A process of forming a microperforated plastic film includes providing a post tool having multiple posts, bringing plastic into contact with the post tool such that the plastic conforms to the shape of the posts, and solidifying the plastic into a solidified plastic film having a plurality of microperforations in the shape of the posts. Another step in the process is displacing any skins formed over the holes after solidifying the plastic. The process may be used to form a film for sound absorption where the posts are shaped and arranged to provide microperforations that provide a particular sound absorption spectrum. In one embodiment, the microperforations each have a narrowest diameter of 20 mils, a narrowest diameter less than a film thickness, and a widest diameter greater than narrowest diameter. The widest diameter may be about 125% or more of the narrowest diameter in an embodiment.

What is claimed is: 1. A process of forming a microperforated plastic film having a thickness, comprising: providing a tool having multiple tapered posts, each post having a tapered shape; bringing molten extrudate into contact with the tool so that the molten extrudate conforms to the tapered shape of each tapered post; solidifying the molten extrudate into a solidified microperforated plastic film having a plurality of tapered microperforations, each tapered microperforation having a tapered shape imparted by a tapered post and each tapered microperforation having a narrowest diameter of 20 mils or less and less than the film thickness and a widest diameter greater than the narrowest diameter wherein the widest diameter is about 125% or more of the narrowest diameter; and displacing any skins formed over each tapered microperforation after solidifying the molten extrudate, so that each tapered microperforation has a length corresponding to the thickness of the solidified microperforated plastic film. 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the tapered microperforations each include a lip defining the narrowest diameter, wherein the thickness of the lip is about 1 mil or more. 3. The process of claim 1, wherein the tapered microperforations have a density of about 100 to 4000 microperforations /square inch. 4. The process of claim 1, wherein the narrowest diameter is about 50% or less of the film thickness. 5. The process of claim 1, wherein the widest diameter is about 200% to 300% of the narrowest diameter. 6. The process of claim 1, wherein the molten extrudate is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and blends or copolymers thereof. 7. The process of claim 1, wherein the displacing of the skins comprises flame treatment of the solidified plastic film. 8. The process of claim 1, wherein the solidified plastic film is from 5 to 20 mils in thickness. 9. The process of claim 1, wherein the solidified plastic film is from 10 to 20 mils in thickness. 10. The process of claim 1, wherein the tapered microperforations have a narrowest diameter of from 10 mils to 4 mils. 11. A process of forming a microperforated plastic film having first and second sides and a thickness, comprising: providing a tool having multiple tapered posts, each post having a tapered shape; bringing molten extrudate into contact with the tool so that the molten extrudate conforms to the tapered shape of each tapered post; solidifying the molten extrudate into a solidified microperforated plastic film having a plurality of tapered microperforations, each tapered microperforation having a tapered shape imparted by a tapered post and each tapered microperforations having a narrowest diameter of 20 mils or less and less than the film thickness and a widest diameter greater than the narrowest diameter wherein the widest diameter is about 125% or more of the narrowest diameter; and, displacing any skins formed over each tapered microperforation after solidifying the molten extrudate, by applying a flame treatment to the first side of the solidified microperforated plastic film while a metal roll is provided against the second side of the solidified microperforated plastic film, so that each tapered microperforation has a length corresponding to the thickness of the solidified microperforated plastic film. 12. The process of claim 11, wherein the solidified microperforated plastic film comprises a first side bearing the skins and a second side opposite the side bearing the skins, and wherein the flame treatment is applied to the first side of the film bearing the skins and the metal roll is provided against the second side opposite the side bearing the skins. 13. The process of claim 11, wherein the tapered microperforations each include a lip defining the narrowest diameter, wherein the thickness of the lip is about 1 mil or more. 14. The process of claim 11, wherein the tapered microperforations have a density of about 100 to 4000 microperforations /square inch. 15. The process of claim 11, wherein the narrowest diameter is about 50% or less of the film thickness. 16. The process of claim 11, wherein the widest diameter is about 200% to 300% of the narrowest diameter. 17. The process of claim 11, wherein the solidified microperforated plastic film is from 5 to 20 mils in thickness. 18. The process of claim 11, wherein the solidified microperforated plastic film is from 10 to 20 mils in thickness. 19. The process of claim 11, wherein the tapered microperforations have a narrowest diameter of from 10 mils to 4 mils. 20. The process of claim 11, wherein no porous material is present that is bonded to the solidified microperforated plastic film.
