The method of claim 3 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the first number of time slots, and the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises comparing the calculated and recalculated cyclic redundancy check values. 5. The method of claim 3 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the second number of time slots, and the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises performing a modulo-2 addition of the recalculated cyclic redundancy check value with a predetermined value and comparing the result to the calculated cyclic redundancy check value. 6. The method of claim 3 wherein the cyclic redundancy check value and the information is transmitted over the first number of time slots. 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the first number of time slots comprises four time slots and the second number of time slots comprises eight time slots, the time slots each being 1.25 milliseconds. 8. An apparatus, comprising: means for obtaining information for transmission of a data packet;means for transmitting the data packet over at least one time slot from a transmission site;means for calculating an error checking value of a variable from an initial value of the variable and the information, the initial value being an indirect function of a number of time slots of the data packet transmission with the initial value corresponding to the number of time slots without being the number of time slots;means for transmitting the calculated error checking value and the information from the transmission site;means for receiving the calculated error checking value and the information at a receiving site;means for recalculating the calculated error checking value from the received information;means for determining whether the recalculated error checking value matches the calculated error checking value; andmeans for determining the number of time slots of the data packet transmission based on a match between the calculated and recalculated error checking values. 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the error checking value comprises a cyclic redundancy check value. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the initial cyclic redundancy check value comprises a first initial value if the data packet is transmitted over a first number of time slots and a second initial value if the data packet is transmitted over a second number of time slots. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the first number of time slots, and the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises comparing the calculated and recalculated cyclic redundancy check values. 12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the second number of time slots, and the means for the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises means for performing a modulo-2 addition of the recalculated cyclic redundancy check value with a predetermined value and comparing the result to the calculated cyclic redundancy check value. 13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the cyclic redundancy check value and the information is transmitted over the first number of time slots. 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the first number of time slots comprises four time slots and the second number of time slots comprises eight time slots, the time slots each being 1.25 milliseconds. 15. Non-transitory computer-readable media embodying a program of instructions executable by a computer program to perform a method, comprising: obtaining information for transmission of a data packet;transmitting the data packet over at least one time slot from a transmission site;calculating an error checking value of a variable from an initial value of the variable and the information, the initial value being an indirect function of a number of time slots of the data packet transmission with the initial value corresponding to the number of time slots without being the number of time slots;transmitting the calculated error checking value and the information from the transmission site;receiving the calculated error checking value and the information at a receiving site;recalculating the calculated error checking value from the received information;determining whether the recalculated error checking value matches the calculated error checking value; anddetermining the number of time slots of the data packet transmission based on a match between the calculated and recalculated error checking values. 16. The computer-readable media of claim 15 wherein the error checking value comprises a cyclic redundancy check value. 17. The computer-readable media of claim 16 wherein the initial cyclic redundancy check value comprises a first initial value if the data packet is transmitted over a first number of time slots and a second initial value if the data packet is transmitted over a second number of time slots. 18. The computer-readable media of claim 17 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the first number of time slots, and the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises comparing the calculated and recalculated cyclic redundancy check values. 19. The computer-readable media of claim 17 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the second number of time slots, and the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises performing a modulo-2 addition of the recalculated cyclic redundancy check value with a predetermined value and comparing the result to the calculated cyclic redundancy check value. 20. The computer-readable media of claim 17 wherein the cyclic redundancy check value and the information is transmitted over the first number of time slots. 21. The computer-readable media of claim 20 wherein the first number of time slots comprises four time slots and the second number of time slots comprises eight time slots, the time slots each being 1.25 milliseconds. 22. A processor configured to: obtain information for transmission of a data packet;transmit the data packet over at least one time slot from a transmission site;calculate an error checking value of a variable from an initial value of the variable and the information, the initial value being an indirect function of a number of time slots of the data packet transmission with the initial value corresponding to the number of time slots without being the number of time slots;transmit the calculated error checking value and the information from the transmission site;receive the calculated error checking value and the information at a receiving site;recalculate the calculated error checking value from the received information;determine whether the recalculated error checking value matches the calculated error checking value; anddetermine the number of time slots of the data packet transmission based on a match between the calculated and recalculated error checking values. 23. The processor of claim 22 wherein the error checking value comprises a cyclic redundancy check value. 24. The processor of claim 23 wherein the initial cyclic redundancy check value comprises a first initial value if the data packet is transmitted over a first number of time slots and a second initial value if the data packet is transmitted over a second number of time slots. 25. The processor of claim 24 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the first number of time slots, and the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises comparing the calculated and recalculated cyclic redundancy check values. 26. The processor of claim 24 wherein the data packet is transmitted over the second number of time slots, and the determination of the number of time slots of the data packet transmission comprises performing a modulo-2 addition of the recalculated cyclic redundancy check value with a predetermined value and comparing the result to the calculated cyclic redundancy check value. 27. The process of claim 24 wherein the cyclic redundancy check value and the information is transmitted over the first number of time slots. 28. The processor of claim 27 wherein the first number of time slots comprises four time slots and the second number of time slots comprises eight time slots, the time slots each being 1.25 milliseconds. 29. A wireless communication apparatus comprising: means for receiving a data packet, a calculated error checking value of a variable, and information for transmission of the data packet;means for recalculating the calculated error checking value from the received information and an initial value of the variable that is an indirect function of a number of time slots of the data packet with the initial value corresponding to the number of time slots without being the number of time slots; andmeans for determining the number of time slots of the data packet based on a match between the calculated and recalculated error checking values.
