What is claimed is: 1. A stud for use with a fastening assembly that includes a receptacle assembly, having a bracket constructed and arranged to be secured to a panel and an internally threaded nut for receiving the stud therein, said stud comprising: a base, a head, and a shank disposed therebetween, the shank including an exterior surface having a threaded section that includes proximal and distal ends, the exterior surface including at least two longitudinal channels extending in a diametrically disposed location, each channel including a lobe disposed in the channel, said lobe having a peak where the depth of the channel is smallest in comparison to the rest of the channel, said lobe extending longitudinally substantially from the distal end to the proximal end of the threaded section of the shank. 2. The stud of claim 1, wherein each channel is defined by an interior surface and sidewalls with said lobe protruding from the interior surface of the channel between the sidewalls of the channel. 3. The stud of claim 1 wherein the lobe includes a proximal engagement region closest to the head and a distal engagement region farther from the head for engagement tabs of a retaining ring. 4. The stud of claim 3 wherein the proximal engagement region has a diameter less than an inner opening of the retaining ring. 5. The stud of claim 3 wherein the distal engagement region is disposed at a free end of the shank. 6. The stud of claim 5 wherein the distal engagement region includes a distal flange that defines an outer diameter that is greater than an inner opening of the retaining ring so that the stud is blocked from passing past the retaining ring. 7. The stud of claim 6 wherein the proximal engagement region has a diameter less than an inner opening of the retaining ring. 8. The stud of claim 1 wherein each said channel extends longitudinally and continuously at least from the distal end to the proximal end of the threaded section of the shank. 9. The stud of claim 1 wherein the head has a recess for receiving a tool. 10. The stud of claim 1 wherein the channel is longer than the threaded section. 11. A stud for use with a fastening assembly that includes a receptacle assembly, having a bracket constructed and arranged to be secured to a panel and an internally threaded nut for receiving the stud therein, said stud comprising: a base, a head, and a shank disposed therebetween, the shank including an exterior surface having a threaded section that includes proximal and distal ends, the exterior surface including two longitudinal channels extending in a diametrically disposed location, each channel including respective engagement regions at opposite ends thereof for engaging the tabs of a retaining ring, wherein the engagement regions are spaced apart by a spacing region and the spacing region is defined by a single lobe protruding from the interior surface of the channel between each of the engagement regions and between sidewalls of the channels; wherein each channel extends longitudinally and continuously at least from the distal end to the proximal end of the threaded section of the shank; and wherein said single lobe also extends substantially from the distal end to the proximal end of the threaded section of the shank and includes a peak point where the depth of the channel is smallest in comparison to the rest of the channel. 12. The stud of claim 11 wherein the lobe is formed as an arcuate region. 13. The stud of claim 11, wherein the lobe is formed by opposite ramps terminating at said respective engagement regions. 14. The stud of claim 13 wherein the opposite ramps are both planar. 15. The stud of claim 14 wherein the opposite ramps are each of substantially the same length. 16. The stud of claim 15 wherein the engagement regions include a proximal engagement region closest to the head and a distal engagement region farther from the head, wherein the distal engagement region includes a distal flange that defines an outer diameter that is greater than an inner opening of the retaining ring so that the stud is blocked from passing past the retaining ring, wherein the opposite ramps include a proximal ramp closest to the head and a distal ramp farther from the head, and wherein the distal ramp terminates at the distal flange. 17. The stud of claim 11, wherein the opposite ramps have the peak point where the ramps join. 18. A stud for use with a fastening assembly that includes a receptacle assembly, having a bracket constructed and arranged to be secured to a panel and an internally threaded nut for receiving the stud therein, said stud comprising: a base, a head, and a shank disposed therebetween, the shank including an exterior surface having a threaded section that includes proximal and distal ends, the exterior surface including two longitudinal channels extending in a diametrically disposed location, each channel including respective engagement regions at opposite ends thereof for engaging the tabs of a retaining ring, wherein the engagement regions are spaced apart by a spacing region and the spacing region is defined by a lobe protruding from the interior surface of the channel between each of the engagement regions and between sidewalls of the channels, and wherein the lobe defines a peak point where the depth of the channel is smallest in comparison to the rest of the channel; wherein only one symmetrically shaped lobe is provided and each channel extends longitudinally and continuously at least from the distal end to the proximal end of the threaded section of the shank; wherein said lobe extends substantially from the distal end to the proximal end of the threaded section of the shank. 19. The stud of claim 18, wherein the peak is defined by equal length ramps. 20. A stud for use with a fastening assembly that includes a receptacle assembly, having a bracket constructed and arranged to be secured to a panel and an internally threaded nut for receiving the stud therein, said stud comprising: a base; a head; and a shank disposed therebetween; the shank having a longitudinal center axis and an exterior surface having a threaded section; the exterior surface including at least two longitudinal channels extending in parallel with the longitudinal center axis of the shank; each channel including a lobe disposed in the channel; the lobe having a peak where the depth of the channel is smallest in comparison to the rest of the channel; the lobe including, on opposite sides of the peak, respective side lobe surfaces that are of gradual increase in channel depth from the peak; the lobe extending longitudinally for a distance within the channel that is an order of magnitude greater than the maximum depth of the channel; wherein the shank has a threaded section that includes proximal and distal ends, the lobe extending longitudinally substantially from the distal end to the proximal end of the threaded section of the shank. 21.
