A food package for sliced food products to be maintained with a fluffed appearance, the package including a rigid base member forming a compartment for receiving the food product and a rigid lid sealed to the compartment. Advantageously, the base member includes a bottom wall and side wall portions that are configured to engage the food product to hold the slices in a fluffed arrangement thereof. Preferably, one or more tapered side wall portions hold the food product upwardly toward the lid and inwardly toward a center of the package. In preferred embodiments, the base member and lid provide a rigid-rigid construction of the food package. In preferred embodiments, the food package is also configured to stand-up in a vertical display orientation and does not require the food product be contained within a sealed pouch within the compartment.

A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product, the method comprising: providing a package, the package including a rigid base member having a compartment in which food product is received, a bottom wall, an opening to the compartment above the bottom wall, and sidewall portions of the compartment upstanding from the bottom wall, each of the sidewall portions having an upper section, and a rigid lid covering the opening to contain a food product within the compartment, a portion of the rigid lid adapted to fit within the opening and nest with the upper section of the sidewall portions of the compartment; locating the package against a rail; aligning an anvil with the rail; shifting the anvil toward the rail; deforming adjacent regions of the base member and the rigid lid into a depression formed in the aligned rail to substantially simultaneously form an aligned lug and recess of the package, the lug being formed in the portion of the rigid lid and the recess being formed in the upper section of one of the sidewall portions of the compartment. 2. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 1, further comprising aligning at least one other anvil with the rail and shifting the anvils toward the rail to substantially simultaneously form a plurality of aligned lugs and recesses of the package. 3. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 2, wherein the package is generally rectangular and the plurality of aligned lugs and recesses are formed on one side of the package and a corresponding number of aligned lugs and recesses are formed on an opposing side of the package, the remaining sides of the package being free from aligned lugs and recesses. 4. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 2, wherein the step of providing a package includes the step of providing a package containing a food product in the compartment and sealing the lid to the base member after the food product is placed in the compartment. 5. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 4, wherein the package contains sliced food product and the compartment having a predetermined configuration for engaging the food product to hold the slices in a fluffed arrangement. 6. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 1, wherein the depression comprises a channel formed in the rail. 7. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 6, including the step of directly contacting the portion of the rigid lid with the anvil and directly contacting the upper section of the sidewall portion of the base member with the aligned rail. 8. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 7, including the step of providing a pair of common supports each having a plurality of anvils mounted thereon, locating the package against a second rail, aligning the common supports and anvils mounted thereon with an adjacent rail, and shifting each of the common supports toward the corresponding rail to form a plurality of lugs and recesses. 9. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein an average thickness of the base member and the lid is between 0.4 mm and 1.0 mm, and the anvils and channels in the rails are dimensioned to form lugs having a depth of between 1.0 mm and 3.0 mm and to form recesses having a depth of between 1.2 mm and 3.2 mm. 10. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein a pair of aligned lugs and recesses are provided on a pair of opposing sides of the package. 11. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein at least one of the aligned lugs and recesses is partially located along the radius of a corner of the package. 12. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein the temperature of the rail is controlled to be between about 40° F. and about 80° F. and the temperature of the anvil is controlled to be between about 120° F. and about 250° F. during the forming step. 13. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein the lugs and recesses have a length and a thickness, the length being greater than the thickness, and a cross-section of the thickness perpendicular to the length selected from the group consisting of substantially V-shaped, substantially rounded, and substantially square. 14. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 13, wherein the lugs and recesses have an asymmetric cross-section of the thickness perpendicular to the length. 15. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein the lugs and recesses are dimensioned and are in a quantity to have a combined average separation force greater than 2 pounds. 16. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein the lugs and recesses are dimensioned and are in a quantity to have a combined average separation force of between 2.2 and 2.8 pounds. 17. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 8, wherein the lugs and recesses are dimensioned and are in a quantity to have a combined separation force that is greater than twice the weight of food product contained within the compartment. 18. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 1, wherein the lid and base have a separation force of between 2.2 and 2.8 pounds. 19. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product, the method comprising: providing a package, the package including a rigid base member having a compartment in which food product is received, a bottom wall, an opening to the compartment above the bottom wall, and sidewall portions of the compartment upstanding from the bottom wall, each of the sidewall portions having an upper section, and a rigid lid covering the opening to contain a food product within the compartment, a portion of the rigid lid adapted to fit within the opening and nest with the upper section of the sidewall portions of the compartment; locating the package against a rail; aligning an anvil having an asymmetrical cross section with the rail; shifting the anvil toward the rail; substantially simultaneously forming an asymmetrical lug in the portion of the rigid lid and an asymmetrical recess in the upper section of one of the sidewall portions of the compartment, the asymmetrical lug being configured to require a greater force to remove the lug from the recess as compared to an insertion force such that the lid is more easily connected to the base member than removed therefrom. 20. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 19 further comprising aligning the anvil with a depression in the rail and passing a portion of the anvil into the depression. 21. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 20 wherein the anvil has a generally V-shaped cross section and the step of passing a portion of the anvil into the depression includes at least partially inserting upper and lower sloped surfaces of the anvil into the depression. 22. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 21 wherein the upper and lower sloped surfaces of the anvil are at different angles relative to a horizontal plane and the upper sloped surface has a lesser angle relative to the plane than the lower sloped surface such that lower sloped surface serves as a ramp to deflect a portion of the base member as the lid is pressed into the opening of the base member. 23. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 19 wherein the lug and recess have a length and a thickness, the length being greater than the thickness, and a cross-section of the thickness perpendicular to the length selected from the group consisting of substantially V-shaped, substantially rounded, and substantially square. 24. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 19, further including the step of substantially simultaneously forming a plurality of asymmetrical lugs in the portion of the rigid lid and a plurality of asymmetrical recesses in the upper section of one of the sidewall portions of the compartment. 25. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product, the method comprising: providing a package, the package including a rigid base member having a compartment in which food product is received, a bottom wall, an opening to the compartment above the bottom wall, and sidewall portions of the compartment upstanding from the bottom wall, each of the sidewall portions having an upper section, and a rigid lid covering the opening to contain a food product within the compartment, a portion of the rigid lid adapted to fit within the opening and nest with the upper section of the sidewall portions of the compartment; locating opposed sides of the package against a pair of substantially parallel rails; aligning an anvil with one of the rails and aligning another anvil with the other of the pair of rails; shifting one of the anvils toward one of the rails to substantially simultaneously form a pair of aligned lugs and recesses and shifting the other of the anvils toward the other of the rails to substantially simultaneously form a pair of aligned lugs and recesses, the lugs being formed in the portion of the rigid lid and the recesses being formed in the upper section of the sidewall portions of the compartment. 26. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 25 further comprising the steps of seating opposed portions of a ridge of the base member on top of the rails and advancing the package along the rails with the opposed portions of the base member ridge seated on the rails and opposed sides of the package located against the rails. 27. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 25 wherein shifting the anvils toward the rails includes passing portions of the anvils into depressions in the aligned rails and deforming adjacent regions of the upper section of the sidewall portions of the base member and the portion of the rigid lid into the depressions of the aligned rails. 28. A method of forming a reclose mechanism in a reclosable package for containing a food product in accordance with claim 25, wherein at least one of the pairs of lugs and recesses are asymmetric such that the force required to attach the lid to the base is less than the force required to remove the lid from the base.
