A system and method of presenting data from a plurality of data sources or objects which simultaneously distributes many sources of such data to many customers. Customer profiles are developed for the recipient describing how important certain characteristics of the data are to each customer. From these profiles, an “agreement matrix” is calculated by comparing the recipient's profiles to the actual profiles of the characteristics of the available data. The agreement matrix thus characterizes the attractiveness of each data to each prospective customer, and is used to produce a series of data which will provide the greatest satisfaction to each customer. The customer's profiles and/or the profiles of the data may be modified to reflect actual usage.
We claim: 1. A method of presenting data from a plurality of data objects comprising the steps of: creating at least one customer profile for a customer associated with a customer identity, said at least one customer profile indicating the customer's preferences for data having predetermined charac

A method of presenting data from a plurality of data objects comprising the steps of: creating at least one customer profile for a customer associated with a customer identity, said at least one customer profile indicating the customer's preferences for data having predetermined characteristics; storing the at least one customer profile in a memory in association with said customer identity; creating content profiles for each of said data objects, said content profiles indicating at least one of the presence and the degree of content of said predetermined characteristics in data of each of said data objects; retrieving the at least one customer profile subsequently from said memory, by name or said customer identity; relating said at least one retrieved customer profile with the content profiles for the data available from each data object; at a location remote from said customer, determining a subset of said data objects having content profiles which are determined in said relating step to most closely match said at least one customer profile; and presenting said determined subset of said data objects to said customer location from said remote location for selection by said customer. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising: creating content profiles for each data source of said data, said content profiles reflecting the customer profiles of those customers who have previously accessed said data from each data source. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting said subset of said data to said customer location comprises transmitting said subset of said data to said customer location from said location remote from said customer. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said determined subset of said data objects is presented to said customer at a personal computer at the customer location. 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising: accepting customer identity information from said customer via said personal computer. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein said plurality of data objects comprise a data object representing at least one product, and wherein the method further comprises: updating said at least one customer profile to indicate that said at least one product has already been provided to the customer; and preventing the data object representing said at least one product that has already been provided to the customer from being included in said determined subset of said data objects. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said data objects comprise data objects including data representing at least one movie available for rental, and wherein said at least one customer profile is updated to indicate that said at least one movie was already rented by the customer. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein said data objects comprise at least one data object representing at least one product, and wherein the method further comprises: updating said at least one customer profile based on a rating of the at least one product provided by the customer. 9. The method of claim 8, further comprising presenting to the customer at least one review of said at least one product to assist the customer in said selection. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein said data objects comprise a data object representing at least one product, and further comprising: presenting to the customer a portion of said at least one product to assist the customer in said selection. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said at least one product comprises media content, and wherein presenting to the customer a portion of said at least one product comprises playing a clip of said media content to assist the customer in said selection. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein said content profiles are created at least partially based on the popularity of said data, and wherein said subset of said data objects is determined at least partially based on said popularity. 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising: providing an advertisement to the customer based on the at least one customer profile. 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one customer profile includes the customer's location. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the data objects represent physical items. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein, in the act of determining, the determined subset is based on a degree of correlation of profiles and correspondence of textual information. 17. The method of claim 1, further comprising selling or renting a product to the customer based on the customer's selection. 18. The method of claim 1, further comprising encrypting data sent between the remote location and the customer's location. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the data objects represent software available to at least some customers. 20. The method of claim 1, further comprising modifying the at least one customer's profile in response to manual input from the customer. 21. The method of claim 1, further comprising limiting access to a customer profile in response to the customer providing an indication that such access is to be limited. 22. The method of claim 1, wherein the data objects represent books. 23. The method of claim 1, wherein the determined subset of said data objects is selected at least partially based on customer ratings of the data objects. 24. The method of claim 1, wherein the data objects represent video content. 25. The method of claim 1, wherein the data objects represent audio content. 26. A method of presenting data for selection from a plurality of data sources, comprising the steps of: creating at least one customer profile for each customer, said customer profile including a profile of data previously accessed by said customer; creating content profiles for each data source of said data, said content profiles reflecting the customer profiles of those customers who have previously accessed said data from each data source; relating said at least one customer profile with the content profiles for the data available to the customer from each data source; determining, using a microprocessor, a subset of data having content profiles which are determined, in said relating step, to most closely match said at least one customer profile; and presenting said subset of data to said customer for selection. 27. The method of claim 26, wherein the subset of data comprises a menu. 28. The method of claim 26, wherein the subset of data comprises a tree of possible menu items. 