A high voltage propellant isolator includes at least two different types of isolator rings or segments, in alternating lateral arrangement, that direct the flow of propellant, such as xenon gas, in a tortuous path through the isolator.

What is claimed is: 1. A propellant electrical isolator, comprising: a housing; a plurality of first isolator segments interior to the housing, wherein the first isolator segments comprise a first opening; and a plurality of second isolator segments interior to the housing, wherein each first isolator segment is located adjacent to at least one of the second isolator segments and wherein the second isolator segments comprise a second opening, the second opening of the second isolator segments different than the first opening of the first isolator segments such that gas flows through the propellant electrical isolator in a tortuous path to increase an effective path length of the gas to increase an electrical standoff capability of the propellant electrical isolator. 2. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, wherein the first opening is a hole through the center of the first isolator segments. 3. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, wherein the second segments comprise two or more openings. 4. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 3, wherein the second segments comprise four openings. 5. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 3, wherein at least a portion of the second segments contact the inner surface of the housing, and wherein the openings are formed between a surface of the second segment and the inner surface of the housing. 6. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, wherein the first opening does not overlap with the second opening. 7. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, wherein the first opening is a hole through the center of the first isolator segments and the second opening comprises four passages along an outer portion of the second isolator segments. 8. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, further comprising a mesh screen located between each first and second isolator segment. 9. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, wherein the isolator segments are comprised of ceramic. 10. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 2, wherein there are N first isolator segments and N−1 second isolator segments. 11. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 10, wherein a first one of the first isolator segments is located at an input of the propellant electrical isolator and the Nth of the first isolator segments is located at an output of the propellant electrical isolator. 12. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 11, wherein a first one of the second isolators is located next to the first one of the first isolators and subsequent first and second isolators are located alternately along the isolator. 13. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, wherein the gas is a noble gas. 14. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 13, wherein the gas is xenon. 15. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 1, further comprising a first conduit at a low potential at an input of the propellant electrical isolator and a second conduit at a high potential at an output of the propellant electrical isolator. 16. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 15, wherein the first conduit is at ground and the second conduit is at 1000 volts. 17. A propellant electrical isolator, comprising: a housing; a plurality of first isolator segments interior to the housing, wherein the first isolator segments comprise a first opening; and a plurality of second isolator segments interior to the housing, wherein each first isolator segment is located adjacent to at least one of the second isolator segments and wherein the second isolator segments comprise a second opening, the second opening of the second isolator segments different than the first opening of the first isolator segments such that propellant gas flows through the propellant electrical isolator in a tortuous path to increase an effective path length of the propellant gas to increase an electrical standoff capability of the propellant electrical isolator. 18. The propellant electrical isolator of claim 17 wherein the propellant gas is a noble gas.
