Such methods and systems include optical facilities for modifying light from a lighting unit, such as an LED-based lighting unit, including variable optical facilities and fixed optical facilities. Also provided are methods and systems for using multi-color lighting units in a variety of commercial applications. The invention claimed is: 1. A lighting system, comprising: a plurality of LEDs selected from a group consisting of red, green, blue, amber, white, orange and UV LEDs; a controller adapted to control an overall color formed by combined light from at least two different color LEDs of the plurality of LEDs; and a variable optical facility adapted to modify the combined light in response to mechanical activity, wherein the variable optical facility is configured to contain a fluid and is adapted to be deformed in response to mechanical activity such that at least a portion of the combined light is altered. 2. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the lighting system is adapted to permit the variable optical facility to be varied in response to a user input. 3. The lighting system of claim 2, further comprising a user interface adapted to receive the user input. 4. The lighting system of claim 1, further comprising a piezoelectric component configured and arranged to provide the mechanical activity. 5. The lighting system of claim 1, further comprising an actuator to provide the mechanical activity. 6. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein substantially all of the combined light is altered. 7. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be further varied in response to electrical activity. 8. The lighting system of claim 7, wherein the variable optical facility comprises a MEMS device. 9. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in response to preprogrammed input. 10. The lighting system of claim 9, wherein the lighting system is configured such that the preprogrammed input is provided to the variable optical facility by the controller. 11. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the lighting system is coupled to a network and the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in response to a network command. 12. The lighting system of claim 1, further comprising: a sensor coupled to the variable optical facility. 13. The lighting system of claim 12, wherein the lighting system is configured such that the variable optical facility is varied in response to an output of the sensor. 14. The lighting system of claim 13, wherein the sensor is configured and arranged such that the output of the sensor is indicative of light from at least one of the plurality of LEDs. 15. The lighting system of claim 13, wherein the sensor comprises a temperature sensor. 16. The lighting system of claim 13, wherein the sensor comprises an acoustic sensor. 17. The lighting system of claim 16, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in coordination with a sound pattern. 18. The lighting system of claim 13, wherein the sensor is adapted to sense at least one of voltage and current. 19. The lighting system of claim 13, wherein the sensor comprises a digital data sensor. 20. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to be varied in coordination with a video display. 21. The lighting system of claim 1, wherein the variable optical facility is adapted to achieve a substantially continuous variation of the combined light over a selected interval of time. 22. The lighting system of claim 44, wherein the fluid comprises a compressible fluid. 46. The lighting system of claim 45, wherein the fluid comprises a gas. 47. The lighting system of claim 45, wherein the fluid comprises a liquid. 48. The lighting system of claim 44, wherein the liquid is semi-opaque. 49. The lighting system of claim 44, wherein the liquid includes bubbles arranged to modify the light from the LEDs. 50. The lighting system of claim 44, wherein the fluid is capable of glowing in response to the combined light.
