A monitoring device for vehicles includes a housing, at least one electrochromic mirror glass arranged in the housing so as to have a front side facing an observer, and at least one camera. The at least one electrochromic mirror glass comprises a reflective layer that is reflective in the visible spectral range of light. The at least one camera is arranged behind the reflective layer in a viewing direction viewed from the front side. The at least one camera takes images through the reflective layer. The electrochromic mirror glass has an electrochromic layer and the reflective layer is arranged behind the electrochromic layer in the viewing direction.

The monitoring device according to claim 1, wherein said reflective layer is selected from the group consisting of an interference reflective layer, a chromium reflective layer, a titanium reflective layer, and a titanium-chromium reflective layer. 3. The monitoring device according to claim 1, comprising an auxiliary lighting unit configured to provide additional light for said at least one camera. 4. The monitoring device according to claim 3, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light of a wavelength able to pass through said reflective layer. 5. The monitoring device according to claim 3, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light having a wavelength outside of the visible spectral range of light. 6. The monitoring device according to claim 3, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit comprises light emitting diodes. 7. The monitoring device according to claim 6, wherein said light emitting diodes emit light in the infrared range. 8. The monitoring device according to claim 3, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit is arranged behind said reflective layer in said viewing direction. 9. The monitoring device according to claim 3, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit comprises light emitting diodes arranged in a matrix of rows and columns. 10. The monitoring device according to claim 3, wherein said housing and said mirror glass form an interior rearview mirror, wherein said housing has a rim, and wherein said auxiliary lighting unit comprises light emitting diodes arranged on said rim of said housing. 11. The monitoring device according to claim 10, wherein said rim is comprised of a material that is opaque to the human eye. 12. The monitoring device according to claim 1, comprising an image-transmitting fiber bundle connected to said at least one camera. 13. The monitoring device according to claim 12, wherein said fiber bundle has an optical head resting against a backside of said mirror glass. 14. The monitoring device according to claim 12, wherein said fiber bundle has an optical head and is arranged together with said optical head on said rim. 15. The monitoring device according to claim 1, wherein said at least one camera comprises a low light level intensifier. 16. The monitoring device according to claim 15, wherein said low light level intensifier is arranged behind said mirror glass in said viewing direction. 17. A monitoring device for a vehicle, said monitoring device comprising: an interior rearview mirror assembly mountable to a portion of a vehicle, said rearview mirror assembly comprising a housing and a variable reflectance mirror element;the reflectance level of said mirror element being variable in response to a change in a drive signal applied to said mirror element;said mirror element comprising a reflective layer that is reflective to visible light incident thereon; andat least one imaging sensor arranged behind said mirror element and having a field of view through said mirror element in a generally rearward direction with respect to the vehicle, wherein said at least one imaging sensor captures images through said reflective layer of said mirror element. 18. The monitoring device according to claim 17, wherein said reflective layer comprises a metal layer selected from the group consisting of a chromium reflective layer, a titanium reflective layer, and a titanium-chromium reflective layer. 19. The monitoring device according to claim 17, comprising an auxiliary lighting unit configured to provide additional light for said at least one imaging sensor. 20. The monitoring device according to claim 19, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light of a wavelength able to pass through said reflective layer. 21. The monitoring device according to claim 19, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light having a wavelength outside of the visible spectral range of light. 22. The monitoring device according to claim 19, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit comprises light emitting diodes. 23. The monitoring device according to claim 22, wherein said light emitting diodes emit light in the infrared range. 24. The monitoring device according to claim 19, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit is arranged behind said reflective layer in a viewing direction. 25. A monitoring device for a vehicle, said monitoring device comprising: an interior rearview mirror assembly having a housing and a variable reflectance mirror element, the reflectance level of said mirror element being variable in response to a change in a drive signal applied to said mirror element;said mirror element comprising a reflective layer that is reflective to visible light incident thereon;at least one imaging sensor arranged behind said mirror element and having a field of view through said reflective layer of said mirror element, wherein said at least one imaging sensor captures images of an interior portion of the vehicle; anda logic and control circuit operable to process image data of said imaging sensor, said logic and control circuit being operable to generate an output signal in response to said image data processing. 26. The monitoring device according claim 25, wherein said logic and control circuit is operable to generate an intrusion condition in response to motion being detected at said interior portion of the vehicle. 27. The monitoring device according claim 26, wherein said logic and control circuit is operable to output one or more control signals to vehicle hardware or to a vehicle controller system in response to the detection of motion. 28. The monitoring device according to claim 25, wherein said reflective layer comprises a metal layer selected from the group consisting of a chromium reflective layer, a titanium reflective layer, and a titanium-chromium reflective layer. 29. The monitoring device according to claim 25, comprising an auxiliary lighting unit configured to provide additional light for said at least one imaging sensor. 30. The monitoring device according to claim 29, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light of a wavelength able to pass through said reflective layer. 31. The monitoring device according to claim 29, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light having a wavelength outside of the visible spectral range of light. 32. The monitoring device according to claim 29, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit is arranged behind said reflective layer in a viewing direction. 33. A monitoring device for use in a vehicle, said monitoring device comprising: an interior rearview mirror assembly;said interior rearview mirror assembly comprising a mount for attaching to a windshield or headliner portion of the vehicle;said interior rearview minor assembly comprising an adjustable portion that is generally adjustable with respect to said mount to allow adjustment of the rearward field of view of said interior rearview mirror assembly by a driver of the vehicle;said adjustable portion of said interior rearview mirror assembly comprising a housing;an electrochromic mirror glass arranged in said housing so as to have a front side facing an observer;said electrochromic mirror glass comprising a reflective layer;said reflective layer comprising a metal layer;wherein said electrochromic mirror glass has an electrochromic layer and said reflective layer is arranged behind said electrochromic layer in a viewing direction;an imaging sensor arranged behind said electrochromic mirror glass in said viewing direction viewed from said front side of said electrochromic mirror glass;said reflective layer being sufficiently transmitting for incident light to enable proper operation of said imaging sensor arranged therebehind but also sufficiently reflective to appear mirror-like; andwherein said imaging sensor images through said reflective layer. 34. The monitoring device according to claim 33, wherein said reflective layer comprises a metal layer selected from the group consisting of a chromium reflective layer, a titanium reflective layer, and a titanium-chromium reflective layer. 35. The monitoring device according to claim 33, comprising an auxiliary lighting unit configured to provide additional light for said at least one imaging sensor. 36. The monitoring device according to claim 35, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light of a wavelength able to pass through said reflective layer. 37. The monitoring device according to claim 36, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit is arranged behind said reflective layer in said viewing direction. 38. The monitoring device according to claim 35, wherein said auxiliary lighting unit emits light having a wavelength outside of the visible spectral range of light. 39. The monitoring device according to claim 33, wherein said reflective layer has a thickness less than 100 angstroms. 40. An imaging system for a vehicle, comprising: a control circuit configured to analyze at least one image as a function of a digital filter, wherein the imaging system is configured for use in a vehicle system selected from the group comprising: a headlamp control, an electrochromic mirror control, an information display, a collision avoidance system, an adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning system and a climate control system. 41. An imaging system as in claim 40 wherein said digital filter is a matrix of coefficients to multiply pixels in a region surrounding the current pixel in order to obtain information about the pixel. 42. An imaging system as in claim 40 wherein said digital filter is configured to quantify frequency components of at least one image. 43. An imaging system as in claim 40 comprising at least two vehicle systems configured to share at least one device selected from the group comprising: a power supply, a light sensor and a microcontroller.
