A surgical retractor includes a “swivel” having a string extending from one end and a string extending from the midpoint between the two ends. The swivel is delivered by pushing it out of a tube which is inserted through a small incision between the ribs of the patient. After the swivel is deployed, the tube is removed and the string which is attached to the center of the swivel is pulled to lift the pericardium. When the procedure is complete, the swivel is removed from the patient by pulling the string attached to the end of the swivel. According to one embodiment, the swivel is a cylinder with a blunt conical end. According to another embodiment, the swivel has a sharp end which is covered by a spring loaded collar.

A method for retracting tissue during surgery, said method comprising: a) using a deployment tool to introduce an elongate swivel distally into a body cavity and through the tissue to be retracted, the swivel having a proximal end and a substantially conical distal end tip, a first length of string extending from said proximal end of said swivel, and a second length of string extending from a point substantially midway between said proximal end and said distal end tip of said swivel; and b) pulling on the second length of string from outside the body cavity to cause said elongate swivel to swivel off of said deployment tool and to be oriented substantially perpendicular to said second length of string, until the tissue is retracted; wherein: said deployment tool has a key and said proximal end of said elongate swivel has a keyway, said key engaging said keyway, wherein said pulling on the second length of string causes said keyway to swivel off of said key. 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein: said keyway is non-circular. 3. A method for retracting tissue during surgery, said method comprising: a) using a deployment tool to introduce an elongate swivel distally into a body cavity and through the tissue to be retracted, the swivel having a proximal end and a substantially conical distal end tip, a first length of string extending from said proximal end of said swivel, and a second length of string extending from a point substantially midway between said proximal end and said distal end tip of said swivel; and b) pulling on the second length of string from outside the body cavity to cause said elongate swivel to swivel off of said deployment tool and to be oriented substantially perpendicular to said second length of string, until the tissue is retracted; wherein: said second length of string has a free end which does not re-enter said swivel; and said swivel has a surface groove extending substantially from said proximal end to said point substantially midway between said proximal end and said distal end tip, said surface groove receiving said second length of string.
