A device, system and method for improving delivery of hemostatic material, in which the device includes a vent cap body capable of removably engaging a cannula. The vent cap has a passage extending through the vent cap body from the cannula to an exterior of the vent cap body where a restricter for restricting the flow of fluid from the cannula to the exterior. In one embodiment, the vent cap has a valve which has an opened and closed position. In the closed position, the valve is designed to provide a back pressure or resistance. When a certain force is applied against the valve, the valve moves from the closed position to the opened position, where a gas or fluid may pass through the vent cap. The vent cap is designed to help maintain the continuity of the hemostatic material during delivery of the material from the adaptor to the trial staging chamber.

What is claimed is: 1. An adaptor for preparing and hydrating a hemostasis-promoting sponge for delivery to a cannula, the adaptor comprising: a hemostasis-promoting sponge; an elongated member having a first end, a second end, and a lumen extending from the first end to the second end and sized to receive the hemostasis-promoting sponge, wherein the elongated member first and second ends are unobstructed to allow the hemostasis-promoting sponge to enter into and exit the lumen, respectively; a connector provided at the first end of the elongated member for connection to a syringe to deliver hydrating fluid to the lumen of the elongated member; a fitting provided at the second end for connection to the cannula, the fitting including a retaining ring; a tapered section of the lumen tapering from a first diameter at the first end to a second diameter at the second end which is smaller than the first diameter; and a vent passage, separate from the lumen, extending through the second end of the elongated member and fluidly communicating between the lumen and an exterior of the elongated member, the vent passage including a restricting portion sized to allow hydrating fluid to be vented out of the lumen through the vent passage while substantially preventing the hemostasis-promoting sponge from passing out of the lumen through the vent passage. 2. The adaptor of claim 1, wherein the vent passage comprises at least one hole adjacent the second end of the elongated member. 3. The adaptor of claim 1, wherein the vent passage comprises at least one vent hole in a side wall of the elongated member. 4. The adaptor of claim 1, wherein the vent passage comprises a plurality of vent holes in a side wall of the elongated member. 5. The adaptor system of claim 1, wherein the vent passage restricting portion has a diameter of about 0.005 to about 0.02 inches. 6. The adaptor system of claim 1, wherein the vent passage restricting portion is sized to prevent the sponge from passing through the vent passage at internal adaptor pressures of at least 5 psi. 7. An adaptor system for delivering a hemostasis-promoting sponge to a cannula for delivery to tissue, the system comprising: a hemostasis-promoting sponge; an adaptor comprising: an elongated member having a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end and sized to receive the sponge, wherein the elongated member distal and proximal ends are unobstructed to allow the sponge to enter into and exit the lumen, respectively; a fitting provided at the distal end for connection to the cannula, the fitting including a retaining ring; and a tapered section of the lumen tapering from a first diameter at the proximal end to a second diameter at the distal end which is smaller than the first diameter; and a removable vent cap configured to engage the distal end of the elongated member, the vent cap having a vent passage communicating between the lumen and an exterior of the vent cap, the vent passage including a restricting portion sized to allow hydrating fluid to be vented out of the lumen through the vent passage while substantially preventing the sponge from passing through the vent passage. 8. The adaptor system of claim 7, wherein the vent cap includes an extension sized for insertion into the lumen at a distal end of the elongated adaptor to position a distal end of the sponge at a predetermined longitudinal position with respect to the adaptor distal end. 9. An adaptor system for delivering a hemostasis-promoting sponge to a cannula for delivery to tissue, the system comprising: a hemostasis-promoting sponge; an adaptor comprising: an elongated member having a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end and sized to receive the sponge, wherein the elongated member distal and proximal ends are unobstructed to allow the sponge to enter into and exit the lumen, respectively; a fitting provided at the distal end for connection to the cannula, the fitting including a retaining ring; and a tapered section of the lumen tapering from a first diameter at the proximal end to a second diameter at the distal end which is smaller than the first diameter; and a removable vent cap configured to engage the distal end of the elongated member, the vent cap having a vent passage communicating between the lumen and an exterior of the vent cap, and a valve body positionable within the vent passage and configured to allow fluid flow in a first direction from the lumen to the vent cap exterior while preventing fluid flow in a second, opposite direction from the vent cap exterior to the lumen. 10. The adaptor system of claim 9, wherein the removable vent cap includes an extension sized for insertion into the lumen at a distal end of the elongated adaptor to position a distal end of the sponge at a predetermined longitudinal position with respect to the adaptor distal end. 11. The adaptor system of claim 10, wherein the predetermined longitudinal position is proximal of the distal end of the adaptor. 12. The adaptor system of claim 9, further comprising a connector at the proximal end of the elongated adaptor configured to receive a syringe for delivery of hydrating fluid to the elongated adaptor. 13. The adaptor system of claim 9, further comprising a luer connector for connecting the removable vent cap to the distal end of the elongated adaptor.
