An embolic protection device has a collapsible filter element (105) mounted on a carrier such as a guidewire (101). The filter element (105) collapses into the outer end of a catheter (118) for deployment and retrieval through a vascular system of a patient. The filter element (105) has a collapsible filter body with a proximal inlet end and a distal outlet end. The proximal inlet end has inlet openings sized to allow blood and embolic material enter the filter body. The outlet end has outlet openings which allow through passage of blood but retain embolic material within the filter body. After use, the catheter (118) is movable along the guidewire (101) to engage the proximal end of the filter element and close the inlet openings before sliding over the filter element from the proximal end to the distal end to progressively collapse the filter body on the guidewire (101) for retrieval. The filter element (105) may conveniently be mounted on a tubular sleeve (104) which is slidable and rotatable on the guidewire (101) between spaced-apart stops (106, 120) on the guidewire (101) which allows some manipulation of the guidewire independently of the filter when the filter is in use.

The invention claimed is: 1. An embolic protection device, comprising: a guidewire having a proximal end and a distal end, and a transversely extending protrusion fixed adjacent the distal end; a first tubular member and a second tubular member, the tubular members disposed about the guidewire, the tubular members being independently and longitudinally slidable over the guidewire, the second tubular member being slidable over the first tubular member; a porous member attached to at least one of the tubular members; and wherein the first tubular member is free to move along the guidewire up to the protrusion. 2. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first tubular member includes a plurality of arms connected thereto. 3. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 2, wherein the arms comprise NiTi alloy. 4. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 3, wherein the NiTi alloy comprises Nitinol. 5. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 2, wherein the arms are moveable between a first position and an expanded position. 6. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 5, wherein the porous member is attached to the arms. 7. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 6, wherein, when the arms move from the first position to the expanded position, the porous member moves from a collapsed to an expanded position. 8. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 7, wherein, when the porous member is in the expanded position, blood and emboli can pass by a proximal portion of the arms, blood can flow through the porous member, and emboli can be retained by the porous member. 9. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 2, wherein the plurality of arms are not connected to second tubular member. 10. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 1, wherein the porous member is attached to both the first and second tubular members. 11. An embolic protection device, comprising: a guidewire having a proximal end and a distal end, and a transversely extending protrusion fixed adjacent the distal end; a first tubular member and a second tubular member, the tubular members disposed about the guidewire, the tubular members being independently and longitudinally slidable over the guidewire; and a shaped polymeric member attached to at least one of the tubular members, wherein the first tubular member is free to move along the guidewire up to the protrusion, and the shaped polymeric member comprises a pattern of proximal openings to allow emboli and blood to enter the member and a pattern of distal openings to allow the blood to pass through the member while retaining the emboli within the member. 12. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 11, wherein the first tubular member includes a plurality of arms connected thereto, the arms being moveable between a first position and an expanded position, the shaped polymeric member is attached to the arms. 13. An embolic protection device in accordance with claim 12, wherein the shaped polymeric member is attached to both the first and second tubular members, and the plurality of arms are not connected to second tubular member.
