A cartridge holder (30) for an automated endoscope reprocessor (10) is mounted on a movable rack (14). As the rack is wheeled into the chamber, a connector (164) on the cartridge holder (164) automatically makes a fluid connection with a connection port (158) within the chamber. The cartridge holder includes a base (42) and a lid (44), which is pivotally connected to the base by a hinge (110). A cartridge (40) holding a dose of a disinfectant concentrate or reagents is positioned in a well (50) defined by the base and the lid closed. Water flows through the cartridge holder via a fluid passageway (A) defined in part by the lid and in part by the hinge. The water mixes with the concentrate or reagents and the resulting disinfectant solution passes out of a lower end (205) of the cartridge into the well. The solution flows upwardly, around the cartridge, through an annular space (232) between the cartridge and the well, disinfecting the well in the process. The solution exits the cartridge through a plurality of bores (80) at an upper end of the base.

Having thus described the preferred embodiment, the invention is now claimed to be: 1. A method of disinfection comprising: placing a cartridge in a well defined by a base through an opening in the well, the cartridge having a side wall and upper and lower ends which selectively hold within the cartridge a disinfectant concentrate or reagents which react in a liquid to form a disinfectant solution; closing the opening in the well with a lid; supplying the liquid to the well; flowing the liquid into the cartridge through the upper end such that the liquid mixes with the concentrate or reagents to form the disinfectant solution; flowing the disinfectant solution out of the cartridge into the well through the lower end of the cartridge; flowing the disinfectant solution through a space between the cartridge side wall and the well to disinfect the well; flowing the disinfectant solution out of the well through bores in the base adjacent an upper end of the well; and contacting items to be disinfected with the disinfectant solution. 2. A method of disinfecting comprising: suspending a cartridge in a well such that a passage is defined around a base and sides of the cartridge, the cartridge holding a disinfectant concentrate or reagents which react with a liquid to form a disinfectant solution; flowing liquid into the cartridge; mixing liquid with the concentrate or reagents to form the disinfectant solution; flowing the disinfectant solution from the cartridge into and filling the passage defined between the cartridge and the well to disinfect the well; and, discharging the disinfectant solution from the well. 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the disinfectant solution is discharged from the well to a disinfection chamber and further including: contacting items disinfection chamber with the disinfectant solution. 4. The method according to claim 2, further including: discharging a first portion of the disinfectant solution from adjacent a top of the well; and, discharging a second portion of the disinfectant solution from a lower portion of the well. 5. The method according to claim 2, further including suspending the cartridge in the well in order to define the passage between the cartridge and the well, the passage being defined below and along the sides of the cartridge. 6. The method according to claim 2, further including: after a single disinfection cycle, removing the cartridge from the well. 7. The method according to claim 6, further including: in preparation for another disinfection cycle, placing a new cartridge in the well. 8. The method according to claim 2, further including: supplying fluid through a top of the cartridge; continuing to supply the disinfectant solution fluid until disinfection solution fills the passage between the cartridge and the well; discharging disinfectant solution from adjacent an upper end of the well until the well is disinfected; after the well is disinfected, discharging sterilant solution from a lower end of the well. 9. The method according to claim 2, further including: collecting disinfectant solution discharged from the well in the sump of a washing and disinfecting chamber; circulating the disinfectant solution from the sump to spray nozzles to wash and disinfect one or more items in the washing and disinfecting chamber. 10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the items include an endoscope, the method further including: circulating the disinfectant solution from the sump through internal passages of the endoscope. 11. The method according to claim 2, wherein the well is mounted on a rack disposed in a disinfection chamber, the method further including: placing an item to be disinfected on the rack; after suspending the cartridge in the well and placing the item on the rack, closing the disinfection chamber; and, using the disinfection solution from the well to disinfect the item on the rack. 12. The method according to claim 11, further including: after suspending the cartridge in the well, closing a lid to the well; the step of flowing liquid into the cartridge includes flowing liquid through the lid into a top of the cartridge; discharging the disinfectant solution from the well includes discharging the disinfectant solution between the lid and the well. 13. A method of disinfecting comprising: suspending a cartridge holding disinfectant concentration or reagents which react to form a disinfectant solution in a well such that a passage is defined below the cartridge and between side walls of the cartridge and the well; supplying fluid through a top of the cartridge holding disinfectant concentrate or reagents which react to form a disinfectant solution; supplying the disinfectant fluid into the passage until disinfection solution fills the passage below the cartridge and between the cartridge side walls and the well; discharging disinfectant solution from adjacent an upper end of the well until the well is disinfected; after the well is disinfected, discharging disinfectant solution from a lower end of the well. 14. The method according to claim 13, further including: discharging the disinfectant solution from the upper end of the well into a disinfection chamber; and, contacting items in the disinfection chamber with the disinfection solution. 15. The method according to claim 13, further including: after a single disinfection cycle, removing the cartridge from the well and discarding the cartridge. 16. The method according to claim 15, further including: prior to a subsequent disinfection cycle, placing a new cartridge in the well. 17. The method according to claim 13, further including: collecting disinfectant solution discharged from the well in the sump of a washing and disinfecting chamber; circulating the disinfectant solution from the sump to spray nozzles to wash one or more items in the washing and disinfecting chamber. 18. The method according to claim 13, wherein the items include an endoscope, the method further including: circulating the disinfectant solution from the sump through internal passages of the endoscope, 19. The method according to claim 13, wherein the well is mounted on a rack disposed in a disinfection chamber, the method further including: placing an item to be disinfected on the rack; after suspending the cartridge in the well and placing the item on the rack, closing the disinfection chamber; and, using the disinfection solution from the well to disinfect the item on the rack. 20. The method according to claim 13, further including: after suspending the cartridge in the well, closing a lid to the well; the step of flowing liquid into the cartridge includes flowing liquid through the lid into a top of the cartridge; discharging the disinfectant solution from the well includes discharging the disinfectant solution between the lid and the well.
