The present invention relates generally to processing audio and video data. One claim recites a method of accessing content stored in a remote database. The method includes: receiving video or audio data; decoding an auxiliary machine-readable code from the video or audio data; deriving a fingerprint, which fingerprint is separate from the machine-readable code, from the video or audio data itself; providing user characteristics or an index to user characteristics; and by using the machine-readable code, fingerprint and user characteristics or information obtained with the index to user characteristics, accessing the content stored in the remote database. Of course, additional combinations and claims are provided as well.

1. A method comprising: receiving video or audio data;decoding, using a processor, an auxiliary machine-readable code from the video or audio data, wherein the auxiliary machine-readable code is steganographically encoded in the video or audio data, and wherein the auxiliary machine-readable code id
1. A method comprising: receiving video or audio data;decoding, using a processor, an auxiliary machine-readable code from the video or audio data, wherein the auxiliary machine-readable code is steganographically encoded in the video or audio data, and wherein the auxiliary machine-readable code identifies a central server;deriving a fingerprint, wherein the fingerprint is separate from the auxiliary machine-readable code, and wherein the fingerprint is derived from data representing features of the video or audio data itself without using embedded data;sending the fingerprint to the central server, wherein the auxiliary machine-readable code identifies the central services; andreceiving data based at least in part on the fingerprint. 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending a globally unique identifier to the central server. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the fingerprint identifies the content within a database. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the data is received from a remote device other than the central server. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the received data is based at least in part on user characteristics. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the user characteristics comprise a profile representing a particular user. 7. The method of claim 5, wherein the user characteristics comprise at least one of user history or user preferences. 8. The method of claim 5, wherein the user characteristics comprise at least access rights. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the fingerprint is derived from data associated with perceptually relevant features of the video or audio. 10. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, if executed by a computing device, causes the computing device to perform operations comprising: receiving video or audio data;decoding collateral data from the video or audio data, wherein the collateral data is steganographically encoded in the video or audio data, and wherein the collateral data identifies a central server;deriving a fingerprint, wherein the fingerprint is separate from the collateral data, and wherein the fingerprint is derived from data representing features of the video or audio data itself without using embedded data;sending the fingerprint to the central server, wherein the collateral data identifies the central server; andreceiving data based at least in part on the fingerprint. 11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10, further comprising sending a globally unique identifier to the central server. 12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein the fingerprint identifies the content within a database. 13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein the data is received from a remote device other than the central server. 14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein the received data is based at least in part on user characteristics. 15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14, wherein the user characteristics comprise a profile representing a particular user. 16. An apparatus comprising: a processor configured to:receive video or audio data;decode collateral data from the video or audio data, wherein the collateral data is steganographically encoded in the video or audio data, and wherein a central server is identified based at least upon the collateral data;derive a fingerprint, wherein the fingerprint is separate from the collateral data, and wherein the fingerprint is derived from data representing features of the video or audio data itself without using embedded data;send the fingerprint to the central server, wherein the central server is identified based at least upon the collateral data; andreceive data based at least in part on the fingerprint. 17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising sending a globally unique identifier to the central server. 18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the fingerprint identifies the content within a database. 19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the data is received from a remote device other than the central server. 20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the received data is based at least in part on user characteristics.
