a rotary valve; a cylinder head having a valve chamber accommodating the rotary valve, the rotary valve being arranged to selectively open or close a flow opening in the cylinder head; and an electric motor directly coupled to the rotary valve using a valve drive shaft to impart rotation to the rotary valve, the valve drive shaft including an integral section that extends into a stator of the electric motor, the section including at least one permanent magnet attached thereto. 2. The system according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of rotary valves is provided, each being arranged to selectively open or close a respective one of a plurality of flow openings in the cylinder head. 3. The system according to claim 2, wherein at least one inlet rotary valve is provided in a first valve chamber and at least one outlet rotary valve is provided in a second valve chamber for controlling fluid flow into and out of the at least one cylinder, respectively. 4. The system according to claim 1, wherein at least two rotary valves are mounted to the valve drive shaft coupled to the electric motor. 5. The system according to claim 1, wherein at least two valve drive shafts are provided. 6. The system according to claim 5, wherein inlet and outlet rotary valves are mounted to different valve drive shafts. 7. The system according to claim 6, wherein the valve drive shafts are each coupled to the electric motor. 8. The system according to claim 6, wherein the valve drive shafts are coupled to different electric motor. 9. The system according to claim 1, further including structure for determining the position and movement of a piston reciprocating within the at least one cylinder of the internal combustion engine, and a control unit configured to control operation of the electric motor on the basis of the position and movement of the piston. 10. The system according to claim 9, wherein the structure for determining the position and movement of the piston includes a sensor configured to sense the position and speed of a crankshaft coupled to the piston. 11. The system according to claim 9, wherein the control unit is configured to operate the electric motor such that the rotational speed of the rotary valve is varied between at least two rotational speeds. 12. The system according to claim 9, wherein the control unit is configured to operate the motor such that the rotational speed of the rotary valve is varied to alternate about a reference speed associated with the rotational speed of the crankshaft. 13. The system according to claim 1, wherein the stator of the electric motor is configured to act on the at least one permanent magnet, to induce rotation to the rotary valve. 14. The system according to claim 1, wherein the section of the valve drive shaft that extends into the stator of the electric motor is surrounded by the stator. 15. The system according to claim 14, wherein the at least one permanent magnet is embedded into the valve drive shaft. 16. The system as set forth in claim 1, including passages providing fluid flow to or from a plurality of cylinders of an internal combustion engine. 17. The system as set forth in claim 16, wherein a common cylinder head is provided for at least two cylinders, the common cylinder head including at least two valve chambers associated with different ones of the at least two cylinders, for accommodating the rotary valves therein. 18. The system according to claim 16, wherein at least one valve drive shaft having mounted thereon a plurality of rotary valves, associated with different ones of the plurality of cylinders, is provided. 19. An internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, each reciprocally accommodating a piston therein, the internal combustion engine including a system according to claim 1. 20. A method for controlling fluid flow to or from a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the method comprising: imparting rotation to a rotary valve arranged in a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine by an electric motor coupled to the rotary valve using a valve drive shaft, the valve drive shaft including an integral section that extends into a stator of the electric motor, the section including at least one permanent magnet attached thereto; and selectively opening or closing a flow opening in the cylinder head, which flow opening is associated with the cylinder, by the rotation of the rotary valve. 21. The method according to claim 20, including operating the motor to control the rotation of the rotary valve to achieve subsequent opening and closing events in accordance with operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. 22. The method as set forth in claim 21, including determining the position and movement of a piston reciprocating in the cylinder, and operating the motor in accordance with the determination. 23. The method according to claim 22, including determining a position and speed of a crankshaft coupled to the piston, and operating the motor in accordance with the crankshaft position and speed. 24. The method according to claim 23, including operating the electric motor to alternate the speed of rotation of the rotary valve about a reference speed associated with the speed of rotation of the crankshaft. 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the reference speed is a fraction of the speed of rotation of the crankshaft. 26. The method of claim 20, wherein the section of the valve drive shaft that extends into the stator of the electric motor is surrounded by the stator. 27. The method of claim 20, wherein the at least one permanent magnet is embedded into the valve drive shaft.
