The selector circuit is responsive to an output signal from an associated power management unit. The selector circuit is further configured to permit parallel operation of two or more of the batteries. The selector circuit may further act to independently verify power conditions and override instructions from the PMU in certain instances to enhance power supply safety and battery life such as by preventing inter battery current flow from a higher potential battery to a lower potential battery coupled in parallel.

A power supply system comprising: a plurality of paths, each of said plurality of paths configured to be coupled to a unique one of a plurality of batteries and to a common node, each of said plurality of paths comprising a first switch and a second switch coupled in series a

What is claimed is: 1. A power supply system comprising: a plurality of paths, each of said plurality of paths configured to be coupled to a unique one of a plurality of batteries and to a common node, each of said plurality of paths comprising a first switch and a second switch coupled in series and configured to allow selective coupling of said unique one of said plurality of batteries to said common node; and a selector circuit configured to selectively close said first and said second switches to couple said plurality of batteries in parallel to said common node based on, at least in part, a current level flowing through each one of said plurality of paths compared to a threshold corresponding to each one of said plurality of batteries. 2. The system of claim 1, wherein each current level is representative of a discharge current from a respective one of said plurality of batteries. 3. The system of claim 2, wherein each of said plurality of paths further comprises a first diode in parallel with said first switch, and a second diode in parallel with said second switch, wherein said first and said second diodes are in reverse bias with each other, and wherein said selector circuit is further configured to open said first switch and close said second switch associated with any one of said plurality of paths if said discharge current associated with said any one of said plurality of paths is less than said threshold level associated with said batteries coupled to said any one of said plurality of paths to prevent cross conduction from said battery associated with said any one of said plurality of paths with another one of said plurality of batteries. 4. The system of claim 2, wherein each current level is representative of a charge current from a respective one of said plurality of batteries. 5. The system of claim 4, wherein each of said plurality of paths comprises a first diode in parallel with said first switch, and a second diode in parallel with said second switch, wherein said first and said second diodes are in reverse bias with each other, and wherein said selector circuit is further configured to open said second switch and close said first switch on any one of said plurality of paths if said charge current on said any one of said plurality of paths is less than said threshold level associated with said battery coupled to said any one of said plurality of paths to prevent cross conduction from said battery associated with said any one of said plurality of paths with another one of said plurality of batteries. 6. A selector circuit comprising: a selector output circuit configured to compare a plurality of signals each representative of a current level along a unique one of a plurality of paths with a plurality of threshold levels, each of said plurality of paths is coupled to a unique one of a plurality of batteries and a common node, wherein each of said plurality of batteries is associated with one of said plurality threshold levels and wherein each of said plurality of paths comprises a first switch and a second switch, said selector output circuit configured to close said first and second switch if said current level associated with one of said plurality of paths is greater than said threshold level corresponding to said batteries coupled to said one of said plurality of paths. 7. The selector circuit of claim 6, wherein each current level is representative of a charge current from a respective one of said plurality of batteries. 8. The selector circuit of claim 7, wherein a first diode is coupled in parallel with said first switch, and a second diode is coupled in parallel with said second switch, wherein said first and said second diode are in reverse bias with respect to each other, and wherein said selector output circuit is further configured to open said second switch and close said first switch on any one of said plurality of paths if said charge current on said any one of said plurality of paths is less than said threshold level associated with said battery coupled to said any one of said plurality of paths to prevent cross conduction from said battery associated with said any one of said plurality of paths with another one of said plurality of batteries. 9. The selector circuit of claim 6, wherein each current level is representative of a first discharge current from a respective one of said plurality of batteries. 10. The selector circuit of claim 9, wherein a first diode is coupled in parallel with said first switch, and a second diode is coupled in parallel with said second switch, wherein said first and said second diode are in reverse bias with respect to each other, and wherein said selector output circuit is further configured to open said second switch and close said first switch on any one of said plurality of paths if said charge current on said any one of said plurality of paths is less than said threshold level associated with said battery coupled to said any one of said plurality of paths to prevent cross conduction from said battery associated with said any one of said plurality of paths with another one of said plurality of batteries.
