A medical tool comprising an electromechanical driver and a surgical instrument attachment for use in invasive surgery, including a handle coupled to a flexible sheath which is in turn coupled to a surgical attachment. The handle of the driver includes the electromechanical driver and at least one processor element which controls the actions of the electromechanical driver, and therefore the application elements of the surgical attachment, based on information relayed between the processor element and remotely activatable sensor assemblies in the surgical instrument attachment.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical system comprising: a torque generating element; a torque translating member that is coupleable at a first end to the torque generating element; and a surgical attachment including at least one selectively moveable element that is coupleable to a second end of the torque translating member and that is selectively moveable by the torque generating member via the torque translating member, the surgical attachment further including a sensor mechanism configured to sense and provide data corresponding to at least one feature of an environment surrounding the surgical attachment, wherein an amount of torque generated by the torque generating element corresponds to the data. 2. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, wherein the surgical attachment includes a stapling instrument. 3. The surgical system as set forth in claim 2, wherein the stapling instrument comprises: a first jaw; a second jaw coupled to the first jaw, wherein the at least one selectively moveable element includes at least one of the first and second jaws. 4. The surgical system as set forth in claim 3, wherein the first and second jaws are moveable relative to each other so as to staple a section of tissue disposed between the first and second jaws. 5. The surgical system as set forth in claim 4, wherein the sensor mechanism is configured to sense and provide data corresponding to a condition of the section of tissue when the section of tissue is disposed between the first and second jaws. 6. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sensor includes a pulse oximeter. 7. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sensor includes a tissue proximity detector. 8. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a display device configured to provide a display that corresponds to the data. 9. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sensor is selectively activatable. 10. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, wherein the torque translating member includes a rotatable drive shaft housed within a flexible shaft. 11. The surgical system as set forth in claim 10, wherein the flexible shaft is coupleable at a first end to an electromechanical driver element, the torque generating element housed within the driver element. 12. The surgical system as set forth in claim 10, wherein, when the flexible shaft is coupled at its first end to the driver element, the first end of the torque translating member is caused to be coupled to the torque generating element. 13. The surgical system as set forth in claim 12, wherein the flexible shaft is coupleable at a second end to a terminal of the surgical attachment. 14. The surgical system as set forth in claim 13, wherein, when the flexible shaft is coupled at its second end to the terminal of the surgical attachment, the second end of the torque translating member is caused to be coupled to the at least one selectively moveable element. 15. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a memory unit configured to store identification information of the surgical attachment. 16. The surgical system as set forth in claim 15, wherein the identification information includes at least one of size, diameter, shape, length, and stapling arrangement of the surgical attachment. 17. The surgical system as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a memory unit configured to store status information of the surgical attachment. 18. The surgical system as set forth in claim 17, wherein the status information includes at least one of functionality and usage history of the surgical attachment. 19. A surgical system comprising: a torque generating element; a torque translating member that is coupleable at a first end to the torque generating element; and a surgical attachment including at least one selectively moveable element that is coupleable to a second end of the torque translating member and that is selectively moveable by the torque generating member via the torque translating member, the surgical attachment further including a sensor mechanism configured to sense and provide data corresponding to at least one feature of an environment surrounding the surgical attachment, wherein the sensor is selectively activatable and includes one of a pulse oximeter and a tissue proximity detector. 20. The surgical system as set forth in claim 19, wherein the surgical attachment includes a stapling instrument. 21. The surgical system as set forth in claim 20, wherein the stapling instrument comprises: a first jaw; a second jaw coupled to the first jaw, wherein the at least one selectively moveable element includes at least one of the first and second jaws. 22. The surgical system as set forth in claim 21, wherein the first and second jaws are moveable relative to each other so as to staple a section of tissue disposed between the first and second jaws. 23. The surgical system as set forth in claim 22, wherein the sensor mechanism is configured to sense and provide data corresponding to a condition of the section of tissue when the section of tissue is disposed between the first and second jaws. 24. The surgical system as set forth in claim 19, wherein an amount of torque generated by the torque generating element corresponds to the data. 25. The surgical system as set forth in claim 19, further comprising a display device configured to provide a display that corresponds to the data. 26. The surgical system as set forth in claim 19, wherein the torque translating member is a rotatable drive shaft housed within a flexible shaft. 27.
