A message exchange network is disclosed in which at least two different methods of storing messages in memories of message storage entities, e.g., a mobile handset, an SMSC, an e-mail client, or an e-mail server, are utilized based on the type and the content of the information contained within the message. An information service message containing information that is supercedingly updateable, e.g., stock quote, weather or traffic information, is stored using a replacement method by which an older message previously stored is replaced by a newly received message. All other types of messages are stored using an append method by which the newly received message is stored in an unoccupied available memory location. In a disclosed embodiment, message identifier included in the message itself provides information necessary to distinguish between the aforementioned two types of messages. In a disclosed embodiment, a block of message identifiers is reserved for storage of information service messages. The architectures and methods for receipt, delivery and storage of messages disclosed herein replaceable and/or on demand update of information service messages while providing efficient use of memory in which the messages are stored, avoiding the annoyance and inconvenience to the subscriber in having to scroll through numerous stale and/or obsolete messages in order to view the most current up to date message and having to manually selecting and deleting obsolete and stale messages, and avoiding unnecessary deliveries of the obsolete and stale messages by message centers.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of providing an updated file for a wireless device, comprising: transmitting to a wireless handset an initial updateable Short Message Service (SMS) message having a message identifier for presentation in a queue of said wireless handset; transmitting to said wireless handset a superseding updateable SMS message having a message identifier for overwriting said initial updateable SMS message from said queue upon a match between identifiers of said initial and superseding SMS messages; wherein said overwriting results in effective deletion from said queue of said initial updateable SMS message. 2. The method of providing an updated file for a wireless device according to claim 1, wherein: a need for said superseding SMS message update is determined by a subscriber's mobile handset. 3. The method of providing an updated file for a wireless device according to claim 1, wherein: a need for said superseding SMS message is determined by a Short Message Service Center (SMSC). 4. The method of providing an updated file for a wireless device according to claim 1, wherein: a revision of said superseding SMS message is determined based on a number or text string contained in a subject field of said initial updateable SMS message. 5. The method of providing an updated file for a wireless device according to claim 1, wherein: said identifiers of said initial and superseding SMS messages comprises respective origination addresses of said SMS messages. 6. A method of revising a stored file for a wireless device, comprising: receiving in a queue a wireless handset device an initial updateable Short Message Service (SMS) message; determining if a superseding updateable SMS message is available for said wireless handset; examining respective sources of said initial and superseding SMS messages; and in response to a match between respective sources, overwriting said initial updateable SMS message from said queue with said superseding updateable SMS message. 7. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 6, wherein: said superseding updatable SMS is received on-demand in response to an on-demand request message. 8. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 7, wherein: said on-demand request message utilizes a mobile originated short message. 9. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 6, wherein: said wireless handset device is a mobile telephone. 10. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 6, further comprising: alerting a user of said wireless handset of receipt of said superseding updateable SMS message. 11. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 10, wherein: said alerting said user includes an audible alerting sound. 12. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 10, wherein: said alerting said user includes a message placed on a display of said wireless handset. 13. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 6, wherein: each of said respective sources comprises an identifier indicative of a message source. 14. The method of revising a stored file for a wireless device according to claim 13, wherein: each of said respective identifiers comprises a message origination address. 15. Apparatus for revising a stored file for a wireless device, comprising: means for receiving in a queue of a wireless handset an initial updateable Short Message Service (SMS) message; means for determining if a superseding updatable SMS message is available for said wireless handset by examining respective identifiers of said initial and superseding SMS messages; and means for overwriting said initial updateable SMS message from said queue with said superseding updateable SMS message in response to a match between said identifiers. 16. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 15, wherein: said superseding updateable SMS message is received on-demand in response to an on-demand request message. 17. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 15, wherein: said on-demand request message utilizes a mobile originated short message. 18. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 15, wherein: said wireless handset is a mobile telephone. 19. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 15, further comprising: means for alerting a user of said wireless handset of receipt of said superseding updateable SMS message. 20. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 19, wherein: said means for alerting said user includes an audible alerting sound. 21. The apparatus for revising a stored file in a wireless device according to claim 19, wherein: said means for alerting said user includes a message placed on a display of said wireless handset.
