This invention relates to a formulation with the addition of low density additives of volcanic ash, hollow ceramic microspheres or a combination of microspheres and volcanic ash or other low density additives into cementitious cellulose fiber reinforced building materials. This formulation is advantageously lightweight or low density compared as compared to current fiber cement products without the increased moisture expansion and freeze-thaw degradation usually associated with the addition of lightweight inorganic materials to fiber cement mixes. The low density additives also give the material improved thermal dimensional stability.
What is claimed is: 1. A building material comprising: a hydraulic binder at about 5to 80 wt. %; a siliceous matter up to 80 wt. %; cellulose fibers, wherein the cellulose fibers comprise about 4 wt. % 15 wt. %; and hollow ceramic microspheres, wherein the hollow ceramic microspheres comprise abou
What is claimed is: 1. A building material comprising: a hydraulic binder at about 5to 80 wt. %; a siliceous matter up to 80 wt. %; cellulose fibers, wherein the cellulose fibers comprise about 4 wt. % 15 wt. %; and hollow ceramic microspheres, wherein the hollow ceramic microspheres comprise about 5 wt. % to 90 wt. %, wherein density of the building material is about 1.2 g/cm3 or less and wherein moisture expansion of the building material is at a level of between about 0.13%-0.2%. 2. The building material of claim 1 further comprising up to about 10 wt. % additives. 3. The building material of claim 2, wherein the additives are selected from the group consisting of silica fume, geothermal silica, fire retardant, thickeners, pigments, colorants, plasticisers, proofing agents, organic density modifiers, aluminum powder, kaolin, alumni trihydrate, mica, metakaolin, calcium carbonate, wolllastonite, polymeric resin emulsions, and mixtures thereof. 4. The building material of claim 1, wherein the hydraulic binder is about 20 to 30 wt. %. 5. The building material of claim 1, wherein density of the building material is reduced by more than about 15% as compared to a building product made from an equivalent formulation without microspheres. 6. The building material of claim 1, wherein moisture expansion of the building material is reduced by more than about 5% as compared to a building product made from an equivalent formulation without microspheres. 7. A building material comprising: a hydraulic binder; a silica source; cellulose fibers, wherein the cellulose fibers comprise greater than about 4% by weight; and hollow ceramic microspheres, wherein the hollow ceramic microspheres are incorporated in a quantity sufficient to lower the density of the building material to about 1.2 g/cm3 or less, and wherein the hollow ceramic microspheres maintain the moisture expansion of the building material at a level of between about 0.13%-0.2%. 8. The building material of claim 7, wherein the hydraulic binder is Portland cement. 9. The building material of claim 7, wherein the microspheres include cenospheres. 10. The building material of claim 7, wherein the microspheres are a by-product of coal combustion. 11. The building material of claim 7, wherein the cellulose fibers comprise up to about 15% by weight. 12. The building material of claim 7, wherein the hydraulic binder is about 5 to 80 wt. %. 13. The building material of claim 7, wherein the silica source is up to 80 wt. %.
