The present invention is an electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC) series stack formed into a single electrolyte cell structure. The concatenated multiple electrode assembly stack has electrode assemblies electrically connected in series. The electrode assemblies have a double-sided activated carbon electrode formed on a current collector. Power tabs are connected to the end electrode assemblies. An electrolyte is also provided. A poly bag contains the electrolyte and the electrode assemblies. The electrode assemblies form a double-sided activated-carbon electrode on a current collector. The EDLC stack has a number of segments and mass free zones separating them. The segments are folded so that mass free zones are disposed at the apex of each fold.

What is claimed is: 1. An electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC) stack, comprising: a) a series multiple voltage stack having a plurality of electrode assemblies electrically connected in series, said electrode assemblies having a double-sided activated carbon electrode formed on a current collector, the series multiple voltage stack including a plurality of segments and a plurality of mass free zones separating the plurality of segments; b) an electrolyte; and c) a poly bag for containing said electrolyte and said plurality of electrode assemblies. 2. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 1, further comprising power tabs operatively connected to said plurality of electrode assemblies. 3. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 1, wherein said poly bag provides an external interface for said cell stack. 4. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 1, wherein said plurality of segments is folded so that said mass free zones are disposed at the apex of said folds. 5. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 1, wherein said poly bag is shaped to conform to said EDLC stack. 6. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 1, wherein said poly bag comprises a one cell structure having one electrolyte source for accommodating a plurality of variant voltage stacks, thereby yielding a variant of different terminal voltage limits. 7. An electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC) stack, comprising: a) a series multiple voltage stack having a plurality of electrode assemblies electrically connected in series, the series multiple voltage stack including a plurality of segments and a plurality of mass free zones separating said plurality of segments; b) an electrolyte; and c) a housing for containing said plurality of electrode assemblies. 8. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 7, further comprising power tabs operatively connected to said plurality of electrode assemblies. 9. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 7, wherein said housing provides an external interface for said cell stack. 10. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 7, wherein said electrode assemblies comprise a double-sided activated carbon electrode formed on a current collector. 11. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 7, wherein said plurality of segments is folded so that said mass free zones are disposed at the apex of said folds. 12. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 7, wherein said housing is shaped to conform to said EDLC stack. 13. The EDLC stack in accordance with claim 7, wherein said housing is a one cell structure containing one electrolyte source which can accommodate a multitude of variant voltage stacks thereby yielding a variant of different terminal voltage limits. 14. An apparatus, comprising: a plurality of electrodes coated at least partially with activated carbon, each electrode from the plurality of electrodes having a plurality of segments and a plurality of mass free zones separating each segment from the plurality of segments from at least one other segment from the plurality of segments, the plurality of electrodes being folded to define an electrode stack. 15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein each electrode from the plurality of electrodes is folded to define a plurality of folds, each mass free zone from the plurality of mass free zones being disposed at a fold from the plurality of folds. 16. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising: a housing configured to contain the electrode stack; and an electrolyte disposed within the housing. 17. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising: power tabs electrically coupled to the plurality of electrodes. 18. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein each mass free zone from the plurality of mass free zones electrically isolates a first segment from the plurality of segments from a second segment from the plurality of segments. 19. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising: a separator material disposed between each electrode from the plurality of electrodes. 20. An apparatus, comprising: a first electrode having a first plurality of activated carbon pads, each activated carbon pad from the first plurality of activated carbon pads being carbon isolated from the other activated carbon pads from the first plurality of activated carbon pads; and a second electrode having a second plurality of activated carbon pads, each activated carbon pad from the second plurality of activated carbon pads being carbon isolated from the other activated carbon pads from the second plurality of activated carbon pads. 21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein each activated carbon pad from the first plurality of activated carbon pads is carbon isolated from the other activated carbon pads from the first plurality of activated carbon pads by a mass free zone. 22. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the first electrode defines a plurality of carbonless portions disposed between each activated carbon pad from the first plurality of activated carbon pads. 23. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the first electrode is folded with the second electrode to define a plurality of electrode assemblies electrically coupled in series. 24. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising: a housing containing the plurality of electrode assemblies; and an electrolyte disposed within the housing.
