A device for shaping objects by removal of material from the surface thereof with a pulsed laser beam and a deflecting device through which the laser bean is guided over the surface of the object. An optical device is provided for changing the distribution of the radiation intensity inside the laser beam cross section. After the passage of the laser beam through this optical device, the radiation intensity has a bell-shaped or Gaussian distribution, or a distribution similar to a bell-shaped or Gaussian distribution, in at least one cross-sectional direction through the laser beam.

The invention claimed is: 1. A device for shaping an object comprising: a beam deflection device configured to guide a pulsed laser beam so as to scan over a surface of the object and remove material from the surface of the object; and an optical device including at least one optical element having a micro-optic structure disposed in a path of the pulsed laser beam, the laser beam having an intensity distribution in a laser beam cross-section, wherein the micro-optical structure is configured to cause a change in the intensity distribution as the laser beam passes through the micro-optical structure. 2. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the intensity distribution is radially symmetrical as the laser beam passes through the micro-optic structure. 3. The device as recited in claim 2, wherein the radially symmetrical intensity distribution includes an approximately uniform intensity in a circular central cross-sectional area and an intensity decreasing in a normal distribution from the circular central cross-sectional area to edge regions of the laser beam cross-section. 4. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the micro-optic structure is configured to transform a non-circular laser beam cross-section and an inhomogeneous intensity distribution into a circular laser beam cross-section and a homogenous intensity distribution as the laser beam passes through the micro-optical structure. 5. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the change in the intensity distribution includes a greater intensity at a center of the laser beam cross-section than at edge regions of the laser beam cross-section as the laser beam passes through the micro-optic structure. 6. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one optical element includes at least one of a diffractive and a refractive micro-optical structure. 7. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one optical element is selectively removable from the laser beam path. 8. The device as recited in claim 1, further comprising a vario-optical system disposed in the laser beam path and configured to influence a size of the laser beam cross-section directed on the surface of the object so as to cause spots corresponding to the laser beam cross-section to form on the surface of the object. 9. The device as recited in claim 1, further comprising a lens and an excimer laser configured to generate the pulsed laser beam, wherein the at least one optical element includes a diffractive micro-optic structure configured to transform a non-circular laser beam cross-section and an inhomogeneous intensity distribution into a circular laser beam cross-section and a homogenous intensity distribution after the laser beam passes through the diffractive micro-optic structure, and wherein the lens is configured to focus the pulsed laser beam leaving the diffractive micro-optic structure onto the surface. 10. The device as recited in claim 1, further comprising a lens and an excimer laser configured to generate the pulsed laser beam, wherein the at least one optical element includes a refractive micro-optic structure configured to transform a non-circular laser beam cross-section and an inhomogeneous intensity distribution into a circular laser beam cross-section and a homogenous intensity distribution after the laser beam passes through the refractive micro-optic structure, and wherein the lens is configured to focus the pulsed laser beam leaving the refractive micro-optic structure onto the surface.
