Panels and their modules, such as for walls and roofs, are disclosed that provide armored shelter for protecting people and equipment from ballistic projectiles and mortar attacks. Each module is made from multiple co-parallel plates arranged in a stack, spaced apart, and held together along their sides by side elements. This is done in such a way that, when assembled side-by-side or end-to-end into panels, adjacent modules overlap one another to prevent straight-through seams yet allow any damaged module to be removed and replaced without moving adjacent modules. Space within a module, between plates and sides, can contain energy absorbing material in a variety of shapes. Plates serve as structural flanges, and side elements comprise structural webs, to permit each module to function as a structural beam. With such designs, the modules and panels are easily and quickly inserted and/or removed individually by a sequence of simple manipulations.

We claim: 1. A method of fitting a middle building module between two other modules; wherein each of the three modules is elongated between two opposite ends and has two opposite faces and two opposite sides; wherein each of the sides has a side lap overhang; and wherein the two other modules are pre-aligned parallel to one another and set apart from one another with just enough space between them that when the middle module is between them, they form a closely fitting row of modules that has opposite faces each comprising one of the faces of each of the modules; the method comprising the steps of: a. translating the middle module in a first direction perpendicular to its faces and toward the other modules until a first of its side lap overhangs touches one of the other modules; b. translating the middle module in a second direction perpendicular to its sides and toward a second of its side lap overhangs; c. translating the middle module farther in the first direction until its opposite faces are each substantially co-planar with a face of each of the other modules. 2. The method of claim 1; wherein at least the middle building module is an armored building module. 3. The method of claim 1; wherein at least the middle building module is made of steel. 4. The method of claim 1; wherein at least the middle building module is hollow. 5. The method of claim 1; wherein at least the middle building module is filled with energy absorbing means for absorbing projectile and blast energy. 6. The method of claim 1; wherein at least one of the side lap overhangs of the middle building module is a strip of solid material. 7. The method of claim 1; wherein at least one of the side lap overhangs of the middle building module comprises two spaced apart strips of solid material. 8. A method of removing a middle building module from being closely fitted between two adjacent and similar modules; wherein each of the modules is elongated between two opposite ends, has two opposite sides each of which includes a side lap overhang, and has two opposite faces that face outward; and wherein the three modules are oriented alongside one another forming a row in which each module that is adjacent to another module has one of its side lap overhangs overhanging the side lap overhang of the adjacent module; the method comprising the steps of: a. translating the middle module in a first direction perpendicular to a face of the middle module a distance sufficient to clear a first side lap overhang of the middle module relative to a first face of a first adjacent module; b. translating the middle module in a second direction toward a side of the first adjacent module; and c. translating the middle module in said first direction a distance sufficient to clear the entire middle module from the row. 9. The method of claim 8; wherein at least the middle building module is an armored building module. 10. The method of claim 8; wherein at least the middle building module is made of steel. 11. The method of claim 8; wherein at least the middle building module is hollow. 12. The method of claim 8; wherein at least the middle building module is filled with energy absorbing means for absorbing projectile and blast energy. 13. The method of claim 8; wherein at least one of the side lap overhangs of the middle building module is a strip of solid material. 14. The method of claim 8; wherein at least one of the side lap overhangs of the middle building module comprises two spaced apart and co-parallel strips of solid material. 15. A reversible method of removing a selected building module from between adjacent and similar building modules comprised by a building panel; wherein each of the modules is elongated between two opposite ends, has two opposite sides each of which includes a side lap overhang, and has two opposite faces that face outward; wherein the panel has two ends which respectively comprise the opposite ends of the modules and has two faces which respectively comprise the opposite faces of each of the modules; the method comprising the steps of: a. translating the selected module in a first direction perpendicular to a face of the selected module a distance sufficient to clear a first side lap overhang of the selected module relative to a first face of the panel; b. translating the selected module in a second direction perpendicular to one of the sides of the selected module in a direction toward which said first side lap overhang extends; and c. translating the selected module in said first direction a distance sufficient to clear the entire selected module from the panel; whereby said building module can be both selectively removed and replaced with another similar module without having to move the adjacent modules. 16. The method of claim 15; wherein at least the selected building module is an armored building module. 17. The method of claim 15; wherein at least the selected building module is made of steel. 18. The method of claim 15; wherein at least the selected building module is hollow. 19. The method of claim 15; wherein at least the selected building module is filled with energy absorbing means for absorbing projectile and blast energy. 20. The method of claim 15; wherein at least one of the side lap overhangs of the selected building module comprises two spaced apart and co-parallel strips of solid material.
