A portable, refrigerant recovery unit for transferring refrigerant from a refrigeration system to a storage tank. The recovery unit includes two, opposed piston heads rigidly attached to respective piston rods that extend along a common fixed axis. The piston rods are rigidly attached to the yoke member of a scotch yoke arrangement. In operation, incoming refrigerant from the system is simultaneously and continuously directed to the opposing piston heads wherein the forces of the pressurized refrigerant on them counterbalance or neutralize one another. The scotch yoke arrangement includes a two-piece slide mechanism mounted about a cylindrical crank pin and a single piston embodiment is additionally disclosed.

A portable, refrigerant recovery unit for transferring refrigerant from a refrigeration system to a storage tank, said recovery unit including:first and second piston heads (21,21′) respectively rigidly attached to first and second piston rods (23,23′), said piston rods (21,21′) extending along a common fixed axis (25) and being respectively rigidly attached to a yoke member (29) of a scotch yoke arrangement (31) to extend in opposite directions along said common fixed axis (25), wherein the yoke arrangement (31) comprises side pieces (27, 27′) that are in a fixed position relative to each other, said scotch yoke arrangement (31) translating rotational motion of a driving member into reciprocal movement of said yoke member (29), said piston rods (23, 23′) rigidly attached to said yoke member, and said piston heads (21, 21′) along said common fixed axis (25),each of said piston heads (21, 21′) being slidably and sealing received in a cylinder (33, 33′) respectively, each of said cylinders having a side wall (35,35′) and an end wall (37,37′), said end wall (37,37′) having an inlet (39,39′) and outlet (41,41′) therethrough with respective one-way valves (43,43′ and 45,45′) therein, each of said piston heads (21, 21′) having an outer surface (47, 47′) opposing said end wall (37, 37′) to define a chamber (49, 49′) with said end wall (37, 37′) and side walls (35, 35′) of each of said cylinders (33, 33′),said recovery unit further including incoming lines (7,7′) in fluid communication with each other and each of said inlets (39,39′) of each of said chambers (49,49′) upstream of each of the valves (43, 43′) in each of said inlets (39, 39′), said incoming lines (7,7′) additionally being in fluid communication with the refrigerant in said refrigeration system,each piston rod (23, 23′) moving the respective piston head (21, 21′) along said common fixed axis (25) relative to each of said end walls (37, 37′) between first and second positions to respectively expand the volume of the chamber (49,49′) to receive refrigerant from said refrigeration system into said chamber (49,49′) and to contract the volume of the chamber (49,49′) to drive said refrigerant out of said chamber, each of said piston heads (21, 21′) being in the respective first and second positions when the other piston head (21,21′) is in the respective second and first positions wherein any opposing forces (F,F′) exerted by the refrigerant on the respective outer surfaces (47,47′) of the piston heads (21,21′) along the common fixed axis (25) counterbalance one another wherein said scotch yoke arrangement (31) includes a multi-piece slide mechanism mounted within the yoke member (29) on a substantially cylindrical crank pin (38), said multi-piece slide mechanism including at least first and second pieces (44,44′) that are separate and respectively mounted for sliding movement relative to said yoke member (29) substantially perpendicular to the fixed common axis (25) as said yoke member (29) reciprocally moves along said common fixed axis (25), said first and second pieces (44,44′) rotatably receiving said crank pin (38) therebetween and being moved substantially perpendicular to said common fixed axis (25) thereby wherein said first and second pieces (44,44′) of said multi-piece slide mechanism abut one another, said recovery unit further including bearing members (50) between the respective first and second pieces (44,44′) and said crank pin (38), said first piece (44) having an abutment surface and said second pieces (44′) having an abutment surface, said first and second pieces (44,44′) abutting one another in a fixed position relative to each other along the respective abutment surfaces wherein at least one of said abutment surfaces includes a first groove (56) therein facing and aligned in a fixed position relative to said abutment surface of the other of said first and second pieces (44,44′) and in fluid communication with the bearing members, said recovery unit further including lubricant between said yoke member (29) and said first and second pieces (44,44′) of the slide mechanism wherein the sliding movement of the first and second pieces (44,44′) relative to said yoke member (29) forces lubricant through said first groove (56) to said bearing members (50).
