An automatic system facilitates selection of media properties on which to display an advertisement, responsive to a profile collected on a first media property, where a behavioral-targeting company calculates expected profit for an ad correlated with the profile and arranges for the visitor to be tagged with a tag readable by the selected media property. The profit can be calculated by deducting, from the revenues that are expected to be generated from an ad delivered based on the collected profile, at least the price of ad space at a media property where the BT company might like to deliver ads to the profiled visitor. When the calculated profit is positive (i.e., not a loss), the BT company arranges for the visitor to be tagged with a tag readable by the selected media property through which the BT company expects to profit.

A method of directing electronic advertisements using one or more computers, the method comprising: (a) determining automatically, with at least one of the computers, a profile-attribute-dependent revenue available for display of a profile-attribute-related advertisement; and (b) for each of a multitude of different electronic visitors to a first media property, responsive to receiving information about at least one of a plurality of profile attributes possibly applicable to the visitor, automatically electronically authorizing, with at least one of the computers, a third-party second media property to allow display, to the electronic visitor when later visiting the second media property, of an advertisement correlated with the profile-attribute information received about the visitor, for a price that does not exceed a price cap that is a selected amount less than the revenue available for display of the advertisement. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein part (a) is done before part (b). 3. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing for a price that does not exceed a price cap comprises ensuring that (i) the revenue advertisement is not less than (ii) a sum of the price for allowing display of the advertisement to the electronic visitor when later visiting the second media property and an amount that depends on cost or desired profit. 4. The method of claim 3: (i) wherein part (a) is done before part (b); (ii) further comprising building a look-up data structure associating at least one selected of a plurality of possible profile attributes with at least one selected of a plurality of second media properties; and (iii) wherein part (b) comprises, responsive to receiving an electronic redirect of a visitor computer accompanied by profile-attribute information about the visitor, authorizing said at least one selected second media property on the lookup data structure associated with the profile-attribute information received about the visitor, only during a specified time period after receiving profile-attribute information about the visitor, by arranging for placement of a tag readable by said at least one selected second media property. 5. The method of claim 3 wherein authorizing for a price that does not exceed a price cap comprises calculating the selected amount and wherein calculating the selected amount is done responsive to receiving the profile-attribute information about the visitor. 6. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving profile-attribute information comprises authorizing responsive to receiving a search request by the visitor to the first media property. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving profile-attribute information comprises authorizing responsive to receiving information about a characteristic of the visitor. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the second media property comprises equipment controlling ad space only temporarily. 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising, in the course of authorizing for a price that does not exceed a price cap, translating the revenue determined in part (a) in accordance with a first payment method to a second, different payment method utilized by the second media property. 10. The method of claim 1 further comprising automatically selecting, with at least one of the computers, at least one of a plurality of second media properties for the authorizing step in part (b). 11. The method of claim 1 further comprising building, with at least one of the computers, a look-up data structure associating at least one selected of a plurality of possible profile attributes with at least one selected of a plurality of second media properties, wherein part (a) is done before part (b), and wherein part (b) comprises automatically authorizing, with at least one of the computers, those selected second media properties on the lookup data structure associated with the profile-attribute information received about the visitor. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving information comprises automatically authorizing responsive to receiving, with at least one of the computers, an electronic redirect of a visitor computer accompanied by profile-attribute information about the visitor. 13. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving information comprises automatically recognizing, with at least one of the computers, an action conducted on the first media property by the visitor. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving profile-attribute information comprises automatically authorizing, with at least one of the computers, responsive to receiving information about a profile attribute of the visitor and automatically categorizing, with at least one of the computers, the profile attribute within at least one of a plurality of predefined categories. 15. the method of claim 1 wherein authorizing comprises delivering the price cap to a second media property that controls ad space on a plurality of different media properties, with understanding that second media property will allow placement of the advertisement only into ad space having a price that does not exceed the price cap. 16. The method of claim 15 wherein authorizing comprises locating previously determined information concerning the profile-attribute-dependent revenue available for display of the advertisement. 17. The method of claim 16 wherein: (i) part (a) is done before part (b), (ii) part (b) comprises, responsive to receiving an electronic redirect of a visitor computer accompanied by profile-attribute information about the visitor, authorizing display of the advertisement by arranging for placement of a tag readable by the second media property, and (iii) authorizing comprises authorizing display of the advertisement only during a specified time period after receiving profile-attribute information about the visitor. 18. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing comprises automatically redirecting, with at least one of the computers, the visitor's computer to the second media property for the second media property to place a tag on the visitor's computer readable by the second media property. 19. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing comprises automatically placing, with at least one of the computers, a tag on the visitor's computer readable by the second media property. 