A ceramic support capable of supporting a catalyst comprising a ceramic body having fine pores with a diameter or width up to 1000 times the ion diameter of a catalyst component to be supported on the surface of the ceramic body, the number of the fine pores being not less than 1×1011 pores per liter, is produced by introducing oxygen vacancies or lattice defects in the cordierite crystal lattice or by applying a thermal shock to form fine cracks.

What is claimed is: 1. A catalyst ceramic body comprising: a ceramic support having a multiple number of fine pores having a diameter or width of 0.1 to 100 nm and a catalyst component directly supported within, or at least partially within, the multiple number of fine pores of said ceramic support
What is claimed is: 1. A catalyst ceramic body comprising: a ceramic support having a multiple number of fine pores having a diameter or width of 0.1 to 100 nm and a catalyst component directly supported within, or at least partially within, the multiple number of fine pores of said ceramic support and without a coating on said ceramic support for increasing the specific area of said ceramic support; and the catalyst component comprising a metal in an amount of not less than 0.01% by weight, an average distance between particles of said catalyst component on the surface of said ceramic support being in a range of 0.1 to 100 nm. 2. The catalyst-ceramic body according to claim 1, wherein said catalyst component includes at least one component selected from the group consisting of metals having a catalyst activity and metal oxides having a catalyst activity. 3. The catalyst-ceramic body according to claim 2, wherein said metals having a catalyst activity are noble metals and said metal oxides having a catalyst activity are oxides containing at least one metal selected from the group consisting of V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Go, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Sn, and Pb. 4. A catalyst-ceramic body having a ceramic support comprising a honeycomb structure and a cordierite composition, wherein at least one of Si, Al and Mg elements, constituting the cordierite composition, is replaced by a metal, having a catalyst activity, in an amount of not less than 0.01% by weight thereof; and said honeycomb structure has at least one of oxygen vacancies and lattice defects in the cordierite crystal lattice, on which a catalyst component is supported and without a coating on said ceramic support for increasing the specific area of said ceramic support; and wherein said honeycomb structure has a multiple number of fine cracks having widths of not more than 100 nm. 5. The catalyst-ceramic body according to claim 4, wherein said catalyst-ceramic body contains a metal, having a catalyst activity, in an amount of not less than 0.01% by weight thereof and CeO2 in an amount of not less than 0.01% by weight thereof. 6. The catalyst-ceramic body according to claim 2, wherein said metals having a catalyst activity are noble metals. 7. The catalyst-ceramic body according to claim 4, wherein said metals having a catalyst activity are noble metals. 8. A catalyst-ceramic body having a ceramic support comprising a honeycomb structure and a cordierite composition, wherein at least one of Si, Al and Mg elements, constituting the cordierite composition, is replaced by a metal, having a catalyst activity, in an amount of not less than 0.01% by weight thereof; said honeycomb structure has at least one of oxygen vacancies and lattice defects in the cordierite crystal lattice, on which a catalyst component is supported and without a coating on said ceramic support for increasing the specific area of said ceramic support; wherein said honeycomb structure has a multiple number of fine cracks having widths of not more than 100 nm; and wherein said metal having a catalyst activity includes at least one material selected from the group consisting of noble metals, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Sn, and Pb.
