A hybrid wellhead system is assembled using a plurality of threaded unions, such as spanner nuts or hammer unions, for securing respective tubular heads and a flanged connection for securing a flow control stack to a top of a tubing head spool. The tubing head spool is secured by a threaded union to an intermediate head spool. The intermediate head spool is secured by another threaded union to a wellhead. Each tubular head secures and suspends a tubular string in the well bore. The hybrid wellhead system is capable of withstanding higher fluid pressures than a conventional independent screwed wellhead, while providing a more economical alternative to a flanged, or ranged, wellhead system because it is less expensive to construct and faster to assemble.

A hybrid wellhead system, comprising: a first tubular head having a first tubing bowl adapted to support a first tubular string in a well; a second tubular head secured to the first tubular head by a threaded union, the second tubular head having a second tubing bowl that supports a second tubing mandrel adapted to suspend a second tubular string in the well, and the second tubing mandrel extends above a top of the second tubular head; a tubing head spool secured to the second tubular head by a threaded union, the tubing head spool supporting a production tubing mandrel adapted to suspend a production tubing string in the well, the tubing head spool having a flanged top end adapted to support a flow-control stack for controlling the production of hydrocarbons from the well. 2. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the first tubular head is a wellhead, and the second tubular head is an intermediate head spool. 3. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the threaded unions are hammer unions. 4. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 2 wherein the wellhead is threadedly connected to a surface casing, the first tubular string is an intermediate casing string, the second tubing mandrel is a production casing mandrel, and the second tubular string is a production casing string. 5. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 4 wherein the intermediate casing string is supported by an intermediate casing mandrel that comprises a frusta-conical bottom end having outward-facing annular grooves that respectively receive an O-ring that seals against the tubing bowl of the wellhead and a cylindrical top end received in a bottom end of the intermediate head spool. 6. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 5 further comprising an annular seal plate having annular grooves that respectively receive O-rings, the annular seal plate being received between the cylindrical top end of the intermediate casing mandrel and the wellhead. 7. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 6 further comprising a packing nut threadedly connected to the wellhead for locking down the annular seal plate. 8. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the tubing head spool is rated for a working pressure of 10,000-15,000 PSI. 9. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 2 wherein the intermediate head spool is rated for a working pressure of 10,000 PSI. 10. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 2 wherein the wellhead is rated for a working pressure of 3000-5000 PSI. 11. A method of installing a wellhead for stimulating a well for the extraction of hydrocarbons from the well, the method comprising: securing a first tubular head to a surface casing of the well, the first tubular head having a first tubing bowl adapted to suspend a first tubular string in the well; securing a second tubular head to the first tubular head using a threaded union, the second tubular head having a second tubing bowl that supports a second tubing mandrel which extends above a top of the second tubular head and is adapted to suspend a second tubular string in the well; and securing a tubing head spool to the second tubular head using a threaded union, the tubing head spool having a bottom annulus with an outer shoulder that supports a threaded union for connecting the tubing head spool to the second tubular head, the tubing head spool supporting a tubing mandrel adapted to suspend a production tubing string in the well, and the tubing head spool further having a flanged top end adapted to support a flow-control stack for producing hydrocarbons from the well. 12. The method as claimed in claim 11 further comprising landing slips in the first tubing bowl of the first tubular head to suspend the first tubular string; landing an annular seal plate over the slips; and locking down the annular seal plate using a packing nut. 13. The method as claimed in claim 12 further comprising landing a drop sleeve above the packing nut before securing the second tubular head to the first tubular head. 14. The method as claimed in claim 11 further comprising landing a first tubing mandrel in the first tubing bowl to suspend the first tubular string in the well; landing an annular seal plate around the first tubing mandrel; and locking down the annular seal plate using a packing nut. 15. The method as claimed in claim 14 further comprising injecting plastic seals through injection ports in the second tubular head to provide a fluid seal between the top end of the first tubing mandrel and the second tubular head. 16. A hybrid wellhead system for a well, comprising: a wellhead connected to a surface casing of the well; slips adapted to support an intermediate casing string in a casing bowl of the wellhead; an annular seal plate adapted to provide a seal between the intermediate casing string and the wellhead, above the slips; a packing nut that secures the annular seal plate and the slips in the wellhead; an intermediate head spool secured to the wellhead by a threaded union; and a drop sleeve adapted to act as a spacer and a seal between the intermediate head spool and the intermediate casing string above the packing nut. 17. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 16 further comprising a drilling flange adapted to be secured to the wellhead while an intermediate well bore is drilled and further adapted to be connected to the intermediate head spool while a production well bore is drilled, the drilling flange being secured to one of the wellhead or the intermediate head spool using a threaded union having a box thread that engages a pin thread on a top end of a respective one of the wellhead and the intermediate head spool. 18. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 17 further comprising a metal ring gasket seated in aligned annular grooves in the top end of one of the wellhead or the intermediate head spool and a bottom end of the drilling flange to provide a fluid-tight seal between the drilling flange and a respective one of the wellhead and the intermediate head spool when the drilling flange is connected thereto. 19. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 18 further comprising O-rings for providing a second fluid-tight seal between the drilling flange and a respective one of the wellhead and the intermediate head spool. 20. The hybrid wellhead system as claimed in claim 19 wherein the O-rings are received in O-ring grooves in a bottom end of the drilling flange.