20. The method of claim 1 wherein authorizing comprises automatically authorizing, with at least one of the computers, display of the advertisement only during a specified time period after receiving profile-attribute information about the visitor. 21. The method of claim 1 wherein the second media property comprises equipment controlling ad space at different Internet sites. 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the second media property comprises equipment controlling ad space on Internet sites not owned by the second media property. 23. The method of claim 1 wherein the second media property comprises media-property equipment controlling ad space that is in a different medium than the medium of the first media property. 24. A tangible computer server device programmed to implement a method of directing electronic advertisements comprising: (a) determining a profile-attribute-dependent revenue available for display of a profile-attribute-related advertisement; and (b) for each of a multitude of different electronic visitors to a first media property, responsive to receiving information about at least one of a plurality of profile attributes possibly applicable to the visitor, automatically electronically authorizing a third party second media property to allow display, to the electronic visitor when visiting the second media property, of an advertisement correlated with the profile-attribute information received about the visitor, for a price that does not exceed a price cap that is a selected amount less than the revenue available for display of the advertisement. 25. The server of claim 24 wherein the server is programmed to implement a method wherein authorizing for a price that does not exceed a price cap comprises ensuring that (i) the revenue available for display of the advertisement is not less than (ii) a sum of the price for allowing display of the advertisement to the electronic visitor when later visiting the second media property and an amount that depends on cost or desired profit. 26. The server of claim 25 wherein the server is programmed to implement a method: (i) wherein part (a) is done before part (b); (ii) further comprising building a look-up data structure associating at least one selected of a plurality of possible profile attributes with at least one selected of a plurality of second media properties; and (iii) wherein part (b) comprises, responsive to receiving an electronic redirect of a visitor computer accompanied by profile-attribute information about the visitor, authorizing said at least one selected second media property on the lookup data structure associated with the profile-attribute information received about the visitor, only during a specified time period after receiving profile-attribute information about the visitor, by arranging for placement of a tag readable by said at least one selected second media property. 27. The server of claim 24 wherein the server is programmed to implement a method wherein part (a) is done before part (b). 28. The server of claim 24 wherein the server is programmed to implement a method wherein authorizing responsive to receiving information comprises authorizing responsive to receiving an electronic redirect of a visitor computer accompanied by profile-attribute information about the visitor. 30. The server of claim 24 wherein the server is programmed to implement a method wherein authorizing responsive to receiving profile-attribute information comprises authorizing responsive to receiving information about a profile attribute of the visitor and categorizing the profile attribute within at least one of a plurality of predefined categories. 31. The server of claim 24 wherein the server is programmed to implement a method wherein authorizing comprises delivering the price cap to a second media property that controls ad space on a plurality of different media properties, with understanding that second media property will allow placement of the advertisement only into ad space having a price that does not exceed the price cap. 32. The server of claim 24 wherein the server is programmed to implement a method further comprising, in the course of authorizing for a price that does not exceed a price cap, translating the revenue determined in part (a) in accordance with a first payment method to a second, different payment method utilized by the second media property. 37. A system comprising one or more computers programmed to implement a method of directing electronic advertisements comprising: (a) determining automatically, with at least one of the computers, a profile-attribute-dependent revenue available for display of a profile-attribute-related advertisement; and (b) for each of a multitude of different electronic visitors to a first media property responsive to receiving information about at least one of a plurality of profile attributes possibly applicable to the visitor, automatically electronically authorizing, with at least one of the computers, a third party second media property to allow display, to the electronic visitor when visiting the second media property, of an advertisement correlated with the profile-attribute information received about the visitor, for a price that does not exceed a price cap that is a selected amount less than the revenue available for display of the advertisement. 38. The system of claim 37 wherein the method further comprises automatically selecting, with at least one of the computers, at least one of a plurality of second media properties for the authorizing step in part (b). 39. The system of claim 37 wherein the method further comprises building, with at least one of the computers, a look-up data structure associating at least one selected of a plurality of possible profile attributes with at least one selected of a plurality of second media properties, wherein part (a) is done before part (b), and wherein part (b) comprises automatically authorizing, with at least one of the computers, those selected second media properties on the lookup data structure associated with the profile-attribute information received about the visitor. 40. The system of claim 37 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving information comprises automatically authorizing responsive to receiving, with at least one of the computers, an electronic redirect of a visitor computer accompanied by profile-attribute information about the visitor. 41. The system of claim 37 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving information comprises automatically recognizing, with at least one of the computers, an action conducted on the first media property by the visitor. 42. The system of claim 37 wherein authorizing responsive to receiving profile-attribute information comprises automatically authorizing, with at least one of the computers, responsive to receiving information about a profile attribute of the visitor and automatically categorizing, with at least one of the computers, the profile attribute within at least one of a plurality of predefined categories. 43. The system of claim 37 wherein authorizing comprises automatically redirecting, with at least one of the computers, the visitor's computer to the second media property for the second media property to place a tag on the visitor's computer readable by the second media property. 44.
