The background task is always active and functions to respond to an incoming call even if the user is in a graphical user interface window that requires some input from the user (e.g. the graphical user interface is blocked).

In an integrated portable electronic device having an operating system chipset, a telephony chipset, and a display, a method for automatically delivering a phone call, the method comprising the steps of: monitoring for incoming phone calls by a background task executing on an operating system chipset and interfacing directly with a telephony functionality executing on a telephony chipset integrated within a portable electronic device, the device's operating system including at least one graphical user interface; detecting an incoming phone call by the background task; and notifying the operating system of the incoming phone call by the background task, wherein the notification is irrespective of a user's activity on the device and wherein the at least one graphical user interface is one of (i) waiting for input from the user, (ii) waiting for input from the user and is unable to be notified and updated by the operating system, and (iii) able to be notified and updated by the operating system. 2. The method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of: displaying caller identification information when the at least one graphical user interface is one of (i) waiting for input from the user; and (iii) able to be notified and updated by the operating system. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the portable electronic device is a cellular phone. 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the portable electronic device is a portable computer system. 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the portable computer system is a palmtop computer. 6. The method according to claim 4, wherein the portable computer system is a laptop computer. 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein the portable electronic device is a television system. 8. The method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of: updating the graphical user interface when the graphical user interface can be updated with an image that includes an image of a cell phone keypad and digitry. 9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the graphical user interface offers an answering option to the user. 10. The method according to claim 9, wherein the answering option comprises an option to transfer incoming phone call to a different electronic device. 11. The method according to claim 1, wherein the incoming phone call includes video information. 12. The method according to claim 11, wherein the graphical user interface displays the video information. 13. In an integrated portable electronic device having an operating system chipset, a telephony chipset, and a display, a method for automatically delivering a phone call, the method comprising the steps of: monitoring for incoming phone calls by a background task executing on an operating system chipset and interfacing directly with a telephony functionality executing on a telephony chipset integrated within a portable electronic device, the device's operating system including at least one graphical user interface; detecting an incoming phone call by the background task; notifying the operating system of the incoming phone call by the background task, wherein the notification is irrespective of a user's activity on the device; and displaying on the graphical user interface discrete areas for the user to provide input via the graphical user interface, wherein the input is provided to the operating system. 14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the portable electronic device is a cellular phone. 15. The method according to claim 13, wherein the portable electronic device is a portable computer system. 16. The method according to claim 15, wherein the portable computer system is a palmtop computer. 17. The method according to claim 15, wherein the portable computer system is a laptop computer. 18. The method according to claim 13, wherein the portable electronic device is a television system. 19. The method according to claim 13, wherein the discrete areas include an answering option to the user. 20. The method according to claim 19, wherein the answering option comprises an option to transfer incoming phone call to a different electronic device. 21. The method according to claim 13, wherein the incoming phone call includes video information. 22. The method according to claim 21, wherein the graphical user interface displays the video information. 23. The method according to claim 13, wherein the at least one graphical user interface is one of (i) waiting for input from the user, (ii) waiting for input from the user and is unable to be notified and updated by the operating system, and (iii) able to be notified and updated by the operating system. 24. The method according to claim 13, wherein the at least one graphical user interface is one of (i) waiting for input from the user, (ii) waiting for input from the user and is unable to be notified and updated by the operating system, and (iii) able to be notified and updated by the operating system. 25. In an integrated portable electronic device having an operating system chipset, a telephony chipset, and a display, a method for automatically delivering a phone call, the method comprising the steps of: monitoring for incoming phone calls by a background task executing on an operating system chipset and interfacing directly with a telephony functionality executing on a telephony chipset integrated within a portable device, the device's operating system including at least one graphical user interface; detecting an incoming phone call by the background task; and notifying the operating system of the incoming phone call by the background task, wherein the notification is irrespective of a user's activity on the device; and displaying on the at least one graphical user interface one of: (i) a message that the incoming phone call has been answered, and (ii) the duration of the incoming phone call. 26. The method according to claim 25, wherein the portable electronic device is a cellular phone. 27. The method according to claim 25, wherein the portable electronic device is a portable computer system. 28. The method according to claim 27, wherein the portable computer system is a palmtop computer. 29. The method according to claim 27, wherein the portable computer system is a laptop computer. 30. The method according to claim 25, wherein the portable electronic device is a television system. 31. The method according to claim 25, wherein the displaying step further comprises displaying an answering option comprising an option to transfer the incoming phone call to a different electronic device. 32. The method according to claim 25, wherein the incoming phone call includes video information. 33. The method according to claim 32, wherein the graphical user interface displays the video information.
