The lid can be opened from two sides to allow easy access for a driver and passengers to an interior storage compartment. The base includes at least two rods, which can act as axles for the lid to pivot about. The lid includes at least one rotation member or guide which can be released from the rod only when the lid is in a desired position, for example, a closed position. The lid can include a latch for each rod. The lid can have a lock to secure one or both of the latches with the lid in a closed position.

A storage compartment comprising: a base comprising at least two engagement rods; a cover comprising: a first latch configured to selectively engage one of the plurality of engagement rods; a first guide linearly displaced from the first latch and configured to rotatably couple to one of the plurality of engagement rods; a second latch configured to selectively engage another of the plurality of engagement rods; a second guide linearly displaced from the second latch and configured to rotatably couple the other of the plurality of engagement rods; and a lock mechanism configured to selectively engage both the first latch and the second latch. 2. The storage compartment of claim 1, wherein the cover has four sides. 3. The storage assembly storage compartment of claim 1, wherein the engagement rods are metal. 4. The storage compartment of claim 1, wherein the base is integrally formed with a vehicle. 5. The storage compartment of claim 1, wherein the engagement rods are disposed along four sides of the base. 6. The storage compartment of claim 5, wherein the cover comprises four sides, each side having a release device. 7. The storage compartment of claim 1, wherein the first and second guides are adapted to decouple the cover from the engagement rods when the cover is in a first position. 8. The storage compartment of claim 7, wherein the first and second guides are adapted to inhibit decoupling of the cover from the engagement rods when the cover is in a second position. 9. The storage compartment of claim 8, wherein the first position is an open position. 10. The storage compartment of claim 8, wherein the second position is a closed position.
