A variable refrigeration system including a cooling system having a compressor, a condenser, and a refrigerant. An active insulation system includes an insulation portion disposed therein that holds a gas. The insulation portion is operably connected to the compressor and includes an insulation panel adjacent a refrigerated compartment.
