In a wireless class-based data communications network, a class-switching method includes configuring a wireless two-way RF data communication device, of a wireless class-based data communications network, to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate wireless class-based data communications network such that the particular wireless two-way RF data communication device joins the proximate wireless class-based data communications network. Another class-switching method includes communicating a command to a wireless two-way RF data communication device of a wireless class-based data communications network to change its class designation to that of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate wireless class-based data communications network such that the wireless two-way RF data communication device joins the proximate wireless class-based data communications network.

The class-switching method of claim 1, wherein the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network when the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is no longer able to communicate in its respective class-based data communications network. 3. The class-switching method of claim 1, wherein the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network upon receiving a class adoption command in an RF communication. 4. The class-switching method of claim 1, wherein the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network in response to a change in a location of the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices. 5. The class-switching method of claim 1, wherein the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network in response to a change in a status of the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices. 6. The class-switching method of claim 1, wherein the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network in response to a change in behavior of the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices. 7. The class-switching method of claim 1, wherein the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network in response to a change in characteristics of the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices. 8. The class-switching method of claim 1, wherein the particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to adopt a different class designation of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network in response to a change in a class designation of another particular one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices of its respective class-based data communications network. 9. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein the class-based data communications network comprises an ad hoc wireless network. 10. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of wireless two-way RF data communication devices is mobile. 11. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein each wireless two-way RF data communication device comprises memory in which a profile of the wireless two-way RF data communication device is stored, the profile comprising a class designation that has been assigned to the wireless two-way RF data communication device, and wherein the profile further comprises a unique identification of the wireless two-way RF data communication device. 12. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein each wireless two-way RF data communication device is attached to an asset to be tracked and wherein the class represents a common characteristic or behavior of the asset. 13. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein one or more of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices stores sensor-acquired information in the memory thereof. 14. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein the identified specific data is found to correspond to the stored class designation when the identified specific data matches the stored class designation. 15. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein the identified specific data is found to correspond to the stored class designation when the identified specific data matches an abstracted class of the stored class designation. 16. The class-based data communications network of claim 1, wherein the identified specific data is found to correspond to the stored class designation when the identified specific data matches a subclass of the stored class designation. 17. In a class-based data communications network comprising a plurality of wireless two-way radio frequency (RF) data communication devices, each forming a node of the class-based data communications network, and each including a memory having stored therein at least one class designation, wherein each of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is configured to identify specific data in each wireless communication received by it and process the wireless communication if the specific data identified corresponds to its class designation, and not process the wireless communication if the specific data identified does not correspond to its class designation, whereby the class-based data communications network formed by the wireless two-way RF data communication devices is distinguished and separated from other proximate class-based data communications networks, a class-switching method comprising the step of, communicating a command to at least one of the wireless two-way RF data communication devices of the class-based data communications network to change its class designation to that of another wireless two-way RF data communication device of a proximate class-based data communications network such that the at least one wireless two-way RF data communication device joins the proximate class-based data communications network. 18. The class-switching method of claim 17, wherein the command is communicated from a hand held wireless two-way RF data communication device. 19.