29. A method of presenting data from a plurality of data objects, comprising the steps of: creating at least one customer profile for a customer, said customer profile indicating the customer's preferences for data having predetermined characteristics; creating content profiles for each of said data objects, said content profiles indicating at least one of the presence or the degree of content of said predetermined characteristics in data of each of said data objects; relating, using a microprocessor, said at least one customer profile with the content profiles for the data available from each data object; at a location remote from said customer, determining a subset of said data objects having content profiles which are determined, in said relating step, to most closely match said at least one customer profile; and transmitting, via a data communication system, said determined subset of said data objects to said customer location for selection by said customer. 30. The method of claim 29, further comprising: creating content profiles for each data source of said data, said content profiles reflecting the customer profiles of those customers who have previously accessed said data from each data source. 31. A method of presenting data from a plurality of data objects, comprising the steps of: creating at least one at least one customer profile for a customer, said customer profile indicating the customer's preferences for data having predetermined characteristics; creating content profiles for each of said data objects, said content profiles indicating the presence of said predetermined characteristics in data of each of said data objects; relating, using a microprocessor, said at least one customer profile with the content profiles for the data available from each data object; at a location remote from said customer, determining a subset of said data objects having content profiles which are determined, in said relating step, to most closely match said at least one customer profile; and presenting, via a data communication system, said determined subset of said data objects to said customer location from said remote location for selection by said customer. 32. The method of claim 31, wherein said predetermined characteristics comprise at least one of performing artist, year of release, decade or century written, rock, easy listening, classical, country, length, or popularity on one or more charts. 33. A method as in claim 31 wherein said data object are comprised of data representing movies or music. 34. A method as in claim 31 wherein said predetermined characteristics are comprised of at least one of author, mystery, fiction, non-fiction, length, date of first publication, recent trade price, recent trade volume, industry, dividend size, risk, cost, or where traded. 35. A method as in claim 31 wherein said data object is comprised of a book, stock market listing, print information, personalized newspapers, real estate listings, or other textual data. 36. The method of claim 31, further comprising: creating content profiles for each data source of said data, said content profiles reflecting the customer profiles of those customers who have previously accessed said data from each data source. 37. A method of presenting data from a plurality of data objects, comprising the steps of: creating at least one at least one customer profile for a customer, said customer profile indicating the customer's preferences for data having predetermined characteristics; creating content profiles for each of said data objects, said content profiles indicating the degree of content of said predetermined characteristics in data of each of said data objects; relating, using a microprocessor, said at least one customer profile with the content profiles for the data available from each data object; at a location remote from said customer, determining a subset of said data objects having content profiles which are determined, in said relating step, to most closely match said at least one customer profile; and presenting, via a data communication system, said determined subset of data to said customer location from said remote location for selection by said customer. 38. The method of claim 37, further comprising: creating content profiles for each data source of said data, said content profiles reflecting the customer profiles of those customers who have previously accessed said data from each data source. 39. A method comprising: creating at least one customer profile for each eligible recipient of data from a plurality of data sources, said customer profile including a profile of data previously accessed by said eligible recipient; creating content profiles for each data source of said data, said content profiles reflecting the customer profiles of those recipients who have previously accessed said data from each data source; relating said at least one customer profile with the content profiles for the data available to the eligible recipient from each data source; determining, using a microprocessor, a subset of data having content profiles which are determined in said relating step to most closely match said at least one customer profile; and presenting said subset of data to said eligible recipient for selection. 40. A method of providing access to content, comprising: for each of a plurality of users, creating at least one user profile including a profile of content previously accessed by the user; for each of a plurality of information items from one or more information sources, creating a content profile reflecting the user profiles of those users who have previously accessed said plurality of information item; for at least a first of the plurality of users, determining, using a microprocessor, a subset of the plurality of information items that have content profiles that most closely correlate to said at least one user profile of the user; and providing the at least first user access to said subset of the plurality of information items. 41. The method of claim 40, further comprising: creating content profiles for each of said one or more information sources, said content profiles reflecting the user profiles of those users who have previously accessed said each of a plurality of information items from each of said one or more information sources. 42. A method of handling user information indicative of user preferences for content, comprising acts of: (A) for at least one user, creating at least one user profile indicating preferences of the at least one user for particular characteristics of content; (B) monitoring which of a plurality of information items from one or more information sources are accessed by the at least one user; (C) automatically updating, using a microprocessor, the user profile of the at least one user based, at least in part, on the content profiles of the plurality of information items accessed by the at least one user; (D) selecting, at a location remote from the at least one user and based on the at least one user profile, a subset of the plurality of information items that most closely match the at least one user profile; and (E) sending the selected subset of the plurality of information items to the at least one user. 43. The method of claim 42, wherein the act (C) comprises updating the at least one user profile based at least in part on a frequency of access of the accessed plurality of information items by users with user profiles substantially similar to the at least one user profile of the at least one user. 44. The method of claim 42, wherein the act (C) comprises updating the preferences of the at least one user for particular characteristics of information. 45. The method of claim 42, further comprising an act of: (F) for each of the plurality of information items from the one or more information sources, creating a content profile indicative of characteristics of content of information from each information source. 46. The method of claim 45, wherein the act (F) comprises, for at least one of the plurality of information items from the one or more information sources, creating a content profile indicating a degree to which content of the at least one of the plurality of information items has said characteristics of content of information. 