Cooling air intake port (52), cooling air exhaust port (55), and securing walls (86, 87), which contact and secure the side surfaces of one or more battery cells (72), may be defined within two battery pack housing halves (50, 80). When battery pack (99) is assembled, at least one cooling air passage (91, 92) is defined by the side surfaces of the battery cells, the interior surface of the battery pack housing, and the securing walls. The cooling air passage connects the cooling air intake port to the cooling air exhaust port. Further, the securing walls isolate or physically separate the cooling air passage from battery terminals (72a, 72b). By forcing cooling air through the cooling air passage, the battery cells can be effectively and efficiently cooled. In addition, if the battery terminals are isolated from the cooling air by the securing walls, the electrical contact areas of the battery cells are protected or shielded against outside moisture and foreign substances that may be introduced into the battery pack by the cooling air.

The battery pack as in claim 1, wherein the battery cells are elongated and the first set of securing walls extends transversely to a longitudinal direction of the elongated battery cells. 5. The battery pack as in claim 4, wherein the second set of securing walls extends transversely to the longitudinal direction of the elongated battery cells. 6. The battery pack as in claim 1, wherein the first and second sets of securing walls isolate the cooling air passage from end faces of the battery cells. 7. The battery pack as in claim 1, wherein the first and second sets of securing walls protect end faces of the battery cells from moisture and foreign substances that enter into the cooling air passage. 8. The battery pack as in claim 1, wherein the housing comprises separate top and bottom halves, and the first and second sets of securing walls are formed on an inner surface of the bottom half of the housing. 9. The battery pack as in claim 1, wherein the battery cells are elongated,the first and second sets of securing walls extend transversely to a longitudinal direction of the elongated battery cells, andthe first and second sets of securing walls isolate the cooling air passage from end faces of the battery cells. 10. The battery pack as in claim 9, wherein the first and second sets of securing walls respectively include at least two securing walls, each securing wall comprising a plurality of indentations that respectively receives the battery cells. 11. The battery pack as in claim 10, wherein the housing comprises separate top and bottom halves, and the first and second sets of securing walls are formed on an inner surface of the bottom half of the housing. 12. The battery pack as in claim 1, wherein the battery cells are elongated,the first and second sets of securing walls extend transversely to a longitudinal direction of the elongated battery cells, andthe first and second sets of securing walls protect end faces of the battery cells from moisture and foreign substances entering into the cooling air passage. 13. The battery pack as in claim 12, wherein the first and second sets of securing walls respectively include at least two securing walls, each securing wall comprising a plurality of indentations that respectively receives the battery cells. 14.
