A medical information system receives patient data and information from various sources and displays such information in a variety of formats for use by members of a medical team in a hospital, clinic, or office. The system receives patient information from doctors, pharmacists, patient monitoring equipment, testing laboratories, and/or computer databases. Access to selected subsets of patient information is provided by user selection of specific data sets identified by job function selection icons. A member of the medical team can record observations about a patient using key words and phrases which can be supplemented with additional text for customized notation. Multiple types of patient data are selectively displayed simultaneously, and to multiple remote users. The system can access stored data according to user-specified formulae to compute a score or metric which reflects a relationship between various factors, each factor being weighted appropriately according to its significance as defined in the formula. A user can selectively display data in graphic form by “clicking” on a row of tabular data in a tabular region of the display and “dragging and dropping” that row to a graphic display region of the display.

A system for providing expert critical care simultaneously to a plurality of geographically dispersed intensive care units (ICU's) from a remote location, the system comprising:a network;a plurality of geographically dispersed ICU's comprisingmeans for monitoring patient data elements from a patient and means for transmitting the monitored patient data elements to a remote command center by the network;the remote command center connected to the network and comprising:one or more display devices;a database, wherein the database comprises stored patient data elements relating to the patient;a computerized patient care management system connected to a workstation, wherein the computerized patient care management system is adapted for:receiving the monitored patient data elements from the plurality of geographically dispersed ICU's;storing the monitored patient data elements in the database;applying a rules engine to at least two patient data elements stored in the database;displaying at least two patient data elements as a series of values over successive periods of time and displaying an indication from an output of the rules engine on the one or more display devices;monitoring the medical condition in the patients and utilizing the output from the rules engine to determine if intervention is warranted; andwherein the monitoring and intervention for individual patients in the plurality of geographically dispersed ICU's occurs 24 hours per day 7 days per week.