47. The method of claim 45, wherein the act (F) comprises, for at least one of the plurality of information items from the one or more information sources, creating a content profile indicating whether the content of the at least one of the plurality of information items has said characteristics of content of information. 48. The method of claim 45, wherein the act (F) comprises, for at least one of the plurality of information items from the one or more information sources, expressing the content profile in mathematical terms. 49. The method of claim 42, wherein the act (A) comprises expressing the at least one user profile in mathematical terms. 50. The method of claim 42, further comprising an act of: (F) presenting the subset of the plurality of information items to the at least one user for selection by the at least one user. 51. The method of claim 50, wherein the act (F) comprises presenting a ranked list of the plurality of information items to the at least one user. 52. The method of claim 50, further comprising: (G) scheduling the presentation of the subset of the plurality of information items to the at least one user. 53. The method of claim 50, wherein (F) comprises presenting said selected subset of the plurality of information items to said at least one user at a personal computer at the at least one user's location. 54. The method of claim 53, wherein said at least one user is associated with a user identity, and the method further comprises: (G) storing the customer profile in a memory remote from said at least one user; (H) accepting user identity information from said at least one user via said personal computer; and (I) in response to (H) retrieving said customer profile from said memory, by name or said user identity. 55. The method of claim 54, wherein said customer profile is stored in said location remote from said user. 56. The method of claim 42, wherein: the at least one user comprises a plurality of users, the act (A) comprises, for each of the plurality of users, creating at least one user profile indicating preferences of the user for particular characteristics of content, the act (B) comprises monitoring which of a plurality of information items from one or more information sources are accessed by each user; and the act (C) comprises, for each of at least two of the users, updating the at least one user profile of the user based at least in part on the content profiles of the plurality of information items accessed by the user. 57. The method of claim 42, wherein the at least one user is a customer or potential customer. 58. The method of claim 42, wherein the content comprises video content. 59. The method of claim 42, wherein the content comprises audio content. 60. The method of claim 42, wherein the content comprises textual content. 61. The method of claim 42, further comprising an act of: (F) creating content profiles for each of said one or more information sources, said content profiles reflecting the user profiles of those users who have previously accessed said plurality of information items from each of said one or more information sources. 62. The method of claim 42, wherein said content comprises a content item, and wherein a first information item of said plurality of information items represents a characteristic of said content item, and wherein the method further comprises: (F) updating said at least one user profile to indicate that said content item has already been provided to the at least one user; and (G) preventing said first information item from being included in said selected subset of the plurality of information items. 63. The method of claim 62, wherein said content item comprises a movie available for rental, and wherein said at least one user profile is updated to indicate that said movie was already rented by the at least one user. 64. The method of claim 42, wherein said content comprises a content item, and wherein the method further comprises: updating said at least one user profile based on a rating of the content item provided by the user. 65. The method of claim 42, wherein said content comprises a content item, and wherein a first information item of said plurality of information items represents a characteristic of said content item, wherein said first information item is included in said selected subset, and wherein the method further comprises: presenting to the at least one user at least a portion of said content item to assist the at least one user in said selection. 66. The method of claim 65, wherein presenting a least a portion of said content item comprises playing a clip of said content item for the at least one user. 67. The method of claim 42, further comprising: presenting to the at least one user at least one review of said content item to assist the at least one user in said selection. 68. The method of claim 42, wherein (D) is performed at least partially based on the popularity of the content. 69. A system for presenting data from a plurality of data objects, the system comprising: a system controller configured to (a) create at least one customer profile for a customer associated with a customer identity, said at least one customer profile indicating the customer's preferences for data having first characteristics, (b) create content profiles for each of said data objects, said content profiles indicating at least one of the presence and the degree of content of said first characteristics in data of each of said data objects, (c) retrieve the at least one customer profile by customer identity, (d) relate said at least one retrieved customer profile with the content profiles for the data available from each data object, (e) at a location remote from said customer, determine a recommended subset of said data objects based on (d), and (f) present said determined subset of said data objects to said the customer's location from said remote location for selection by said customer, and a memory configured to store the customer profile in association with said customer identity. 70. A system for presenting data from a plurality of data objects, the system comprising: a system controller configured to (a) create at least one customer profile for a customer, said customer profile indicating the customer's preferences for data having predetermined characteristics, (b) create content profiles for each of said plurality of data objects, said content profiles indicating at least one of the presence or the degree of content of said predetermined characteristics in data of each of said data objects, (c) relate said at least one customer profile with the content profiles for the data available from each data object, and (d) at a location remote from said customer, determine a subset of said data objects having content profiles which most closely match said at least one customer profile, and a distribution system configured to transmit said determined subset of said data objects to the customer's location for selection by said customer. 71. A system for presenting data for selection from a plurality of data sources, the system comprising: a system controller configured to (a) create at least one at least one customer profile for each customer, said customer profile including a profile of data previously accessed by said customer, (b) create content profiles for each data source of said data, said content profiles reflecting the customer profiles of those customers who have previously accessed said data from each data source, (c) relate said at least one customer profile with the content profiles for the data available from each data source to the customer, (d) determine a subset of data having content profiles which most closely match said at least one customer profile, and (e) present said subset of data to said customer for selection.
